Whoever invented the $ sure did blow a giant $&IT hole in the natural order of things π― π³
in reply to: What wax do you use on your longbow #49744Dean Torges goes into finishing a self bow in his book “Hunting the Osage Bow”. He recommends treating it with paraffin/wax combo. I forget his exact process.
He did do moisture testing comparing paraffin to poly and other coatings. Paraffin came out on top, and is easy to reapply.
Might see if you can get a copy of his book to see what he did exactly.

Be careful there R2, you are crossing into the badlands. Keeping your eye on the spot while your mind is on your form is like keeping two squaws in your tee pee. It may work for a short time, but soon enough the tee pee is gonna get burned down.
And then you’ll be left standing there all alone and naked in the snow, with everything all shrunk up π³ π

Put 125 gr. or maybe 145 gr. points on them and shoot…
You hear things from time-to-time, and over-and-over, but they never really seem to click. Then one day, a-ha! Click.
All the old timers will tell you the first thing to do is cut your arrows just past the arrow shelf. Howard Hill called any arrow hanging out past the back of the bow “dead wood”.
Wood arrows are so simple to set up, if we let them be.
And here’s an observation that may put me in the poo-poo house with the carbon crowd (to which I once belonged) π³ π π― :
Wood arrows fly like arrows. Carbon arrows fly like darts. What does this mean? Hmmm. Think on it…
in reply to: Your most memorable misses…. #26141I believe Tom said that, not Mark. Though Mark may have had something to do with the conveyance of said remarks…

Is that a lie, or is that literary license? π π
I hate to state the obvious, as I am sure you’ve tried it already, but…
Brace height, brace height, brace height. Bump it up. The bow will get more quiet.
I’ve never seen a bow that won’t get quiet. It may be up there at 9 inches or more of brace height, but it will get quiet.
in reply to: Tuning issues #59873Ralph – Are you sure you don’t need just a little bit more practice before deciding what’s what? π π
I have the brain input = brain fart disease too. Actually, I think it’s not a disease, it just has to do with personality.
Some folks have the ability to draw / hold / evaluate and release the arrow. Rod Jenkens breaks his shot down into 12 steps or something. That never appealed to me. But I have a friend that took his class and can shoot tacks all day long.
I did try to go down that target form path, as I try to be open minded. But I definitely failed at it. That doesn’t mean its a bad path, it just means it was wrong for me.
As Howard Hill observed, in order to shoot well, you have to decide what you want to do. What are your goals?
in reply to: What ya got goin? #59736Ralph, that is some sound advice! Reminds me of the old Fred Bear Africa movie where he trades with one of the locals for a hat made from some elephant hair or something, next scene he’s in the river trying to wash off the lice π³
Alex, I’m a pinhead, at least that’s what my wife says. Not sure what she means really, but there is some small chance it has something to do with hat size. Not sure why you’d give up such a classy cap, but what kind of trade you have in mind? size?
David, I figured it wasn’t the bow for you. Thought I’d throw it out there anyway… Stick to one bow, that is the best path.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #36823That deer looks mighty elky Alex! I agree with David that it makes a nice picture, really nice. Could only be better if you had a smile on your face.
I really like the hat, in fact, I have one on order that should be here any day, maybe even today. I ordered a plaid with some red in it. It’ll be my squirrel/rabbit/deer hat.
I have a 48 pound Black Widow PL that I got in 2012. Never made friends with it. I’d let it go for $600 to a good home, David…
in reply to: Let's See Your Fletching #14187NIce! I guess you use black nocks ’cause everything you shoot at is white?

I’ve never needed an arm guard with a recurve. If you are getting some slap, it may be that your brace height is too low.
