in reply to: string wear #55954
another thing that can help patch things up is to wrap some dental floss tightly over the serving where you nock the arrow. When the floss wears out, easy enough to replace it.

Been out twice so far and not even seeing fish yet. Got good and cold though!

You speak of a problem I think about every day… If good people like you don’t show them a better way, how will they ever learn it?
Just wondering out loud…

Not just the plankton, but also the krill. 80% decline from populations seen 30 years ago by some estimates. The ecology of the oceans is collapsing. When they go, it won’t matter how many wolves are in Yellowstone
We’ve converted the bounty of this planet into 7 billion hungry mouths, and little green pieces of paper. Hopefully we can learn to eat them at some point.
And to your earlier point on whether Leopold’s quote about seeing the green fire leave the wolf’s eye’s was about wildlife in general… There are too many other references in SA to the loss of predators and the effects on the land to conclude that he was talking about wildlife in general. I think he was speaking specifically about wolfs (or predators in general). Too bad we can’t ask him what he meant.
in reply to: Side quivers with arrow grippers #49346Well here’s a nice side quiver that I’ve considered from time to time. Lately though, I’ve been satisfied with a back quiver. But I don’t range to far as to need a back pack with it…
in reply to: Ice Cubes! #49327Been seeing some interesting stories about the lakes now that they are frozen over. Ice caves, skate boating, hiking…
great picture!
in reply to: What has happened to Kenny's #49325Well that is a true bummer! I’ve bought stuff from him over the years, and he was always easy to deal with and went out of his way to accommodate me.
For instance, I mix my glue 2:1 instead of 1:1. He’s the only guy I could buy from who would sell me 2:1 ratio’s of glue.
sad day.
in reply to: What's in his mouth?……. a banana!!!!!!!! #49323Right on Dave! Hunting with family has got to be the best.
in reply to: To sleep, perchance to … sleep? #42613I’ll latch onto the requirement for something that guests can sleep on when visiting…
I’ll suggest that maybe you need two solutions, not one. And for guests, the self inflating air mattresses are getting pretty good these days. You can get a pretty cheap queen sized air mattress that’s pretty thick for pretty cheap. And they fold away pretty small when not in use. Very comfy stuff.
Which may not be what you are looking for since it might encourage guests to stay too long… And you know what they say about fish and company, they both start stinking after a few days.
in reply to: Spring fever #42600On the bow – that’s a beautiful green stain. But the goofball that put the leather grip on it needs a spanking.
Makes me want to go out and shoot right now… Except we’ve got about 2 inches of sleet laying on everything. Had to go out in my rubber boots with the air blowing up my skirt whilst I got the generator going. Serves me right for not running it every now and again. But alas it is going and I am typing on borrowed time.
On the maple syrup – Believe it or not, we make some pretty tasty maple syrup in the mountains here. The folks that make it are pretty proud of it, so we don’t get much.
Last time I was in Quebec, I bought about 5 gallons of syrup. Now That’s a deal! I came across the border with 400 lbs of moose meat, 100 lbs of bear meat, and 5 gallons of maple syrup. I was stuck at the border for 3 hours while they verified I was not a smuggler or something.
in reply to: I gotta plan! #37935Well hopefully it doesn’t get so popular that the woods get all clogged up with ’em.
I was going to say something about flushing game, but somebody already went there 😕
I have another stand that is my favorite, so I guess this one would be my number two stand 😀
in reply to: another string question #36265I’ve made strings from both materials, and can’t really say one is vastly different from the other.
I stick with fast flight because it seems more durable and limp to me. The limper it is, the easier to make into a string.
I can’t say I can hear much difference between fast flight and D97. People do say B50 is more quiet because it is more stretchy. I’m too deaf to notice. B50 is way cheaper, but thicker and less durable.
I am one of those cats that sits on the couch making strings while watching TV (fred bear videos usually) but the strings come out well enough.
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #36252That does sound like some good fun!
And not to put a damper on it, but I haven’t heard anybody talk about eating those critters and enjoying it. Last I heard the cutting board was better eating than the critter.
Now I know that can’t be true. So maybe someone with real experience will chime in with what to do with a javelina in order to make it tasty.
