in reply to: Wolves and Rivers Video #35067
We spent 10 days in Yellowstone last year. We rented a cabin just north of the park and got an earful from the locals about wolves. While walking through the pastures around the cabin, I came across several wolf carcasses. While in the park and out, I saw no shortage of elk. They were everywhere.
It’s tough to balance a wolf’s right to exist with our perceived right to do what we want with the land. Just ask me after the coyote’s catch a few of my chickens 👿
For me the issue boils down to my belief that we don’t have a right to determine what animals get to live, and which don’t. This hubris will be our undoing.
So with that, I always plan on feeding the coyote’s. While a dozen chickens will provide all the eggs we could need, I start out with 20. After 2 years, I know I will have fed the coyote’s most of them, and it is time to get some more. Just the cost of doing business and sharing the world with my neighbors. A tax if you will.
And as far as the benefits to the park that the wolf’s have made. I think it is pretty irrefutable. Good data has been kept. The effect is undeniable. The correlation is irrefutable. Are wolf’s the cause? No other theory has been posited, that I know of anyway.
in reply to: A club for those of us without any back country #35049Very inspirational stuff! Wish I had some good advice, but i don’t.
All I can do is make you feel better by pointing out there are worse places to live. NC for example. Our draconian Governor and his cohorts in the legislature have rolled back clean air and water regulations to the ’50’s. Now they are repealing the fracking ban that has been in place since the ’40’s.
I think the problem here in the east is the super sized and entrenched companies that basically run the show. Duke power for example. But at least the Federal AG is sniffing around after they dumped all that coal ash in the Dan River.
When you have a cradle to grave company like duke (Duke hospital to bring you into the world, Duke cigarettes and Coal fired power plants to make you sick, Duke hospital to see you out of the word) it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our Governor and at least 10 legislators have been duke employee’s all their life. ug.
in reply to: Longbow Build Question #30474It looks like the fades on your riser are a bit steep. Not knowing how long your riser is, I can’t say for sure. But if it was me, I’d want a more gentle slope to the fades.
I make the hand section of my long bow risers about 4 inches, or the width of my hand.
Getting the glass to lay down on the steep fades will take more force than to get it to lay down on a gentler slope.
in reply to: Double DeadHeads #30469I found 2 heads once in the same briar patch.
I’d been following a blood trail I came across. It led into the tangle and I got down and crawled into the mess. Took me an hour to find my way out and never found the deer (guess it was a deer?). But I did come across 2 nice heads and retrieved them. They hang on the barn to this day. Both are the largest racks seen on farm by neighbors and family, dead or alive.
You make arizona seem like a great place! My folks used to get Arizona Highways (I think that’s the name) magazine when I was a kid. I spent untold hours gazing in awe at the pictures and reading the articles.
in reply to: Father and son longbows #30462Very nice!
I made a bow for my daughter, and even though she out grew it a few years back, she still talks about the bow dad made for her.
It’s a good thing. Better get on the stick Jim and get ready to make one for your rug rat. And enjoy every second of it, they grow up and away, way too soon.
in reply to: poll on release #30457I shot split in my compound days for 15 years. When I moved to a longbow I couldn’t shoot well. I switched to 3 under and stayed there for about 8 years. Last year I switched back to split and found the following advantages:
– Puts less stress on my ring finger (reason for trying it again) which alleviated pain from tendon injury.
– Discovered it wears the string / string nock set less than 3 under.
– Discovered it wears my glove less than 3 under.
– Definitely quieter than 3 under
All the best shooter’s I know of – F Bear, H Hill, B Ferguson, etc shoot split.
That said, I think 3 under is more accurate at 20 yds and under for me. But the other advantages motivate me to keep shooting split. Look out Howard!
in reply to: Chain saw in a can #30451I’m sure it works. But if you accept their claim that it will cut a 3 inch branch in 10 seconds, then it is just on par with the good folding saws available these days.
I bought a good folding saw for about 10 dollars and it can be used in a variety of ways that the chain saw cannot, including 1 handed…
The new saw blades are so aggressive on both the push and the draw, that I don’t think they can be beat. The chain may work, but it can only be used one way, and requires that the wood provide it’s own resistance to movement. Looks like a perfect setup for Curly and Moe.
in reply to: Does 10 grains matter? #25210For an average shooter like me, 20 or 30 grains doesn’t make any difference.
but if you want to add 10 grains… You could add a 1 inch aluminum sleeve to your arrows which will improve their durability and give you those 10 grains back.
in reply to: World's best bunny hunting! #25194Well I clicked on the video, and it came up with a message saying it was a private video.
Then I looked at Dave’s 2nd post and tried to figure out if that was him. Couldn’t be unless the guy in the background is a giant.
Must be a private joke.
Too many privates for me. I’m so confused.
in reply to: Bows on the Big Screen #14864That was a good one! Thanks.
that shooting off the head thing… my how times have changed.
Well shucks, it’s easy…
Step 1. Put heavy bow on table.
Step 2. Pick up beer and drink up.
Step 3. Go find 50lb bow and shoot that.
Step 4. Put 50lb bow away so people think you shot the heavy bow.
Well, as you can tell this advice ain’t very useful. But you may wish you had listened to it later…
Good luck. I envy you burly types.
in reply to: Bamboo splitter? #9740I’m no expert, but since no one else has responded…
I’ve split a bunch using just an old machete and a mallet. Put the machete on top of the colm where you want it and begin tapping with the mallet. It’ll split real nice.
in reply to: too much time in the woods? #9733Reminds me of some old saying I just can’t quite remember… Something about standing still long enough the weeds start growing on you.
in reply to: This website should be banned #9732Now I know what cold turkey means… Burrr!
Been helping a friend make a bow last few days. He’s stoked and thinks he’s invented the best bow ever. I give him a week and he’ll be back asking about making a new one cause he’s thought of some improvements…
in reply to: an about time article #9719it’s not just deer, it’s ducks too. I’m sure just about all game species.
While duck hunting this year you could watch the ducks go from one bait pile to the next as they flew over our sorry decoys without even a second glance.
Another reason not mentioned in the article is that deer that are not baited are not as spooky. I am sure they know these piles are not natural and as soon as they start seeing them, they start looking up…
