in reply to: Elk Hunt – Bad Penetration! #62277
I’m hardly an expert on this, and haven’t had the chance to test these arrows on game yet, but try a sleeve of aluminum arrow that fits snugly over the shaft right behind the head as a footing. I did this to mine (2.5″ footing) and they are tough as nails. I had a carbon arrow break right behind the head a few years back on a deer and I think this will solve the problem. I’ve shot 4×4 posts with this sleeved footing setup, and it hasn’t failed me yet. It also adds to FOC, and I’m sure others on here use the same setup and can attest to the toughness on game. The best part is that 1 aluminum arrow will make almost a dozen sleeves.
in reply to: New Buffalo Bow #60073That’s a nice ‘un!
in reply to: Wool Poncho #54973Thanks guys! I practiced last night whilst wearing the poncho, and as long as you move it up on your shoulder, kind of like pushing up a sleeve, or roll it over Eastwood style while sitting, there is no interference with the bowstring. Hopefully I’ll get to test that on a mountain whitetail tomorrow!

in reply to: New (to me) Shrew Classic Hunter #54968Woot woot! Nice stick! I think you’ll be impressed with the short longbow. 😀
in reply to: Wool Poncho #54134Thanks for the input everyone! It’s calling for high wind and high 30’s where I’ll be hunting this weekend, and I figured I’d put the army blanket poncho to the test. Web Mom, I think I read that in one of his books as well (“Stalking and Still Hunting” maybe?) but I lent it to my brother and he “misplaced” it! I guess I’ll try the poncho first and if I’m lucky enough to get a shot, I’ll give an update on how it went!

in reply to: Made a new quiver for the opener #46092You are very talented Sir! Nice job!
in reply to: Mountain Bikes #38382I’m right there with you. The bob trailer is way lighter and more maneuverable than this clunky game cart I have.
in reply to: Mountain Bikes #37841I set my bike up to hook a game cart to the rear rack. (sorry no pics) There is a great big mountain area in Southwest VA that has roads, but some of it (the best spots) are closed to motorized traffic. Last time I was scouting for ducks on a remote beaver pond at the end of one of these roads, I pedaled right up on a 300lb blackie hunting beavers. (and a bunch of wood ducks) :D:D:D
in reply to: Assumptions and Biases #37647I’ll have to concur with the hunting media blasting everyone with feet per second fever. I had a discussion with the local pro shop owner a couple of months ago trying to explain the reasoning for heavy arrows and FOC, and he just said something along the lines of, “it’s a trend”.
I by no means have an elitist attitude about what equipment I or the rest of the world uses, as long as it is used responsibly and within reasonable distance. (I do not agree with cross guns being lumped into primitive seasons though.) Unfortunately, almost all mainstream publication of information should be taken with a grain of salt and read into, but the MAJORITY of folks neglect to do such and continue to eat the Big Macs they are fed.
My 2 cents.
