I’ll be seeing about a hidey hole in that draw. 🙂
Something about that sounds real appealing…
in reply to: Deer Farming #37652It’s a done deal in NC.
Our wonderful Legislature took deer management away from the wildlife commission and gave it to the agricultural commission with a single line in the budget.
I don’t see how that’s legal, but they did it. No notification, no comments, no debate in the legislature. It was paid for by Food Lion and the Deer “farmers”. Not sure what the CEO of Food Lion has planned, but I am sure it ain’t good…

in reply to: Working on my inner gadfly.. #37295As bad as it gets in your neck of the woods, you can always count on NC to make you look good.
This year, the legislature took deer management away from the wildlife department and gave it to the agriculture department. That’s so we can have more deer farms here, and less wild deer running around breaking windshields… Yep, insurance company lobbyists working with the CEO of Food Lion to make deer just another cow.
No announcement, no public discussion, no senate debate. Just a line in the budget.
in reply to: A new one to the fold #37288What a thing to share, I hope it sticks! Could make for some interesting pillow talk. Never been there, what an adventure!

… I quit drinking about 7 months ago…
There are many good reasons to quit drinking, so if those apply to you, well then way to go! But if they don’t, there is a lot of evidence that show’s moderate drinking is good for the heart health, and maybe a few other things.
The studies seem to consistently show that moderate drinkers outlive heavy drinkers and non drinkers alike. Middle of the road, is the best place to be I guess 😀
in reply to: Keeping it fun! #33537Listen boys, I want you to lay that pistol down! I mean it, I am not kidding. No really, lay that pistol down now! Pistol down, down pistol… Now I will have that crap in my head all morning…
As for the girl with the bow, well I’ve seen that floating around before. I’ve been trying to come up with some good fatherly advice for my son as he enters his late teens. I wasn’t making any progress advising him about what sort of women might make a good mate. So I showed him the picture and told him if he could find a girl that could do this, to try and keep her 😀
in reply to: New tor Bows #32472Don’t spend a lot of money on your first bow. Try to get something used. If you like longbows, then it would be good to read up a bit too. Byron Furgeson’s book “Become the Arrow” is a good how-to Book. Stick with longbow writers as recurves are a different breed. Horace Ford wrote a good one too back in the 1800’s. And of course, anything written by Howard Hill. These books and more are available from 3 Rivers.
I just got a copy (thanks to Amazon and my wife) of “Hitting them like Howard Hill” by John Schultz for 12 bucks. Only took 3 years of looking to find it at that price 😀
I hope you stick with long bows. There is a lot of spirit in them, and they seem to bring out the good times.
Good luck in your new endeavor. Traditional archery is like no hobby you have ever had.
in reply to: We may be experiencing some turbulence… #31298That’s a tight group! You’d a broke a nock if you had shot at the same dot.
We have a tradition at our house that whoever looses the round gets the next beer. I’m afraid if you lived around here I’d be doing the walking…
in reply to: adding weight to rear o f shaft…affect on spine? #31285Simple answer is yes.
Add weight to front of arrow, arrow gets weaker.
Add weight to rear of arrow, arrow gets stiffer.
It’s easy to understand if you remember that a heavier arrow shoots more slowly. Adding weight to the rear of the arrow makes the bow shoot more slowly, and since the weigh is in the back, the arrow doesn’t have to push against it, which in turn makes the arrow act more stiff.
in reply to: Bright Fletching/Wraps and Hunting #31277I mostly shoot wild turkey feathers, which have white in them. OK, but not ideal. I use a white nock to help out. When shooting a deer or other critter it is very important to see where the arrow hit (to plan followup). For me, visible fletching is key. Hopefully the arrow passes through and is gone in a flash. Bright fletching is usually the only hope of seeing where the arrow hit.

One cool thing about archery which I don’t believe was mentioned is grouse season and I love hunting chickens with my bow
Good point. That’s generally the only meat I bring home anyway…8)
My thinking exactly! I will be in colorado in the middle of september “hunting” elk. I looked at the small game options and it looks like nothing else whatsoever is open at that time. 😥

A local bowyer here, Ben Graham of Humingbird Bows, won the new wood arrow longbow class. Not too many people competed in it though, as I understand.
