in reply to: Let's build a St. Charles Quiver #32654
Every work bench needs a little green dinosaur! Very nice quiver. Needs a squirrel tail tied to it.
in reply to: St Charles Style quiver #31532Looks good Duncan. A build along is always welcome IMHO!
What’s the bow? I figured you’d be using that shrew by now…in reply to: Squirrels 4 Duncan 0 #31525Tree chickens?… I think that’s a bit generous. More like tree rats….
But I love chasing them too. I like to put a dozen in the freezer every year for stew. I can only claim 1 or 2 of those dozen are stuck with an arrow…The rest my boy gets with his .22 or his 4-10.Good luck Duncan!in reply to: Getting started on making wooden arrows #30996I am no expert. But making arrows will not require a teacher. You can learn alot just from a 3Rivers catalog… And I am sure there is a book or two that covers it.
The big question people seem to ask is what fletching jig to use… I use a jo jan cause I can do 6 arrows at a time…Best advice I can give you is to just start doing it. Good luck and have fun!in reply to: Eastern (hops) hornbeam #30544I have no personal experience, but have read the bowyers bible series. It is mentioned as a good bow wood several times.
We have american hornbeam around us. Some folks call it iron wood. I’ve been wondering what the difference is between American and Hop hornbeam…in reply to: Longbow build for a friend #30537All those names that got dropped missed me. But sure is a pretty bow!
And congrats on finishing your treatment! That is no small accomplishment.in reply to: Walking Stick from Bow Scraps #28283Duncan wrote:
Steve,
Thats a first class walking stick. I have a vine wrapped hickory with that same compass in it that I made several years ago.
Duncan
Thanks Duncan.I have a hickory stick that my dad made for me. He carved a spirit face into the top. It’s not vine wrapped, but it is snakey. I’ve been using it for about 5 years. I leave it on the front porch (next to the ever increasing stack of debarked poplar saplings my boy brings up from the beaver pond) and this summer, some bugs decided to have it for lunch… It still seems solid, but… I think I will cut the top off with the spirit face, varnish it, and rest it somewhere. It’s surprising how many uses a person finds for a walking stick while out and about…in reply to: Walking Stick from Bow Scraps #28268David Petersen wrote: Gorgeous, Steve! Let me know if you decide to market those. dp
That sounds like work! I tried working for a living, didn’t much care for it. But I’d trade one for a signed copy of a book…But there are a lot nicer and better made walking sticks available. A quick google will prove that.in reply to: Bird Points #27304Right as usual George. Sorry. I went back and watched the “Fins, Feather, and Fur” episode. Right at the beginning of the feathers section is a shot of Fred Nocking an arrow with a broadhead.
in reply to: " Primitive " Bowfishing Video #27178I knew coke was old, didn’t realize it was paleolithic…
in reply to: what to do with feathers in the rain #26112I wouldn’t give 3Rivers too much grief. They will replace the arrows no problem, I am sure.
The super glues that they put feathers on with these days are super sensitive to humidity when applied. I have found that when the conditions are just right, you can put a feather on with super glue, let it dry, give it a tug. And it will be anchored tight. But wait a few days and the feathers will be on the floor…But it is a good lesson. If you get set up with a feather jig and start doing it yourself, you will never have feather problems in the future… expecially if you use a good adhesive like fletch flex. Takes longer than super glue, but will never fail on you…in reply to: OUCH…..my nose!!! #24984It’s happened to me a few times too. I tracked it down to a burr on my nocking point.
I use a brass nockset on top, and a wrapped nock set on the bottom. Either one can cut you. Look for a burr on the brass, and/or swivel the brass around a little bit so the seam is in a different place. Look at the knot on a tied nock set. it is usually the culprit. That said, I quit using tied nock sets cause they always ended up bothering me. Now I just use 2 nice smooth brass nock sets…The band-aid idea really helps in the short term.in reply to: Bird Points #24979All I know about hunting phesant with a bow I learned from the Fred Bear Video on the topic. Looks like they just used field points.
The announcer said that “any hit will bring a bird down”. They also had what looked like a good dog….Sure sounds like fun, whatever you end up using…in reply to: got a 4 point #24975Looks like it was a beautiful morning… Good Job!
I’ve taken 3 does and a buck this season so far, but all in the evening. I was hoping to fix that this morning, but it is raining cats and dogs. So here I sit in my warm cabin sipping coffee and looking at your buck.Thanks. Maybe I’ll go out in a few hours…in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #22712Thanks for the additional pictures. I think there is a dead pig walking, somewhere…
Can’t wait to see those arrows finished up and complete, with blood that is… -
