in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #21481
I grew up about an hour from Charlottesville myself. Now that is some pretty country! You are right Duncan, not a fan. But no worries, I am not a fan of the other guys either… Don’t follow ball sports.
One more question on the cane… I have a friend here that is growing some sort of Japanese arrow cane. Supposed to be the good stuff. What is the cane you are using? The pictures look like there are no dimples or divits around the nodes. Could your cane be that perfect, or are they turned to their good side for the picture?Duncan – don’t forget about the NCBA rabbit hunt in January… Info in your copy of the mag.in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #20673I guess those arrows are like a pretty girl in an ugly dress. No reason not to dance is it?
I guess I haven’t seen “pro” cain arrows. All the ones I’ve seen, the nodes were still proud. How hard is it to get them spined to shoot? Do you do it by diameter? Or just feel?Ever put a wood footing on them?in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #20477I noticed the nodes seem almost invisible… Did you take them down, or is it the natural look?
But I have to say, I just can’t warm up to that color blue…in reply to: Plaid Shirts #20461This thread contains a long list of options, some I heard of, some I ain’t! But in all these options, there is one missing…
Make your own shirt, or if that isn’t an option, convince the wife to do it…I bought a pendalton shirt last year in 3X because I normally wear 2X. Well before the winter was over the shirt was handed down to my 11 year old boy. and it barely fit him. What a joke.Shirt patterns and wool are cloth are available at much reduced costs. And making the shirt isn’t that a big a deal for someone in the know.Trick is to wash the wool half a dozen times before you make the shirt so that it is good an preshrunk. The good thing for the seamstress is that he/she now has your presents figured out for the rest of your life!In my case, I have all the wool socks, sweaters, and shirts I can use… and a new beauty of a shirt coming this xmas…I always know what I’m getting because of the pre-present-giving-fittings and pin stickings…in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #19391i guess the thicker steel plate is harder than the spoons were… All that work and I think I would be a little scared to shoot one. I’d probably leave them laying on the mantle.
But I bet they will do the job. They don’t look like they took the blueing too well… But that’s a good idea.in reply to: Upgrades on the Site #16022Seems like there are a few small bugs…
When I log in, I see posts that have changed have a mark next to them (as before). In the old version that mark stayed until I logged out. Now it is gone as soon as I open the thread. It may be my imagination, but it seems like all the marks disappear after I look at just 1 thread. So if there were 3 threads with new comments since my last log in, after I look at one, all 3 marks are gone…Also, I used to get my misspelled words underlined as I went. Now there is no indication of misspelling. If I don’t remember to click on the spelling button, it could be bad…in reply to: Upgrades on the Site #13799Congrats on the wee one! Is that a first?
in reply to: Nock-right arrow flight? #11484When in doubt, go back to bare shaft tuning. Something has changed…
Brace height?
String nock slip?
anchor point change?Who knows what it will turn out to be… But it sure sounds like stiff arrows.
in reply to: point glues? #9302I have found that oil messes up the bond too. Broadheads are usually coated in machining oil when purchased. This oil needs to be removed before glueing…
in reply to: Great Plains vs Predator #8059You might give each company a call and ask them to chrono their bows with your particular arrow weight at your draw length and draw weight.
My guess is they would either have the info already, or be willing to get the data for you.
That looks pretty slick!
3Rivers has a how-to video on their website that I got a lot from. I have been using a punch to make the holes for the lacing, but I think the next time I do it I am going to use a small nail to punch the holes. That way the hole will be no bigger than the lacing.
I got a deer hide from someplace out west for about 30 bucks including shipping. I can make a lifetime worth of grips from that. I alum tanned some hides and was using that for a while, but it isn’t waterproof. So I learned a lesson there…
in reply to: Hammering Trade Points from Spoons #63481That is very cool. Just need to see how the blood drips off it now.
in reply to: LocTite Bheads #63478Heat should loosen the loc-tite so you can unscrew the head from the arrow.
Like Dave said, the heads don’t come loose too often. But if you want some assurance, there is a removable version of loc-tite that won’t cause you these problems.
I think it is blue. And the permanent version is red.
in reply to: Hammering Trade Points from Spoons #62901Very Nice. I’d like to see some close ups of the finished work now…
Do you do anything to harden up the steel? Or do you find stainless spoons?
in reply to: How to deal with mosquitoes? #61905I have a thermocell and have used it in canada for spring bear hunting. It definitely works. But I’d be scared to use it day in and day out. I figure it must be no good to breath. Sitting there breathing that chemical soup hour after hour has got to be bad in the long run.
