in reply to: Paper Tuning Results – 10/4/14 #40634

My experience with paper tuning is that the arrow is most out-of -wack at about 10 feet. If you are too close (3 feet) it hasn’t had time to move out of alignment. If you are too far (15 yds) it’s pretty much straightened out by then.
Try 3 or 4 yds and see what you get.
But I have to say, after all the fooling around after years of doing it, I don’t mess with paper tuning anymore. Too lazy. Throw a bare shaft and watch it go is about all I do any more.
in reply to: Lost Season, Maybe Worse #27581I was thinking beer helmet. Now there’s a no-hands invention to be proud of…
in reply to: What a year it's been! #27577Nice! But it looks to me like the deer is happier than the hunter 😉
Hopefully this portends many more great seasons!

in reply to: A Milestone Miss #26489That is impressive! But the best part is just that he likes to hunt. You have the makings of some great times ahead. My 15 year old boy has hunted with me a lot, but he has not developed the true desire to hunt, nor has my daughter.
Maybe it will set in later, it is my only hope…
in reply to: Ground Hunnting #26481Great Pictures, and looks like it was a glorious day too. Very Nice!
in reply to: Shooting Gloves #24370I have the PDQ and liked the cordovan overlays, but hated the twisting finger stalls. That’s when I just made my own hybrid glove by sewing cordovan on a damascus glove. It’s been working really well for me.
But I might have to get one of those stick tites and see how that goes too. You will have to let us know if the leather wrinkles up and affects the shot…
Looking forward to a report after a few months use…

Spot On. I like shooting about 60lbs. I shoot it more accurately than lower weight’s. I’m a firm believer that heavier bows are easier to shoot accurately (assuming you can pull them without shaking like a leaf). But I have seen way too many people in your condition. I limit myself to 55lbs, and lust for more.
I damaged the tendons in my string hand (and then both elbows) a few years back and didn’t shoot a bow for over a year. It took about 3 years before I was back to “normal”. It was hard I can tell you. But as a doctor, you know that if you feed your body good food, treat it with respect, and make it work, it can heal itself from most any injury. Even for an old coot like you 😯
But in the mean time, if you want to go ahead and tell me where the deer are hanging out in your honey holes, I’ll make sure they don’t get lonely 8)
in reply to: The Hammock Seat #21978That’s a beauty! Good Job on the sewing!
I am curious as to whether you contacted the manufacturer about repair/replacement?
I’ve been wondering how long mine will last…
in reply to: The Running Woodsman #21970I don’t know if the deer are following the birds or not. I have seen this many times, and always look when a group of birds get flushed. I think it is just that the deer have bumped the birds on their way through. But it is a great heads up that something is coming either way!
I’ve shot more than one deer after being alerted by the birdies… Good Observation!
in reply to: Lock on Treestands #21967I’ve been using the gorilla silverback magnum stands for the last 10 years or so. I really like them, problem is Gorilla no longer makes stands. Hopefully mine will last as long as I need them.
So I really don’t have any good manufacturer suggestions for you. But I find the largest platform and thickest seat are the determining factors for a comfortable stand.
You are right that rails are a no-go with a traditional bow.
I’ve been using rapid rail steps for many years too. They were a great improvement over screw in steps. I like the rapid rails over other strap on steps. Most secure on tree, and most secure on foot.
Get a comfortable harness too. I bought a 100 dollar harness a few years back, and it made sitting more comfortable compared to the free 5 point harnesses that come with the stands.
All that said, I’ve been using the hammock seat a bunch this year. Had a few foxes come by, but no deer yet while using it. It takes a bit to figure the seat out, but it sure is comfortable.
I finally put a tree stand up this week, and will give that a try, maybe tonight…
in reply to: Another One Bites the Dust! #20863I passed my gasses several times before I did finally did sniff them out…
Took me a few more reads to figure out what you fellers was bustin me for 😀 Amazing how a single misplaced letter can liven things up. 🙄
in reply to: broadheads for grouse and pheasant #19809Good Shooting Mr. Hammer! Wish we had some of those critters around here…
Hope he tastes good!
in reply to: Another One Bites the Dust! #19805Well actually… I did bust my noggin. Hit my nose pretty hard. I have a Bill Clinton cartoon nose. Took me a while to miss my gasses too. After I figured out what happened, I went looking for them. I figured I had about an hour before they would be covered by leaves. Anyway, by doing blood trailing circles around the scene of the crime, I finally found them about 20 yards away.
And yes, if you want me to shoot one of your bows, you will have to pay me in advance 😀
in reply to: The Running Woodsman #18724I too have noticed this. I think it is due to temperature. Leaves tend to fall when the temps get below a certain point, and stop when it gets above.
As an extreme example: pecan trees loose all their leaves as soon as the temperature drops a few degrees below zero, but the sun has to hit them. So as soon as the sun rises on the first really cold morning the leaves start to fall. The tree will be bare by 11:00am.
When the leaves start to drop, I always feel like there is no other place to be, but in the woods. It is the best time!
