Stone Glacier started out as a company who made ultralight backpacks, but has grown exponentially, and now offers high quality hunting apparel as well. I was fortunate enough to score both the De Havilland jacket and pant, shortly after visiting the Stone Glacier booth while attending the Western Hunting Expo, back in March. At the time, I was full-swing into snowshoe and shed hunting mode, so they were put to immediate use. Since we are giving away a De Havilland jacket as part of our Subscriber Appreciation giveaway; we’ll focus on the jacket for now.
Keeping this short and sweet before moving on to the product details, I’ll just say that I really love this jacket. The weather can shift several times a day where I live in the North Idaho panhandle, so having a jacket on hand comes with the territory, and I’ve had the De Havilland on deck since late March. The fit of the jacket is superb, but I did have to go up one size given the trim “athletic” cut. The 4-way stretch certainly allows for a broader range of comfort, but if you are on the stocky side, like me, it’s something to keep in mind. The team at SG extended the tail of the jacket to ensure full coverage. This is something that I absolutely appreciate. There’s nothing worse than having a jacket ride up above the waist belt of your backpack, exposing your backside to the elements. The pockets are all situated in just the right places, which once again, is an important detail when wearing a backpack encompasses the majority of your time. Obviously, there is some give-and-take when it comes to textile breathability and weather resistance. Usually the more weather resistant a garment is, the less breathable it will be. This jacket has a nice balance of the two, and the fact that there’s pit zips incorporated, makes the jacket even more flexible. And, like any good soft-shell, the face fabric has been DWR (Durable Water Repellant) treated to help repel light rain and snow.
I highly recommend the De Havilland jacket from Stone Glacier and suggest that you give it a look. Better yet, be sure to enter our Subscriber Appreciation Giveaway because—you guessed it—we are giving one away!
