All I can say is… I have taken few shots that I have regretted, but I have never regretted not taking a shot.

I don’t think either of you are wrong on your positions on this. Your friend is obviously motivated and driven. But what drives him? The “I Must Hunt Every Day” attitude I believe will eventually lead to burn out. As the old saying goes.. “everything in moderation”. Obsession is not healthy.

All good feedback Gents. Thanks. But you are all correct about one thing, it is a tough question, I should have realized that because it took me quite a few minutes to think about it too.

I have a motive for this. Other than the standard survey data. I want to get actual feedback from Traditional Bowhunters. I would like to list all the reasons and use them as discussion in my next hunter ed certification class.

Thank you all. And Good Hunting!

Steve… I wish you the best of luck in resolving your personal situation in this. It is sad. Your hunts may require a little more of a roadtrip. Do some research on available places to hunt. Many states like my home state rent cabins on state forest lands during the hunting seasons. Sure it public land, but it puts everyone on equal ground, so to speak. I have found, many times I have whole areas to hunt all to myself during bow season. I’ve also had the opportunity to hunt “Bow Only” and QDM areas, which tend to draw the “better” hunters of good character, if you know what I mean. Or simply, you may need to join a private club.

Good luck to you & your partner.

One thing I enjoy about the TBM Website is Civility and Courtesy. I have no problem with food plots or simil;iar supplemental feeding. Feeders and baiting… for deer, I don’t like it, for other animals like bears… why not? Baiting Bears would give you the opportunity to look over several animals rather than shooting the first that comes along. I don’t think there is an easy answers for all situations – It Depends.

Nice post. But, you have shared experiences and memories that are yours forever.

Wow! And I’m complaining because our archery deer season hasn’t even opened yet, It goes from the first saturday on or after the 15th of October and runs to the friday before Thanksgiving. Then 3 weeks of Gun season and then a final week of Blsack Powder and late archery season. Luckily, you can hunt with your bow through all the seasons, and there is access to bow only hunting areas during the firearms seasons as well.

I have found that it will work initially. But it is a curiosity scent. Use it more than once in the same area and the deer wise up quickly. But, last year in three different areas, I had four different bucks come in to investigate the stuff.

The one problem with treestands is folks wind up hunting the perfect tree instead of the tree location.
Only pick straight trees and stay within the guidelines of tree diameter.
                            Do not use dead trees.
Do not use Beech or Birch trees – the bark slips easily off the tree.
Do not use lose bark trees (e.g., Shagbark Hickory).
Make sure you are not silohuetted.
Make sure you have pruned your shooting lanes for clear shooting.
You still have to watch the wind, and be pay attention to Thermals.
Make sure you can get into and out of your stand area undetected
Have a cell phone on your person and make sure someone knows where you are.

Steve Sr. I am really glad you found your deer! A hunter with compassion and a conscience is a good thing. You’re one of the good guys so I am genuinely glad for you!

Somemtimes stuff happens. But, the shot not taken is the only one that cannot be judged. None of us ever stop learning!

It is an exce;;eent idea! Fred Asbell wrote an article in TBM about keeping a journal recently. It’s not only good for writing down fond memories, but also a history of your hunts, I like to keep note of things like date, weather, wind direction, animals seen. Helpful things to know for future hunts.

All the best to you & your son!

I use two anchors… my middle finger is on my upper lip with my index finger on the crease of my nose. Second anchor is chin to the shoulder. My sight picture is an aligned bow arm and arrow shaft to the spot on the target.

                                  in reply to: Scent-Lok #14065

I agree that the important thing is to stay as clean and as scent free as possible. I don’t buy into scent-lok though figuratively or literally, they have tried unsuccessfully a half dozen times to get a patent and haven’t, from what I have read. Given that record, why would anyone want to pay 3 times as much for clothing – go figure. 🙄 I do use scent elimination sprays and there are some on the market that are very good, including anti-mycrobal sprays that are germ killers as well as oder killers. However, they are another tool in scent elimination not a solution , and there is no substitute for clean odor free boots and clothing and hunting the wind.
