in reply to: Trad bowhunting education?? #34712
The North Carolina Bowhunters Association has started a program similar to what you are talking about. It’s not strictly traditional (nothings perfect), but it may have some components you can use.
Check out the website, and if you are interested, I can send you copies of the forms we use, which may give you some curriculum ideas, and indemnity statements, etc…

The point is to take someone who is interested in bowhunting through the process to killing a deer, field dressing it, and delivering it to a butcher (or process it themselves).
in reply to: Orion Rising!! #33835I was doing some hammock reading here at the beach, and came across this passage in Leopold’s Almanac: “Orion must have been the original mentor of the too early company, for it is he that signals for too-early rising. It is time when Orion has passed west of the zenith about as far as one should lead a teal.”
in reply to: broadhead target #32399I’ve found the new gorilla tape is a really good strong tape. It might even work better as a backing 😀
I hesitate to mention this (I believe you are a fellow roku enthusiast), as it may ruin a few good hours of your remaining life, but red green is on roku. you can get it on the “nowhereman” channel.
But be careful. RG is like a too sweet wine, best imbibed in very small amounts (1 episode every few days).
in reply to: Anti attack! #32389Looks like it was a beautiful mountain day! I can almost smell the air from here.

I have no need for a broadhead target…
The kids and I do watch Red Green. The first time I saw it, I wondered how such a stupid thing could be on TV. But for some reason we kept watching it. It sort of grows on you, like fungus. When my wife hears the theme song, she goes in the bedroom and slams the door. So we mainly watch it when she’s not home…
Ditto for me on the broadheads. A few shots should tell the story. That’s why my foam block has lasted so many years…
in reply to: Shooting Gloves #30184I’ve got a whole box full of gloves / tabs. I always end up back with the damascus glove. I cut the tip out of the middle finger, which I place against an eyetooth for anchor.
in reply to: Orion Rising!! #30178Part of my ritual when heading out in the morning to hunt is to find Orion in the sky. It is always in the sky early morning during hunting season. It’s like how the call of the crow changes when hunting season comes…
I like that thought: Put your feet on the ground and know where you are in the universe…
in reply to: broadhead target #29041Nice. The handyman’s secret weapon, duct tape!

Don’t be shy now, do tell… 😀
in reply to: Moose & Ticks #29028I killed one in Quebec back in ’06. I didn’t notice it right away, but after a day of hanging, the ticks were crawling off him in sheets. Lots of different species too. Nasty.
I understand that biologists are thinking that the parasite load from ticks is the limiting factor in the moose’s southern range limits.
in reply to: broadhead target #28067I would think that the catalog’s would be so hard that the broadhead might bend when hitting it… Do you crumple them up, or just stack them in there flat? Are you shooting at the edge of the catalog, or the face?
Sounds like a good use, and it continues to support the Post Office, which is a good thing.
in reply to: Neat little story #28059I think it’s because people just can understand why a person would hunt with such equipment. Why put in all that time to go hunting, and then take such an inefficient weapon? The majority of people in this more-for-less consumerism driven country just can’t see it.
I always expect that when I tell people about how I hunt with a home made longbow, and how I actually manage to kill something from time to time, they would be impressed. But the usual reaction seems more along the lines of: “why would a smart guy like you hunt with such a silly old thing?”
Our great hope lies in the fact that, unlike cats, people can truly change. But for a person to change that much requires an epiphany… And to change a culture, that’s a lot of epiphany’s to come by.
in reply to: Four new bows for friends… #26923Very Nice!
I have a friend who is buging me to make him a bow, and I just keep puting it off. But you have motivated me. If you can do four at a time, this time of year, I aught to be able to make at least one.
Thanks for the motivation.
in reply to: From Master #2691839 bucks or some string and strap? That’s nuts.
I have seen this on one of the disks from the Masters of the Barebow series. I didn’t give it much thought. But after seeing this video, I can see how it could help. He didn’t mention that the length has to be adjusted so that when you let go, the string doesn’t travel too far.
To me, it looks like it might be a helpful tool. But 39 bucks. That’s nuts!
in reply to: NON-Snap on nocks for carbons #25832How much the nock snaps on your string mostly has to do with how big your string is. If the fit is tight, it will snap more. That said, you might consider:
– Some nocks have wider throats than others. You could try some different brands to get the fit you want.
– You can sand the narrowest part of the throat of your current nocks to make them fit less tightly.
– You could use a thinner string, or reserve your current string with a thinner serving.
Hope this helps.
