in reply to: Vintage pics…cool site #19767
Did you read that thing about Betty Davis? I can never tell when people are kidding…
in reply to: Binoc recommendation #14218Well I just have a Nikon Monarch 8X42. I think they’re great. They cost about 300 bucks I think. They are definitely the best “cheap” binoculars I have used, hands down.
That said, when I was in Hawaii hunting this past January, I was glassing down the side of the volcano and didn’t see anything. My buddy said : “look at them pigs!” He had a swarovski (sp) binoculars. When I looked through his, I could see the pigs too.
The other day I looked through some 10 power swarovski’s and they were very impressive. Light too.
in reply to: Hi Everyone #14207Glad to hear you beat the cancer. Good luck in the woods this year, and thanks for checking in!
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #14200Nothing beats a good pot of squirrel stew!
I’ve seen them skinning video’s and can’t say it looks all that reliable.
I just split the skin on their back, slip my fingers in and get a good grip and pull the skin for and aft. When I get it to the head, I cut the head and front feet off. To the tail, I cut that and the back feet off.
Rarely do I get hair on the meat.

Not any of the states you mentioned and I dont have a lot of details for you, but considering what your after, milder winters, lower COL, ya might want to look into North Carolina. Just a thought. Good luck!

I would nix NC. We have one of the highest state tax rates and highest sales tax rates in the nation. Not to mention that the Wildlife Commission is in the pocket of the Insurance Lobby and wants every deer dead.
The mountains are great, but no deer.
Head west young man. Head west.
in reply to: Stumpin/Killin in the South #62525Handling criticism well, as you did, is a sign of a strong mind. Good Man.
in reply to: knock fitting to string #61437Thanks for the tips. I serve strings after they are on the bow, so that’s all the tension I can give ’em. It aught to be enough as the string will never see more tension than that.
And I quit using serving tools because I found I could serve it tighter by just wrapping by hand. It is a pain, but it gives a better wrap in the end.
But I’ve had the problem even before I gave up the serving tool. And I am sure it is the serving actually wearing and here’s why: If I nock the arrow 90 degrees to how you normally nock the arrow (meaning sideways), it clicks on like you would expect it to. That tells me the serving hasn’t warn on the front and back, just the sides.
I used to buy strings, and they did it too… I figured everyone had this problem.
in reply to: how to hunt big diameter trees #61410IMHO, hanging a stand in a tree you can’t wrap your arms around is a dangerous affair. I just find a different tree.

At the risk of stating the obvious… aim lower 😆

in reply to: goose'n the longbow #59632Looks really fun!!!! Love the bow rack set up!!!
We had a roast goose last night. Reminded me why I don’t kill many of them.
Anybody have sure fire way of cooking goose?
in reply to: Stumpin/Killin in the South #59627Doesn’t look venomous to me. I hope you ate it!
in reply to: knock fitting to string #59625I usually have the opposite problem.
After shooting the bow a bunch, the serving wears down so that the nock won’t stay on the string. Then I have to break out the dental floss and build the serving back up…
in reply to: Best wishes for the TBM family #59623I figured somebody would start this thread after the tip-o-the-week came out… Thanks Mike.
I’ve not had the pleasure of meeting anyone associated with the magazine, but it does contributes to my life. So I feel I kind of know the folks that work so hard on it.
Most of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another. And so I send my sincere good vibes to Larry and his family. I’ll be thinking about you. Just keep moving, even when you don’t want to!
in reply to: Adding weight just before kickoff #57898I second What SH said…
Weight tubes will make the arrow fly stiffer. Weight added at the point will make arrows fly weaker, but it will increase your FOC.
What the catalog’s mean is that if you put the arrow on a spine checker after adding the weight tubes, it will read the same. Which is true. But the arrow will be heavier and thus will fly stiffer out of the same weight bow.
But I would consider speed too. If you have arrows around 600 grains or more, that’s already plenty for anything on the east coast. Slowing them down may let that deer sneak out of the way when you shoot…
