in reply to: Game Cameras #41560

I see the use for camera’s but I personally do not want one or want to use one due to the fact that it would take away the hunt for me. I am going to get some peoples feathers roughed up when I say this but I see is like a crutch, you can find out what you are hunting and when you need to be hunting. It makes the hunt easier and not as difficult…I find this to a big time disadvantage to the game.

The whole thing that gets me excited for this season, its the whole unknown factor. I have spend many hours this past year in early season looking for morels as well as game trails, going back and partially setting up ground blinds. Then heading back again to finish the ground blinds as well as looking for more trails that the game have started using.

If I were to have a picture of what critters are out by my blinds, it does one of two things to the hunt. #1 it gives a disadvantage to the game, I now know what time and how long a animal stays in the area, to me that is not fair game. #2 It spoils the story for me, I don’t want to know that there is a MONSTER buck in my area, because if I am blind and not know he is there and he walks by me…my gosh what a feeling I would get and what a surprise that would be to see for the first time this beast in my hunting woods!

I know I this is my opinion and I know it is different than what majority of hunters believe but I like the surprises that will stumble across us while we are hunting in the woods….Its like a box of chocolates 😆

          Cav,

We both are in the same boat, I picked up my bow last year around this time right before hunting season and did not feel comfortable shooting an animal at that time. This year the hunt is on! I have desided that I am going to be hunting on the same playing field as the game…I will be hunting from a natural ground blinds that I have either set up myself a month ago or a few other natural blinds that I know of, and one natural tree stand where a tree fell over. I also and not hunting for bucks, unless one walks by me :). I think its going to be alot of fun and very challenging to hunt from the ground, but then again if I wanted something easier I would use a compound or a gun! ZZZZIIINNGGG!!!

I saw a similar thing not to long ago a father and his son came out to shoot and had a bunch of monster posters…the kid was having a blast as both of them were shooting at each monsters head and the boy yelling “KILL IT KILL IT BEFORE IT GETS MOM!!”

Needless to say my shots were not on target that night but was more entertained to what was going on the hay bail next to me 😆

I thought it would too, get it a try and find out for yourself. I think you would be quite surprised at the results 😛

I use to have a 31 inch draw length but after reading Fred Asbells books and watching his videos I have decreased my draw by several inches just by adjusting my feet. Instead of my feet pointing perpendicular to the target I now have them facing more at a 30-45 degree angle and that has decreased my draw length due to the fact that I do not have to cross my entire body. I still ankor in the same place though. Try that out

What I ended up doing last night was shooting a bareshaft at 20 yards and it hit the target and it was the straightest I have seen it hit the target….bad news was that it was a foot foot and a half below where I wanted it to hit. I would watch the arrow flight and I would see the arrow flying nock high but eventually would straighten out to hit the target, like I said just very low. I assume adjusting the nock point higher and I will start to see more of a change? I am doing this way to late in the season to be messing around with this stuff now, its going to have to wait till after deer season is done. THEN back to business with it 🙂

I actually have the second nock point. With my sting nock point I have a upper and lower nock point and put my arrow between the two. I asked someone else and there response was the nock maybe sticking to the string which would make since on a couple of the shots, but not all the shots

Yup…same goes with everyone above…brace height. Get yourself a bow square and measure from the deepest part of the throat of the riser to your sting. Talk to the manufactures to see what there recommended brace height for the bow. I played around with the brace height on my new bow quite a bit. I have put my brace height all the way up to 8 inches on my long bow…shot well but my gosh it was loud…I brought my brace height down to 6.5 inches and slapped the crap out of my arm. I have found the sweet spot for my bow is right around 7-1/4 inch to 7-3/4 inch.

Youtube brace height adjustments too if you are still unclear on what to do. I am sure you will be able to find something on there.

in reply to: Is camo necessary? #11408

Sorry if I am repeating anyone here I only read a few of the responses. My opinion is you can where what ever you want as long as the wind is in your favor and you sit still. I have also always questioned camo, basically all what camo does is break up your silhouette. I think you can increase your chances by wearing camo or other clothing that is not a solid color. I am looking into getting s GFA pullover sweatshirt. They have a over sized hood which will shade your face and the colors on the are settle yet blend together. Look at what the old timers use to where, basically what ever they felt like wearing that day…Elmer Fud and his plade red shirt 🙂

Thanks everyone, I will look at my brace height and see if that is out of whack. I have been wanting to wax my string too but did not thing that it would play a major roll in that. The last thing that I will say is I did noticed that when I would take my time and not rush things that the arrows would fly better but the group is not there. What I don’t understand is that he is legally blind….so am I when I don’t have my contacts in. What I would like to know is did he shoot with no contacts in or what? I found this article and it explains it a little more.

I know for sure the next bow that I end up getting is going to be a takedown recurve bow. I am going to get 2 maybe 3 different limbs for it all with increasing weights so I can play around with the heavier poundage and feel even Manlyer when I go to the archery range and the compound boys ask how much weight is that 😆

Thanks for all the insight, I in the process of making two different target throwers for practice. One that toss disk high and another one that tosses bottles roughly 12-15 feet in the air. I am really looking forward to trying to knock this buggers out of the air!

Thanks for the broadhead suggestions too, the more I think about using blunt tips the more I do not like them due to the fact that they will run even if they are hit. I figure if I use something that will pierce them that they will be easier to find since it will be harder for them to run.

Thanks Robin this is so simple and I was over thinking it the whole time. Wish I would have waited to find out more info on launchers and to go out and spend $80 bucks on supplies that are not needed now. Oh well I will try my design out as well but the bad thing about mine is it can only shoot 1 or 2 targets at a time before I have to reload it. This one I can set up several and shoot at them.

                                  Thanks again!

I am going to play around with this idea all weekend I think. Maybe even try to attach tennis balls or smaller bottles to see how it works. OR I could go to the pet store and pick up the doggy pheasant toys that they have for a more realistic shot 😆
