in reply to: Let's See Your Fletching #25875
I’ve seen those pictures before somewhere… But looking at them again I notice something on the bows in the first two pictures.
If you look at the lower limbs of the bows, there is something wrapped around the limb which looks like what we would do for a grip.
I wonder what it is?
in reply to: TIP OF THE WEEK #24781Are you talking about the adhesive used to affix the tiles to the floor? I think it’s called mastic.
in reply to: Arrows for my Pa #22430Very nice, indeed!
in reply to: Things That Might Bite #20257We’ve been having these crazy electical storms for the last 2 weeks. Lots of lightening, no rain. Not much anyway. So the other day I was out for a walk and the storm clouds moved in…
I decided that maybe I ought to call the house and get the wife to come pick me up instead of trying to make it back. Tried to call on the cell and there was so much static in the air, the phone wouldn’t work.
My doughter was out on her bike coming back from feeding the animals at the neighbors (they were gone to the beach) when she turned the corner home and saw the house on fire 😯
So she ran in, got mom, and they came out and drove down the road to get me. That part worked out well…
Anyway, got home, got the buckets, and started pouring water on the house. Got the fire out. Pulled siding off to drench fire in wall. Got that done.
Fire Department finally showed up. It looked to me like what happened was that lightening had hit the gas line coming in the house and blew a hole in it and light it on fire. I had turned the gas off as part of my fire extinguishing efforts.
The firemen and I were standing around talking about it. One of them said “Na, couldn’t happen” Just then lightening hit the line again and made a big flash/boom right there in front of us. No fire as the gas was turned off. Lots of raised eye brows though…
Anyway, new insulation and siding back up. Waiting on gas company to come redo gas line from tank to house.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #19342I have that book I think. ain’t read it yet though.
in reply to: Question: wipe on poly #19146You better not get too rusty with the fletching skills there dad, just when them boys get real helpful, they tend move out.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #19143Hay R2, what book is that page from?
in reply to: Question: wipe on poly #18040woops. For some reason I read nock instead of feather in the question.
I second the tape method. Used to use fletch tite and a jojan fletcher. Switched to tape and a bitzenburger and it works almost as well.
I’ve had a few feathers lift up in the middle. And my current batch of tape is hard to work with as the peel off backing breaks up more than it peels off.
But on the whole, its faster and easier. Easier to re-fletch an arrow too.
in reply to: Question: wipe on poly #16946I’ve used:
super glue – Works, but eventually fails. Nock comes off after a while.
Fletch-tite – works ok, but weakens the nock tangs and causes them to fail when shooting.
Barge Cement – Doesn’t work at all.
Duco – seems to work the best. Butseems to react with the finish and changes its color.
in reply to: Douglas Fir FluFlus #16941will do!
in reply to: Douglas Fir FluFlus #15839I did the wipe on thing for the first couple dozen arrows. Then I sprang for the $13 dollar dip tube and a can of their dipping juice. Forgot the name of it… Works really well, and way easier even than wipe on.
Gonna start turning out some more arrows in the next couple weeks. Hopefully these will be huntin-good.
I like the douglas fir. Cut up a few boards, and now I have a lifetime supply. But I want to try some birch. Art and Saxton said Birch was Best.
If you look at Art’s shooting scores recorded in Saxton’s book, I’d have to say they at least didn’t get in the way.
Nice Arrows Jim! If you end up bumping one into something, post a picture…
in reply to: Traveling Case #15831Maple can make a really good bow. I’d go with that.
Use the birch for arrows 😀
Rawhide is good for protecting the back of the bow, but it robs cast from it. Silk or Sinew add cast.
Or just a piece of cloth to protect the back.
Or just leave it alone.
I don’t have much experience with self bows. But I did read Paul Comstock’s book on making white wood bows. And volume I of the Bowyers Bible. Between the two, Comstocks is probably the best source for getten-er-done.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #14702Ralph – Those stomping grounds DO look good. Have fun and take a deep breath on top of that hill for me!
Jim – From the looks of those leaves around your bow, fall is well underway. Enjoy the best time of year!
in reply to: Going Cuckoo #14699Here’s another one that is a stumper…

I had the cuckoo and the dove confused for most of my life. Sometime before my 10th birthday, an old farmer told me it was a rain crow, when in fact it was the dove.
in reply to: Happy belated fathers day #14689Congrats on the wee little one!
The first of my two will be moving into the dorm on Aug 15th. Seems like only yesterday I was catching him as he saw his first light of day. I remember it like it was yesterday, anyway.
When in doubt, give ’em lots of hugs.
