Problem with hearing wolves I find is that game can be scarce. One trip north for moose in a once lucrative spot was dismal. Saw heard wolves all the time. Still makes for a awesome hunting experience! My first trad hunt, I had one walk up to within 20 yards of me. Would of came closer, but I chickened out. Was hiding behind a tree and he had no idea I was there! Pretty cool!
in reply to: Wild Voices #38630Last year at elk camp when I would get back at dark, there would be a pack of wolves howling nearby as I ate my super. Dinner and a symphony! Loved it!

Smithhammer, how about a few more pics of that knife? Looks very interesting!!
Here ya go:
7″ overall
3.2″ blade
CPM3V steel
Wow! Slabs are antler? Is the blade gun blued or just a real dark patina? How do you like the CPM3V? I hear its real tough stuff!

Wow that’s nice! Dave, love the simple design! Looks great!

in reply to: Moose & Ticks #29225Many, many years years ago I was out for a walk on my friends section of land, (winter), and I came across a young bull just laying there. He had so many ticks that his hide seemed to be moving! It was gross! He was unable to move, and died shortly after.

in reply to: Quality, yet affordable knife suggestions? #25131X2 on the Mora’s! If you want to save some cash, buy one with no handle for about $10, and make a handle yourself. Lots of vids on YouTube about that! Do some research on knife steel so you know what not to buy, stuff like AUS8 will get dull just thinking about cutting something! There are lots of knife makers out there that won’t charge you a arm and a leg for a good knife, look for a local one, and like AusJim said, small blade, big handle!! Have fun, good luck!!

in reply to: Colorado elk herd size? #20714David Petersen wrote: CO has far more elk than the advertised number, which is consistently reduced to keep the public land welfare ranchers from complaining even more than they already do about the wildlife eating “their” forage. The bull:cow ratio is misleading because they count any branch-antlered bull as mature, which they definitely are not insofar as in a healthy balanced herd even 5×5 bulls rarely get to breed and the raghorns don’t have a chance. So biologically the mature bulls (5×5 and up) are less than half what they advertised. But then the average hunter is happy to bag any legal bull, so the deceit isn’t that harmful to hunters, but it’s very harmful when management claims they have achieved sufficient mature bull/cow ratios when they’re not even close and manage, or mismanage, accordingly . In that case it’s a damn lie.
The bottom line is that CO has more elk than any other state or province, and some really good ones if you can get away from roads and ATV trails, far away. The machines and technology are killing elk hunting here.
I was impressed that you guys have almost 10 times more elk than us, and you about a third the size!

It will be 265000 minus 1 after I kill mine, bull or cow!!!8)
Wow, impressive! Here in Alberta, herd size is estimated at 25000. Colorado is about 270000 sq. km, while Alberta is about 662000sq.km!

Out of the sheaths. The ceramic insulator on the dowel serves as a sharpener similar to a crock stick
An Uncle Henry…
A few more. The Browning my boys gave me when I was Supervisor of Operations of a NG Distribution Company. The sharpfinger was my first real deer huntin’ knife. Picked up the uncle henry in a junk shop in VA.
Some favorite folders. one of them was always in my pocket when in the woods or just outdoors. The Buck Lite more so than the others, it was a gift from the wife. Folk lore says knives are bad luck if given to a spouse. Must be nothing to it. I’ve had her for 30 years and the knife for 25. Skint my speed goat with the one in the middle.
Nice! What are the ones in the first (top) pic? They look handmade! Ceramic insulator in a dowel= genius!! Good thinking!! Love that idea!!
