in reply to: Where Would You Live? #55403
I’d have to second lemhiman…I’ve been hunting the Copper Basin and country around the Big Lost for a long time now and have to say that it’s right up there with one of the best places on earth.
in reply to: Who Hunts Alone Most of the Time? #58218Well stated Pewango. My hunting experiences are mainly with a friend. We start on the same trail and split up, keeping in touch via a radio from time to time or just finding each other in the head of the canyon we decide to walk. In the end, we all walk alone with our own thoughts.
in reply to: Little Bears of the North Woods #18434Absolutely great pictures. That Bull only gives me more fever to get out this Fall. Thanks Croatoan and Dave for the sharing.
in reply to: Quiver options #18419I use a Selway Bow mounted (friction) quiver because I also carry a day pack when I’m hunting. Food, water, a jacket if the weather changes, a couple of game bags, twine, and a fire starter. A couple of other small odds and ends. I hunt far from the truck and spend 12-14 hours in the woods.
I’d really like to use a back quiver, they seem like a great tool, but I never head into the high country unprepared for weather – which can change quickly in the Rockies.
in reply to: Hunting setup for 2011 season #10490Hey Bob what’s your arrow weight?

in reply to: Interesting Waste of Time #62042Most of my Cabelas marketing mail goes right into the fireplace. That said, it is a great source for outdoor equipment most of which is good quality. However, I don’t buy anything archery related from them except for a hat or two.
in reply to: New Arrows completed for my Wife. #62026Great looking work Steve! Mine are coming along a little slowly, but I’ll post soon.
in reply to: Idaho Trad Bowhunters – huh? #49138I do have experience with the group (Idaho State Bowhunters) dating back several years. I joined for the first time in Ought Six, and received a membership packet, a couple of stickers that I displayed proudly on my Ford, and enjoyed the occasional newsletter. Because I hunt exclusively in Idaho, I felt it was a group that I had some affinity with – despite being a non-resident from (of all places) Kalifornia. Here is their website: http://www.idahostatebowhunters.org/
The next year or two were weird though, and I later came to find out that the then treasurer absconded with funds and there was quite a row, including legal action.
However, the group has since recovered and is back on track as far as I know. They have a great website and great programs.
in reply to: Fence rows, camoflauge trees and creeks. #38552George, That is just not right. I live in California, in the Bay Area, and I find myself getting quite jealous of your spread. Congratulations, it’s a beautiful place. Good hunting this fall.
I like the foamy target idea! I’ve been using old shop rags, towels, and such in pillow cases that I can toss around on a big field at work. I throw them out to unmeasured distances and for fun check it by pacing off after I shoot.
Don’t forget to start walking. My partner and I have committed to walking to the summit of a local mountain each Sunday morning. It’ll not only get us in physical shape as we prep for Fall, but prepare our hearts and minds as we share some man-time together and ruminate about life, our kids, and retirement on the horizon!in reply to: backpack hunts #35949I’ll be heading into a little honey hole this year with my hunting partners, and we’re working on details to backpack up so that we can be “in country” at daybreak. We run the lost river range/pioneer mountains in Idaho, and as a day hunt, it’s 3-4 hours to get to our destination if we start at bottom. Of course, we mess around and have too much coffee in the morning, and by the time we get to altitude it’s 3:00pm.
This year we are planning on dry camping, and bringing just the minimum. But even so, I don’t see how we can get out from under a 50-60 pound pack. -
