in reply to: Oldest Regular Equipment #31420
ditto dave – sweater 70’s wool pants 70’s – my pack Idaho still my fave but that’s from the 90’s – bows from the 60’s up. Friends would make fun and say your right out of the 70’s because I wouldn’t buy camo – go figure . Now there is a new generation that laughs and says your going to show up with a flannel shirt and wool pants.
in reply to: help bow strings #18811I put the string on the bow and I have a brace height say 6″ so I twist the string and try to get to 7 1/4 and I fight getting it strung up . I get these bows from the schools and try to start them at what I would think is a good brace height? I am not a recurve guy so maybe I am struggling with just stringing the bow ? I will ck out Thunderhorn ( he is just over the hill from me )
in reply to: Wood Burning Question #11057back east people burn different fuels because it is available . In the west all I have is pine so we use it. We burn hot fires in the morning and evening and I try to clean the chimney once a month getting all bends and elbows. One good thing about a chimney fire is you have the cleanest chimney in town.
in reply to: Leave Strung in Woods? #54224I treat my bow like a fine woman and would never leave her alone . I do leave her strung up when camping except my self bow .
in reply to: Looking to plan a Dream Elk Hunt #405695 days is not a lot of time to hunt elk. I think you should choice what state you are interested in and then try and hook up with someone in the state and try to work a hunt like that. Drive time could take up most of your time and then you really don’t no what to expect. This year for me was hard one weekend I was in elk and the next nothing. I would choice my state contact fish and game and get input of game harvested and areas to hunt – study the maps get into shape and start covering ground. You should also see what else is available to hunt while your there from small game up depending on your wallet. Buy the best gear you can afford from boots up and be ready for everything from heat to snow.
in reply to: Patience furthers #31662I would be interested in what you decide on your woodies. I am also a wood guy don’t much care for carbons. I have shot birch and like the weight and the 5/16 diameter ???? Fan of the hard woods.
in reply to: Patience furthers #30154real nice. That elk season must be long , we are out Sept 30. Congrats.
in reply to: Base Layers #28953silk is good base then go to wool as said and layer as needed. I’m not a tree stander but have done it here and I use lots of wool. It seems like a lot of money but buy pieces as you go.
in reply to: Arrows for a new old recurve #22323thanks I’m all over that. Yes I will shoot what makes me happy I just had to see what all the hoop la was all about and I just don’t get it . Woodies seem to be cheaper easier and just better. Thanks to all have a great season
in reply to: Arrows for a new old recurve #19101I agree . Luv the woodies but this year was a test year for me so all I read about graphites I decided I should try them. going back to the wing I agree you could call 3rivers and buy laminated birch with a 125 grn head and be good
in reply to: Arrows for a new old recurve #18991I think that’s what I have in my mind . I do have a couple heavy heads . How do I add more weight at the tip ? Can I do this without removing the inserts? Thanks for the help
in reply to: Arrows for a new old recurve #18774George I need help bad . I shoot a Selway lil magnum 54# @ 25″ and I draw 25″. I am shooting Gold Tip 3555 with weight tubes in the shafts with a Simmons tree shark 125 head and they seem to fly well . I just recently finished my hunting season with this set up and with a kill but did not achieve a pass thru ??? Last night I put a 200 grn head on and then a 145 and seem to get good flight . The hunting set up ended up at 550 grns and with the other heads I am hitting the 600 and over mark which is what I think I want. Does this seem like I am doing this right ?? I am just trying to be the best I can be ??
in reply to: Backpacks for hauling meat… #18754I have a badlands 2200 and just recently was fortunate to try it. I skinned and disassembled the elk and put the back straps with the rear quarters and the front quarters together. I was able to make it out in 3 trips and the pack performed nicely. This is not my favorite pack. The things I dislike are that they have cheap zipper pulls that break off and too many foo foo compartments that don’t seem to have a function and you have to take the pack off to use them. The thing I do like was that it was real comfy with a heavy load and over time I would hope that they would make some changes and they could make this pack a great pack.
in reply to: How's your elk season going, Mr. Petersen? #58539good luck. The only bulls I bugle are the ones I am standing in their bedroom and then they light up but all in all pretty quiet . It has been hot dry and extremely smokey here. Can’t wait for a good flick.
in reply to: Congratulations Dave Petersen! #57192congrats Dave. Nobody in their right mind has a presentation in the middle of elk season. Again congrats and have a great hunt
