in reply to: Scentless waterproof spray? #55190
I missed the fabric part of your question….sorry. I gave up on boots with fabric being water proof long ago. I do have one pair I wear for turkeys, but all of my boots are now leather or leather/rubber.
in reply to: Scentless waterproof spray? #53201I like Montana Pitch Blend, seems to me pine pitch and beeswax are pretty natural smells.
in reply to: Merino wool pants #53197Dave – Having spent a small fortune looking for the perfect wool pants, I have come full circle and decided my first choice was my best….Filson. Thier heavy wool pants aren’t what your specification calls for, but they are the best I have found.
By larger than necesary, don’t be afraid of an annula dry cleaning, air themout afterwards, and store them so the moths can’t attack. You will be happy.
As an aside….moleskin pants are pretty darn great in temps above 20 degrees. I know that “cotton kills” in the wet cold, but moleskin seems different.
in reply to: Bear kills deer #37666Very nice!
in reply to: You know you might be wired different when… #35767I completely relate to those 3 pictures. Awesome!
in reply to: Opinons on Misses While Hunting #34510I’m 48, have bowhunted all my life, and used a compound for 3 years in my early 20’s. I missed more deer with a compound than I have with traditional gear.
That said, I have made some SPECTACULAR misses, and over time I have found a link….if in my mind, I have already killed this deer, and I’m thinking about the rack, and how much fun it’s going to be to show LaClair, my Dad, etc……..I WILL MISS. EVERYTIME.
So now I have a different attitude. I quit caring if I kill the deer. I quit thinking about it, and just hold out for that perfect slam dunk shot. And now I rarely miss.
I had one coming in tonight…a great little buck for the area I was hunting. I felt that old “can’t wait to show my Dad” feeling creeping over me….and I made myself STOP thinking that way. He was a dead buck….except the wind shifted

in reply to: "Blood trailing" light? #23218Preparing the lights for a night time bloodtrail at Shrewhaven…this trail eventualy took us into Wisconsin!
in reply to: "Blood trailing" light? #23212We track a lot of deer every year, usually at least 1 per day up at Shrewhaven. We have tried lots of lights….the red and blue “tracking lights” are junk, in my opinion. The crazy bright tactical lights work pretty well, but burn through the batteries. LaClair and I were on a trail in a snow storm one night, he had a new Surefire….I bet he used 10 batteries.
After much trial and error, we rely on the good old Coleman lantern.
in reply to: Harvest is not a 4-letter word. #21210Steve Sr makes a good point…..there is a difference between someone who has used the term forever (I’m shocked that PA regs has used it since 1929), and someone using it to appear PC.
I have nothing against ALL PC verbiage….I have no desire to offend folks “just because”….but with game animals, I “hunt”, “kill”, and use them as food. When discussing hunting with others, I may use sentences like “We generally eat 4 deer per year”, as opposed to “We harvested 4 deer last year”.
