Hey Mike,
I’m not sure what the brand or model it is but I have this nifty little over the shoulder number. It’s canvas, olive drab and has two decent sized pouches that have little button clips to hold it all shut. It’s also got a handy little hint sheet on how to set up an M18A1 under the flap.
I’m sure I could rustle up one for you if you wanted it 😉
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #36225Well, I received a very nice gift from a workmate yesterday. It’s a Benchmade Bone collector caping knife. A real little beauty.
in reply to: Ausjim sitrep #34862Hey guys,
I just thought I’d write a little update on what’s going on. A few days ago I finished the culminating assessment for the semester, which was a three week field phase of small unit offensive operations (recons, deliberate attacks, ambushes etc etc). It all went well so I’m lucky enough to have passed the first semester of the college now.
The only spanner in the works is that on day 1 of the 3 weeks I twisted my knee quite badly while standing up with a pack on. I stood there for a few minutes unable to move my leg thinking “Holy hell, I can’t walk.” But sure enough, I was slowly able to hobble off. I limped my way through the rest of the three weeks.
When I got back to civilization the physiotherapist and doctor both seem to think I’ve torn cartilage in the knee. I had an MRI on Thursday so will hopefully hear from the doc next week. Best case is cortisone injections and rest, worst is surgery and fairly long rehab program which would see me sitting in the college’s rehab platoon for 6 months.
I’m a little unhappy at the thought of surgery and rehab, but I’ve already made a list of things I could do with 6 months not really working and right at the top is establishing an archery club for the college. Every cloud has it’s silver lining, but fingers crossed the MRI shows I’m just a big baby and there’s nothing much wrong with my knee 😉
Enough blabber from me… I’m going to make a coffee and catch up on everything I’ve missed in the last few months here on the forum!

Hahaha, what an absolute cracker! I agree that Corbett is a must read.

in reply to: Ausjim sitrep #43757Thanks for the kind words fellas. I’ve been busy as all get out, most barracks days starting at 0530 and wrapping up around 2200. Not a lot of time to myself. Today was the first day of 2015 that one of my bows was strung.
It was a nice moment I can tell you. Even better when the arrow sailed away into a patiently waiting stump.
Hopefully I’ll get some more leisure time as the course goes on and I’ll be able to pest you all more regularly 😉

I was just rereading some Saxton Pope’s stuff yesterday and he purposely cut his arrows to that length, it was like a draw check system for him. I think Hill did the same from memory.

Hey Grumps, those are links to where the photos are stored on your computer, so we can’t access them. If you email them to me I can host them on photo bucket and post them here for you.

in reply to: Noteable Quotes! #27819“For if my mistress find me lying here
She will not ruth or gentle pity show,
But lay her boar-spear down, and with austere
Relentless fingers string the cornel bow,
And draw the feathered notch against her breast,
And loose the arched cord, ay, even now upon the quest”

in reply to: 70lb recurve or longbow #27212Abel, I didn’t notice any difference in speed between my 60# Sage and 70# Barta longbow when shooting the same ~600grain arrow. They were probably different, but not enough for me to notice with the naked eye.
in reply to: Hope you ENJOY #24372Great photos mate!
in reply to: Suggestions: History of Archery Books #24366I know everyone has read it but Hunting With The Bow And Arrow by Pope is in my reckoning unmatched in setting the scene for modern bowhunting.
In terms of broader history I haven’t read or heard of anything coming close to a comprehensive history, covering African, European, Asian and American archery, from prehistory through to today.
I’m eager to see what else is recommended though.. great thread topic!
in reply to: Sold Out Issues? #20569I definitely have and use it as a selling point when I tell folks here in Australia about the digital subscription option.
I also copied all the PDF’s onto a couple of CD’s that I keep at work in case I feel like ‘flicking through’ an old mag during a lunch break 😉
It’s a great feature and very generous of TBM for offering it.
in reply to: Can I get a recommendation? #19895Stix wrote: I found a great closeout deal on some merino wool stuff, 175 thickness. Do you guys like a loose fit, or a form fit?
I’d go form fit, for the reasons already stated and it’s easier to pull other clothes over. Also if the worst happens and you are thoroughly soaked through the wool right on your skin creates a little micro-climate that can help stave off hypo for a bit longer.
