in reply to: Does altitude affect arrows? #46397
Interesting. Can’t say I’d ever really thought about this before, but it gives me another great reason to live at altitude!
in reply to: Dividing the spoils #44177I’m typically only hunting with more than one other person if it’s bird hunting. And on extended bird trips with a group, we always just divide it all up at the end of the trip. It’s not really about the “meat” anyway.
When it comes to bigger game, it’s usually only when one of us gets an elk that a few phone calls might be made to help with packing out. And in those cases, meat is always shared as a ‘thank you.’
in reply to: New bow for elk trip #43030That’s a beauty! I really like the “smoky” looking grain on the limbs. Well done!
in reply to: What to know about Stalking #42953Wolfshead –
Hard for me to add anything to the wealth of knowledge and advice already given in this thread, but if you’re interested, there are two resources that I would highly recommend;
“Stalking and Still-Hunting (The Ground Hunter’s Bible) ” by G. Fred Asbell
&
“Tom Brown’s Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking” by Tom Brown
Both have a deserved place in the traditional woodcraft & hunting library, imo.
in reply to: Webmom's Day #42140Thanks for putting up with us, WebMom!! 😀
in reply to: What ya got goin? #42116Some high quality stumpin’ was had today! Went on a 7-mile hike back into the hunting grounds to see what sort of fresh sign might be around, and of course, to mercilessly lay waste to every stump in our path.
On the hike in:
Spring is finally coming to the high country (this is at about 7000ft):
A little lunch break:
And then it was time to get down to business:
Came across some not-too-old elk sign:
And some pretty old elk sign:
What else is there to say? It was an awesome Sunday, and good to finally stretch the legs with the Quick Styk!
in reply to: All these new bows,, guess I better show mine #41747Beautiful work, Troy!
And I agree with everyone on the stipling = I wish it was an option on more bows. I’ve had several trad bows that are slick as heck once the hand starts sweating a little.
in reply to: Getting in shape #40594You’re right, Alex, and who am I kidding, given my post above? I’m sure that in the end, I’ll just stick to what I’m already doing – shooting my bow a lot, trying to eat well (but good beer is non-negotiable….)and staying generally active at altitude. I need another “thneed” like a need a whole in the head. 😉
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #40592A recent acquisition – the BR ‘Trail Buddy.’ An updated, slightly-streamlined version of the classic Marble’s ‘Woodcraft’ knife:
Another time-tested, very versatile design that I can already tell will be seeing a lot of belt time this season.
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #40588The Nessmuk got pressed into kitchen duty the other day, for a fresh batch of jerky. For a knife with such a beefy spine, I’m always amazed at how well it does on fine slicing tasks. Just a wonderful, all-around design:

Music to my ears, Dave. Highly looking forward to both.
in reply to: Send Through the US Postal Service!!!!!! #39987That absolutely sucks, and I feel for your loss. If you have the time and energy, I would keep hounding them. Many companies have an unwritten policy of denying claims outright, until you make it not worth their while anymore. But it’s infuriating that that’s what it might take.
I have only shipped and received bows through USPS, and never had a problem. But I have also heard that getting insurance with the PO is absolutely worthless, if you ever hope to collect on it. Still, they seem to be the best option, and hopefully it never comes to that.
On the bright side, congrats on the new Widow! Love to see some pics when you have a chance.

And don’t forget Rule #31 – Always check the back seat. 8)
I love that movie too.
Back on topic, I’ve been thinking of picking up a bowfit, but always wondered if they were worth it. Sounds like folks on this thread who use them think so, so I might pick one up.
in reply to: Backcountry in the Bighorns/Wind Rivers #39939Jans –
When are you thinking of going? It’s true that the Winds can get pretty busy in the summer, but the backcountry fishing can be a whole lot of fun, and like most places, if you’re willing to break away from the trail, you can definitely find some remote areas.
in reply to: NO MEATHEADS yet? #38557Steve Sr. wrote: Half out of the saddle still…..maybe more than that, my trad urges won’t rest.
For those recalling my few posts, I’m still kicking. Just not too high but thankful none the less.
Good to hear from you again, Steve! Don’t be a stranger. 😀
Joe – any plans for a screw-in version of the Meathead?
