That’s because the size of the nock set used should be relative to the size of the arrow nock. And generally speaking, most arrow nocks today will fit a sting built to the diameter of a black nock set…

      – If a small nock set is needed to fit the string correctly, then the arrow will fall off the string easily.

      – If a large nock set is needed to fit the string correctly, then the arrow will fit too tightly on the string.

I have found that the black nock set is the correct size for carbon arrow nocks. So if it won’t fit the string correctly, no need even trying an arrow.

Which is yet another example of a good life lesson learned from traditional archery – medium is good.

If you find the tied on nocks to be less reliable than you had expected, you might give the brass nock sets a try again. I suspect your troubles are due to your nock pliers, not the nocks themselves.

There are good pliers and bad pliers. I had a real nice set a few years back but lost it in a move. I went through a few since then and spent a few years trying the tied-on nocks too. I have found another half decent pliers sold by Carbon Express. And overall, I find the brass nocks are less trouble and more easily adjustable…

Sounds to me like you have things well in hand. The only advice I can give you is keep shooting!

I too started out on the left wing path because I figured if so many people were doing it, it must be right…

But here’s something cheap, easy, reversible, and reliable to keep the old points in tight – Use teflon tape on the treads. The cheap plumbers white teflon tape is what I’m talking about. Works great.

I was thinking of getting rid of my LH jigs to solve the loose point problem. So I got some RH pre-fletched arrows and shot them. The points got loose on them just as much as the LH arrows.

A picture is worthwhile here. Check out this link:

The nocks are friction fit. So no adhesives necessary. That way you can easily replace them, or turn them to get good fletching clearance

On the bright side, at least it sounds like the wildlife dept is giving these guys some trouble….

Maybe you could send Ms. HENNESSY-FISKE a copy of Mr. Leopold’s book and a cliff note summary of why she should write articles questioning the very existence of these operations…

When I think back to the folks that I went to college with that majored in mass-com, it’s no wonder these things get written.

I expect nothing speaks louder than money though. Can you imagine giving a hundred thousand dollars to some guy to shoot a pen raised cow eyed buck that can barely lift his head, just to have the deformed antlers? It does make me feel like a stranger in a strange land.

Dave – I tried the link, but I guess you have to be a member and I just try to avoid being a member of anything these days…

What’s the name of video, and maybe I can find it on Roku…

I had my famous movie moment too. It lasted for exactly 0.02 seconds during the filming of Apollo 13. They were filming a scene and caught me walking through the firing room. But alas, I think it ended up on the editing room floor…

Since you are planning to cut the arrows shorter, heating them won’t matter ’cause you are planning to remove the heated part anyway…

Screw in a field point. Heat the field point till you can remove the insert by pulling on the field point with a pliers.

Clean up the insert. Score the inside of the shaft. Use Epoxy or Super Glue to install the insert back into the arrow.

Do not use Hot Glue to install the point.

If it was me, I’d shoot the longer shafts and see how they do before going to the trouble of cutting them down…

Adding weight behind the insert will increase FOC, but not nearly as efficiently as adding weight in front of the insert, i.e. broad head / field point weight…

I would suggest you experiment with heavier points. Point weight is easy to adjust and play with. Adding weight to the back of the insert is a lot more troublesome to work with.

Dave, you are so levelheaded. I guess that’s why you get to be the Grey-Beard 😀 After reading my post again, it did sound uppity. Sorry Folks.

I rarely go to the movies, but through a series of paradoxical events, we ended up going to the new Sherlock Holms flick. And I was really disturbed by several of the trailers we saw before the movie started. I guess that’s what got me going…

This movie reminds me of Leopold’s discussion of Ulysses treatment of his slaves upon returning from his Journey.

I saw a trailer for the movie. It looks to me like another Jaws movie only this time the wolf gets to be the bad guy. Just what we need, another movie demonizing nature.

                              YUUUUCKKKKKK!!!!

I read the review you posted. It’s amazing to me how such a gratuitous boogieman movie can be portrayed as something meaningful.

Oh, I would love to make some analogies here to illustrate the moral depravity of this “movie”. But I know the tread would get deleted then 😳

do a google search for “big jim’s archery” in alabama. He sells a kit to make a 2 piece grip using carbon and fiberglass wrap. he also has a series of 8 or 9 how-to videos showing the process.

Duncan, no worries, you didn’t miss anything. I have to go out this morning and clean the mud out of my boots… But I may have to go for a few more bunny walks now.
