When did the problem start? After a year of shooting? Less? More? Could it be an older string? A newer string? Have you changed the nock point?
Lots of things to look at before any type of diagnosis can be made.
in reply to: ''The Hammer '' small game blunt #21101Today I had the experience Downing had. 2 out 3 ferrules shattered while stumping. Bamboo shafts are fine, VPA heads did fine on same stump as did the Hex. Bummer.
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #20141Are those custom scales on the izula? I really like that knife
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #20085I use this knife for everything. Dressing deer and flipping pancakes, splitting firewood and carving fire kits. With some practice, big knives can do it all.
Blade length 5.5″
Blade width 2″
Handle length 5″
O1 steel
in reply to: from the home page #18634Ive got about 2 gallons of rendered bear fat. Its on most of my broadheads and carbon knives.

Noun
The activity of hunting wild animals or game, esp. for food or sport.
Im not a fan of gov’t regulations, but thats what gov’ts do. Im not a fan of canned ‘hunts’ either. If the animal is penned, its no longer wild. Its the first step towards domestication, so calling it hunting is a misnomer that affects legit hunters.
Still, if a segment of the population cant regulate themselves, the gov’t and other organizations will.
the “When will it stop?” question seems to be a fear that comes from the inability to take charge of our own group.
If we stepped up as a group and condemned canned hunts as we know we should have we would be in a much different position. Now we’ve just shown the nonhunters that we cant manage ourselves so someone else will.
in reply to: Game points for FOC arrows #17353The vpa thumpers are AWESOME. Very nice points
I think it’s imperative to practice moving silently. Too often we wait til a few weeks before the season. Smithhammer mentioned foxwalking which is a great technique. Get a few kids together if you can and make a game out of it. One kid sits with a blindfold on and a tennis ball on the ground next to him. Everyone else is standing in a circle about 30 or 40 feet across. One at a time the kids in the circle move as quietly as possible to try to get the ball. The blindfolded kid points in the direction of sounds he might hear. If he points at the stalker, the stalker is out. It’s a great way to learn how to move silently. Mix up the terrain to make it interesting.
Practice practice practice and if you forget the wind you can forget filling a tag.
I use a ghillie also. Here in CA it’s damn hot so I just use the jacket and boonie. I’ve been using a shemagh with good results when callin in coyotes.
in reply to: Anyone eat coyote? #10730Thanks for the birthday wishes! Even though the coyote meal was a fail it turned out to be a good effort. My buddy came over for a bday bbq and gave me a whole backstrap off an elk he shot last season. best gift of the year!
And thanks for the heads up on cooking carnivores medium rare. I learned my lesson, was burping up coyote howls all day.
Thanks a lot all
in reply to: Anyone eat coyote? #8347I cooked up a blackstrap this morning. It’s my 35th bday and the girlfriend let me cook it inside with some duck eggs. It wasn’t horrible, cooked med rare in bear fat with salt pepper and a fig spread, but I couldn’t finish it. Stringy and sour.
I’ve had mountain lion, didn’t like it, bobcat, didn’t like it, dog in Tibet, didn’t know it, bear, sometimes like it, and all sorts of stuff in Africa. Maybe I just don’t like carnivores. Could be the relationship aspect to the animal though. I hold coyotes in a high esteem, pretty resilient and intelligent creatures. So maybe that’s a part of it.
I didn’t get a deer last season and I ate all the freebies that my buddies gave me.
Anyways, no more coyote hunting for me
in reply to: Anyone eat coyote? #63104While I was at the gym my girlfriend threw out the braising coyote. When I got home the house smelled bad. Like sour game. I’m allowed to give it one more shot but I have to cook it outside.
We’ve got 8 or 9 incense sticks burning right now.
in reply to: Anyone eat coyote? #62956I just pulled it out of the freezer. It’s just a frozen block of meat right now. I pulled off a ham shank and its thawing in a ziplock bag in the sink.
I’m figuring a braise will be the way to go. My girlfriend thinks I’m crazy and my dog is giving me a wide berth.
in reply to: ''The Hammer '' small game blunt #62803I really like these in the 200gr. Im no longer a fan of judos. Its rocky where I hunt so tons of busted spring arms and the fact that I like a 200gr head.
The hammer is awesome.

in reply to: Bows for kids… #52746I like longbows for the kids bows. Not to say recurves are out, its just that making a few longbows is way easier than making recurves.
If you can find out the species of the maple you can then get the specific gravity of that species of maple. Anything over .45 is considered decent for a bow.
I would still be cautious with knots regardless of weight. Knots dont like to bend and maple, though reliable, is not as resilient as some other woods.
You dont need to chase a ring with maple. Just remove the bark and the white wood(sapwood) underneath is the back.
That size branch should yield two bows as long it is not too twisty. Cutting a shelf in the handle is fine as long there is absolutely no bend in the handle. A lot people glue a shelf on. This works fine and doesnt leave you worrying about a possible break.
As for stains and seals….. Minwax wood stains work fine and maple takes a stain well enough. You could go all primitive and make your own stain. That one is fun with the kids.
For sealing it, some of the spray varnishes work well; Deft, Krylon Spray Poly. I tend to use spar varnish, Formbys tung oil, Tru oil or a homemade mix of beeswax and turpentine. Lard works well also.
Tons of opportunities.
Here is a pic of a recent bow I made. Not a kids bow but I just love showing them!
Making bows sees to more addicting than shooting them!
Ill be making some more up in early Jan, a little build along would be fun!
