I think very highly of the Damon-Howatt shop work and am very pleased with my mid 90’s Dream Catcher.
The older Hunters are an excellent buy for a great performing and, usually, an accurate bow in most archers’ hands.
in reply to: Arrows for a new old recurve #19027Seems natural to shoot old arrow technology in an old bow. Douglas fir will get you to 620 gr without inserts and with a 125 gr head that will fly like Wing intended the bow to shoot.
Just my wild idea. 😆
in reply to: What's your broadhead and draw weight? #14620Stos 130 gr & RibTek 125S (& 125W, but I prefer the “S”) & Magnus II 125 gr out of 63# and 55# @ 31-1/2″ full-tapered shafts with a 30-3/4″ draw and 600 to 620 gr arrows. Good results and usually a full & clear pass-through with broadside hits.
in reply to: how many arrows for hunting? #59771Five broadheads in the Jack Bowyers side quiver and two blunts. One broadhead in the bow mounted solo stalker with 1/2 of a Selway piggybacker tied to the bow to hold it until needed.
in reply to: To cut or not to cut…arrow length?? #53095Shortening an arrow increases effective spine. I draw 30-1/2″ and, to allow a head taper, cut 1/4″ off a 32″ arrow. That leaves me just a hair of clearance for the head’s shoulder at full draw. I have had to return raw shafts that were under 32″, so I really haven’t had the opportunity to “experiment” with overly long arrows.
We used to believe you shot the minimal length required as weight is inverse to speed. Now speed with traditional gear has become evil and slow is acceptable. How times do change. IMHO there is no justification to shoot a wood arrow of more than 3/4″ more than your draw length provided you have head clearance on your gloved bow had and riser.
in reply to: Found treasure #45404Great bows and a good find!
I’ve got one just like it, same weight but without inserts, that I used to shoot in an indoor league. Nice and stable; if a bit slow by reputation. I draw 30-1/2″ and when you work the tips that way it begins to get perky.

(not restricted to just deer, whatever you’ve been after). Maybe I can learn some good tips for success out in the woods.
Yes, yes and yes. They all can work if there deer are present when you are. Pre-season scouting to find where the deer are and when can pay off big time – but putting time in the woods and taking advantage of the opportunity that presents itself is important as well. I start and end the day in a tree stand. Climb down about 10:00 AM and still hunt. Sit in a few likely spots here and there and end up back at my tree stand at 2:30 PM +/- for the last hours of daylight.
in reply to: Un-Duco-ing nocks, best removal method #43061I microwave a cup of water to boiling and then dip the nocks.
To tighten – same with a pinch instead of a twist off.
in reply to: I might go crazy trying to figure this out #38050Not familiar with your bow, but I have taken rasp and file to wood risers designed for elevared rest to ge a good curved riser with small contact area.
If yours is a metal riser you might need to build it up 1/4″ with something like J-B Weld or PC-7 and form a radiused shelf.
Happy Labor Day to you as well.
But I threw up a little in my mouth at the thought.
Bales are for practice. IMHO game should be hunted where they are free. I know not all preserves/pens are the same – but I have only seen what I consider game farms where the prey is shot at the feed troughs. Granted, I know some hunters condition “free range” deer and bear to arrive when desired with feed timers. That sickens me as well.
It should be all about a kill at any cost.
in reply to: Effective range based on accuracy #27661I practice intently out to 25 yards. I practice roving & field archery to 80 yards.
But I limit my whitetail shooting to 20 yards. Maybe a hair over.
I have passed on 15 yard or under shots that didn’t “feel” right due to cover or angle. I’m sure someday there might be a 25 yard shot that does feel right and I’d take it.
in reply to: What are your plans? #27657Just some local whitetail action on my property. Work has been insane and I hope I get opening day.
in reply to: Dumb arrow length question #17726Deepest part of the nock to the shoulder of the head.
Add 3/4″ for the head taper and you’re all set.
in reply to: hunting feathers #27272Three 5″ parabolic.
