I hunt mostly from tree stands. I have used both the screw in hooks, and the gangly arm hooks. If you walk through almost any sneaky place around my house and look up, you are likely to see one of these forgotten accessories rusting in abandonment.

I was forced, through the loss of my extra hooks, to hold my bow. After a while I got comfortable holding it. Now I don’t use hooks anymore.

I have three common postures with the bow.

The first is what I do when standing (which hopefully is most of the time) I rest the lower nock on my boot toe. Then I either hold the bow against my body at the grip, or I lean a bit on the bow by grasping it toward the top nock.

The second two are when I am sitting. I can either lay the bow across my lap, or I stand it between my knees and lean it (the string) against my right shoulder, with the lower nock on my boot toe.

I have found it surprisingly comfortable to just keep my hands on my bow all the time. As a result, when deer do come by, I am always prepared and don’t need to move to grab my bow. And I don’t leave any more metal hooks lost in the trees…

I bought a brick of the CCI’s and have been using them in my Henry the last few years. I concur they are fast and hit hard. Makes a mess of a squirrel if you are not careful. And puts groundhogs down fast.

I am not a long range shooter, so I don’t know what they will do out to 300 yds. But at 75 yds they work great.

My only complaint is that they tend to load poorly with the lever action. I have to be careful not to jam the gun.

          Dave,

I know how you feel about a “perfect shi…” they can be few and far between, but when you have one, a person tends to smile all day!!! 😆

But I wonder, when it comes to wood, if we aren’t trying to make it do too much by coming up with ways to change it’s nature. We make our peace with traditional bows being what they are. We don’t try to make self bows more than they are, we just make em the best we can and go with it.

Maybe wood arrows are the same. We can make them tapered, barrel shaped, laminated, whatever. But trying to make a wood arrow EFOC may just be too much.

If you want EFOC super killer arrows, use carbon. If you are willing to live with the limits of a wood arrow, then use wood in any of it’s myriad shapes and species.

Just keep trying for that perfect shi..i er mean shot!! 😳

2 cents from a guy that uses carbon to hunt cause he knows he can’t be counted on for a perfect shot every time.

            One more thing,…

Deer do seem to have a sixth sense. Especially old does… It’s a shame that we (modern folk) are always looking for the fastest shortcut to make things easy.

Beating the deers senses and making a clean kill is the ultimate challenge and the point of it all (mostly). This product is yet another attempt to reduce that challenge.

It’s like playing basketball with a 5 foot wide hoop. What’s the point?

I believe this sixth sense is a sense. We need to respect it and the deer, and the world we live in. There is not a pill for every ache. And there shouldn’t be.

            OK, I’m done.

I find there is usually a sliver of truth in everything. In this case, it is a small sliver!! Here are my initial reactions, not necessarily in order:
              – It is true that we give off electrical signals, that’s what EKG’s and the like pick up in the hospital.
              – The spectrum specified in the website is not high energy. Just as you can’t shine a flashlight through your hunting cloths, these slightly more energetic waves will not pass.
              – If metal fibers are all that is required to block the radiation, get some $14.00 sliver ion thermals at walmart. (made with silver thread which inhibits body oder bacteria, this works in my opinion)
              – Hunters (like me) are suckers for new stuff. But I hope that we have now found the sucker limit. Otherwise, we are all doomed!!! 😯 🙄 😳

My skin crawls with the stupidity of it.

Grains per Inch – describes the weight of an arrow to its length. For example to find the GPI of a 30 inch arrow shaft that weights 300 grains you would divide 300 by 30 to arrive at 10 grains per inch.

Grains per Pound – describes the weight of an arrow to the draw weight of the bow used to shoot it. Most bow manufacturers will specify a minimum GPP arrow that can be used without violating their warranty limits. So If a manufacturer said you must shoot at least 8 grains per pound for them to honor the warranty, then you would multiply 8 by the weight of your bow. So if you had a 50lb bow, you would multiply 50 times 8 to arrive at 400 grains. This would be the minimum arrow weight you can shoot to maintain warranty. You can always go higher…

                Hope this helps.

I am not sure, but I think maybe you are confusing grains per inch of arrow weight with grains per pound of bow weight.

When you are talking about “MFX Classics are 12” that’s grains per inch of arrow weight. What I was referring to is grains per pound of bow weight. In general, you should shoot no less than 10 grains per pound of bow weight for a hunting setup. Thus with your 55 lb bow, you should try to have at least a 550 grain arrow.

This is not written in stone, just a commonly held standard.

Tungsten welding rods might work. Call a welding shop to get dimensions / cost

I hate to dampen all this barrel stroken… but getting people jazzed up about the possibility of losing their guns is a slick political trick to keep people from thinking about the real pressing problems of the day.

I own my share of guns and am not the least bit worried that they will be taken away.

What I am worried about is:

                      -Industrial Farming is poisoning the land and killing us;
                      -Corporate Greed combined with government lobbying is driving this country to financial ruin;
-The atmosphere is being ruined by pollution.

These and many other problems are the real problems. But Listen, this forum is supposed to be about hunting and archery and other great things 😆 . Not the worries of modern life. I won’t argue these points further. I just wanted to add my perspective to the priority of problems we face.

Weight Tubes – I have not used weight tubes myself, but I would expect that they don’t affect spine or FOC too much (assuming they are installed full length inside arrow). Thus they add weight and increase penetration.

Brass Inserts – Stronger than aluminum ones that came with arrows and moves the center of gravity toward the front of the arrow.

Arrow Weight – Try to shoot at least 10 grains/pound on your bow. Thus, if you have a 50 pound bow, shoot at least 500 grain arrows. You will find your bow shoots more quietly with less vibration. My current setup uses a 14.5 grain per pound arrow. Thus I am shooting 800 grain arrow out of a 55 lb bow. Maybe a bit extreme. But that’s how it worked out with the abowyer broadhead, steel broadhead insert, and brass arrow insert. I still get about 160 fps.

All this said, if you use brass inserts and increase arrow weight, you may need to trim your arrow shafts to get good bare shaft flight. If you use tubes, probably a good idea to bare shaft tune just in case…

Maybe mess with your old arrows to see what happens. Then if you need more spine, you can return your Christmas arrows and get higher spined ones…

BTW – Thanks for taking my post about question marks so well… You are a big man 🙂

I’m a firm believer in low stands. Never above 15 feet.

I use the biggest aluminum stands I can get. I have 3 Gorilla Silverback Magnum stands (they quit selling them last year I guess. New Silverback Magnums don’t look like mine).

I use rapid rails (aluminum version). I have used them on all kinds of crooked trees. I like them so much, I sold all my screw in steps.

I use a linemans harness when I put the stand up. With this setup I can put a stand up in about 5 minutes in September without breaking a sweat. In NC that is saying something.

I have tried the 5 point hitch vests, but I stick with the 5 point free harness that came with my stands. Less bulky.

Whatever you get, I recommend you get aluminum. It doesn’t rust, and it isn’t as heavy. It costs more, but in 10 years you will be glad you got aluminum.

Ahhh, you poets and word smiths make me nostalgic for this season that is not yet a memory, still a week to go…

But the good news is that I am old enough now that next year will pass almost without my knowing it. And again it will be time to take up the chase. Did I say good news? hmmmmm, maybe this year I can hide my own easter eggs.

I am just warming up from my evening in the woods. The last few nights have been the best of the year. Cold air, snow, quiet still wood. Tonight I saw a doe and 2 yearlings, a big old hawk that has flown over the same time last 3 days, a blue heron walking along the beaver pond, a gobbler in the tree, and my friends the squirrels.

The cold is falling off me to the floor. The cat is moving away from me and closer to the fire. Soon we will tuck the kids in and my wife will bring me an eggnog. We will sit in the dark and watch the christmas tree.

That’s the best I can do for a hunting story this year.

Greattreearcher – I know you are a fine young man, and a good shot (I watched your 300 yd ballon pop). It makes me proud that young folks like you are taking up the sports of traditional archery, fishing, trapping. And going to college good job! But listen. Stop with the question marks! Show conviction in what you say. Not everything is a question. Instead say “I will drop him an email.”

I’m sorry to call you out on this. But I have been spending time with the younger members of my family and there seems to be a phonetic style getting popular that requires every sentence to end in a questioning tone. It’s driving me crazy. Like : Fire? Everybody get out? Call 911?

                                Merry Christmas?
