DK wrote: I am with you guys. I have seen very little blood when trailing the two elk I have shot. I am think about switching to a Simmons or a three blade….

I’ve been thinking the same thing. I’ve had this little voice in my head saying: “There sure ain’t much blood, but look there’s the deer so no big deal.” But the last deer I shot a few weeks ago that I lost to coyote’s might have turned out different had I had a better blood trail.

I was unsure of the hit, and so I backed out till the next morning as I found no blood. As it turned out, the deer didn’t go far. If I had a good blood trail, I probably would have kept looking. The arrow passed through both lungs.

I know quite a few hunters that use simmons heads. And they all give it rave reviews. Despite all these positive comments, I have stuck with the single bevel heads due to the good science Ashby did on them that proves they are killers.

Ashby’s work focused on really large game like asian buffalo. I am thinking that recovering deer may be easier with better blood trails. I think the single bevel heads offer superior penetration and so I would stick with them for elk and such. But for smaller game like deer, the better blood trial of a simmmons head may be more important than the two extra seconds it takes the deer to die…

A fellow I know just got back from hunting pigs in SC. He shot 4 pigs, 2 with simmons, 2 with abowyers. He recovered the two shot with simmons and neither of the two with abowyer. He’s a good hunter who has killed many animals. I trust his description of what happened. Anecdotal I know. But I’ve heard it too many times to ignore.

Since I wrote my first post on this matter I have read Don Thomas’ article and the other related articles and Ducks Unlimited’s response.

On the whole, it seems everyone has said / done something regrettable.

Obviously, Kennedy has not acted in good faith with regard to public access of the river. I think the courts will set him straight.

Thomas’ article was informative, but it did include phrases like “most unpopular man”, “selfish man who inherited his assets”, and “Kennedy’s shortcomings are ethical” which added color to the story (at kennedy’s expense), but didn’t add merit to Thomas’ argument.

Ducks Unlimited’s position that since Thomas was not an employee but just a contributor and thus he isn’t entitled to their loyalty smacks of the poor treatment employers give temp employees. Their attitude that free speech is less important than protecting a donor and their position that they don’t take a position on public land access shows that they have limited vision. Public access and free speech directly impact their core mission. They are blind.

Finally, a few of you may remember that I made a post several years ago regarding a defective archery product that caused me injury, and the weak response from the manufacturer to resolve the issue. TBM deleted the post (with apologies) not because the facts were in dispute, but because the manufacturer was an advertiser in the magazine and the post reflected badly on their product.

It seems we all are guilty, to some degree, of letting money cloud our judgement and maybe of allowing our anger to corrupt our otherwise good intentions.

I know I have learned something from thinking through all this. As long as we’ve learned from something like this, and move forward endeavoring to do better, then the world is a better place for it.

            Well said Ralph.

The number one, get your panties in a wad, most important thing to remember about archery. The thing many folks seem to forget. The thing that makes it worth doing in the first place, and the only thing that will attract kids to the sport, is a simple thing…. Have Fun!!

Missing the target is no fun. So tape a site on your bow and start having fun! No Worries about it.

              That’s a bummer.

But not unexpected. This same scenario has been playing out in America (And the rest of the world I would guess) for a long time.

As the discrepancy between the wealth of the have’s and the have not’s gets greater, the problem likewise gets bigger.

Greed is now seen as a virtue, and a justification.

On this specific instance, it seems a lawsuit would be justified and maybe helpful. When non-profits put the profit ahead of the purpose, they have lost their moral authority, and maybe they should lose their tax exempt status too 😳

There are so many on-line petitions anymore that it seems like just noise. The real way to get change is to make their greed cost the bad guys. I expect they don’t expect you to do anything about it.

Lawsuits cost money. Maybe a kickstart fund raising would get some traction. I’d kick in a couple coins.

While we’re on the subject of upgrades / changes…

At the bottom of the “post reply” window are the “Subscribe to Thread” and “Send Email” things I always have to set to No. Could they be defaulted to “No” so I don’t have to do that every time I post?

                Thanks.

That’s really a nice deer! I would tip my hat to you if I had one one. Thanks for the telling.

Thanks for fixing it! Now can you fix my bad hunting luck of late?

A feature that seems to have gone away is that of hovering the mouse over the thread title and getting a look at the first few lines.

I liked this feature as it saved me from opening threads I may not be interested in.

My experience with the single bevel broadheads has been a little different from others…

The affects I can confirm are:

                        – massive internal bleeding and meat staining similar to a gunshot.

                        – Quick kills, most animals falling within sight in a few seconds.

What I can’t confirm is better blood trails. Like you, I have followed the blood trail of every deer I shot that fell within sight. In most cases, the blood trail was very light. Lighter than it was with 3 blade broadheads. Which is what you observed.

I have shot maybe 20 deer with single bevel heads over the last 6 years. Of those, 16 or so fell within sight.

And congrats on a nice deer, it looks like it will eat well! Good Job.

Spot on! All you have to do is look out the window to see the consequences of this kind of thinking.

Would that be called: “snogging your fletching”? 😳

Or maybe,… “French feather lift”? 😯

Sounds interesting and seems like it aught to work, I’ll try it for sure!

Another Tuesday night spent drinking Coffee and shooting bows… The old woodies held their own with the carbons.

If only I could find a deer to shoot one through 👿

I thought the Letter to the Editor from the kid that had an accident and found traditional bowhunting through reading TBM was a good one too…

And now I wish we had porcupines around here 😳

They look rather spandexy, not like any boxers I ever had.

Camo or not, I’d rather see something like that on the fairer half 🙄 😀
