I see how this reply thing works now, hmmm……
in reply to: Now hear this #112066David,
Tried to use the “reply to” button, but it doesn’t seem to work. I was going to reply to your rotisserie suggestion:
I skin the ducks ’cause the fat is supposed to give the meat a bad taste (like that’s possible). Once the skin is removed, there is no fat on a wild duck.
If I cook it this way, I fear I will end up with a petrified duck (insert crazy eye emoji here), still that might be an improvement (insert smily face emoji here)
I love these new emoji’s.
in reply to: Now hear this #111436David,
No good recipe’s yet. Every year I cook them up a different way hoping for better results. So far, the worst part of duck hunting is eating the duck (insert woozy feeling emoji here).
This current batch are getting brined and will get deep fried. We’ll see how that goes…
To me, all ducks taste like liver. I like a little liver, but a whole duck’s worth is a bit much. Makes me wonder why there was such a strong market for the market hunters back in the day.
in reply to: Now hear this #110772Notice how his string arm elbow is nicely in line with the arrow. He has drawn the arrow to the head and settled into a sturdy anchor. His stance is is closed yet relaxed…
As always, the dang duck is at least one step ahead of me 😜
in reply to: Good, Bad, and Ugly #110771I’ll add another sure-fire trick to finding critters… Get lost. Followed up by the close second of falling into the creek when it’s below freezing. I never fail to use these options when the hunting gets slow.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #110227Hey Duncan, that looks like our very own Eno River walk in Hillsborough… Seen many deer, rabbits, and groundhogs along that path.
in reply to: Now hear this #110226Keep your head down Ralph!
Got a few ducks. Now its raining here so hard I feel like a duck.
in reply to: Now hear this #110151Good luck with those deer! I’m heading down to the coast for a little duck hunting. Nothing like hunting ducks in 65 deg weather. Guess I’ll wear my swimming suit instead of my neoprene waders…
in reply to: Now hear this #110065Dave, thanks for posting.
I enjoyed the article, but for one thing… The usual dig at the hook and bullet magazines. While I am in full agreement with the conclusions about them made in the article and elsewhere, it gets tired. It seems we just can’t seem to make our case these days without also taking a swipe at those who don’t share our views. If I was a teacher, and I was gonna grade this essay, I’d have to deduct a few points on this matter for style.
If our case be strong enough, it should stand on its own merit. The point is to inform rational thinkers and sway people of good faith to the truth and right action, is it not?
I also find it interesting that Clay gets all the thanks. He deserves thanks for posting the article, but the author, Chuck Boggs, should get the credit for writing it. All of the comments after the article thanked Clay. Was this intentional? Lack of observation by supposedly observant hunters? Or just bad manners?

It was 0 deg and we got 14 inches of snow on Saturday, by Thursday it was 70 deg.

My icicles are bigger than your icicles 😜 (these emoji’s suck) Just playing with this picture inserting thing. I like that the pictures can be interspersed with the text. I was gonna go squirrel hunting in the snow, but chickened out ’cause I didn’t want to lose my few arrows that I’m shooting now. Getting lazy about making them.

OK, I’m done now.
in reply to: Fine Tuning #99126David,
Not really knowing what’s going on it’s hard to say. But you might try raising the nocking point a bit…
I’ve noticed that temperature plays a big role too. If you wait till a warm day, I bet your arrows fly perfectly…
Ralph,
I used to have wiggle, but it got rusted up 😜 These emoji’s suck.
in reply to: Fine Tuning #99123Hay David, what post would that be?
My guess is that what you are learning to see is the arrow recover from paradox. Every arrow must experience bending around the bow. How they recover is what we describe as tuning.
I believe you are using carbon arrows. If so, shooting a few bare shafts into your bale at 20 yards will tell the story. If they go in relatively straight, with maybe just a hint of nock left, then you are good to go.
On using high FOC arrows – one thing I learned about high FOC carbon arrows is that they recover from paradox quickly no matter how mis-spined they are. The problem is that they don’t go where they are pointed so much. So it’s doubly important to bare shaft carbon with a high FOC setup.
All that said, is the wiggle up-and-down or side-to-side?
in reply to: My first deer of the year #93882I have a friend who own’s an uninsulated and unheated cabin on a lake in Wisconsin a few hours east of St. Paul Mn as I remember. We hunted there 3 years in a row during the 2nd blackpowder week. Never did see anyone else hunting and those we met said we were crazy for even trying. Never did see a deer. Saw other peoples gut piles and lots of fresh deer tracks in the snow. Herded up an nocturnal by then was the consensus.
I guess you proved that consensus to be wrong. Nice deer!
Did I mention cold? Craaaaazy cold 😜
in reply to: Hunting 2017 #93881It’s fun to be covered up with deer! Thanks for sharing.
I saw some squirrel yesterday while moving hay in the rain. Supposed to rain all day today too. So maybe tomorrow…
