Steve , I did in fact measure the inside of the insert and the shank of the steel adapter . Increments are in my first post .

I believe this is one of the major problems . I may be wrong .

I was looking closely at the alum. insert ,threaded onto the steel adapter ,,,,not tight ,,not snug ,,,,maybe .010 inch between alum. and steel . It seems to me that even though it were tightened and hit at even the slightest of ODD angle or radiused surface the steel could/would flex ,and once it starts it simply is magnified by a heavy shaft. ???????????

What would help ,,,in my opinion,,,would be a tapered hole in the insert ,no matter what metal it is made of. A tapered shank on the adapter would of course mate up with the insert and eliminate the flex .

I am considering filling the unsupported area with hot melt glue .

        Thank you MR. FURLONG ,

I appreciate your responce with such detail and thought .

I’m actually wondering if a ”REAL” fool proof arrow can be made . That is , and stay within desirable FOC , and arrow weight , and good velocity , without occassionally bending an arrow or insert or both .

I shot at a squirrel . I pulled the shot and clipped a 1 inch sassafrass sapling with the ”HAMMER” blunt . It ruined the shaft . Point being , that a 688 grain arrow from 51# , @ 152 fps was ruined . What about an arrow at more velocity and greater FOC hitting the radius of a rib or a shoulder blade .

I realize there are so many possibilties that can happen when an arrow strikes the target , it makes me wonder if there will ever be a ”REAL’ cure for this problem .

Mr Petersen,,,thank you for your post . I understand what you are saying . I was merely PLAYING with FOC .

I was some what taken back by the marginal increase in FOC by installing the 150 grains . Slightly over 20 % . ???????

At any rate , I am very pleased with the results of the test and the results from the original arrow .

In my estimation , when an arrow leaves the bow at 12 -14 yards and zips thru a mature deer in the vitals and it doesn’t know what happened ,,,to the point it just stands around looking in all directions ,,,I think that is pretty close to perfect. Never seen that with the TRASH broadheads I used in the past .

The aluminum inserts in my arrows do trouble me . Just knowing that it is the weak link in the system is very aggravating. I suppose I will have to fire up the metal lathe and turn out some steel to fix the problem .

My present arrow is as follows :

            full length 2216 Legacy =31.750”

            5.5” shield cut feathers

            bohning classic index nocks

            standard aluminum inserts

            125grain steel broadhead adapter

            125grain Ace Standard broadhead

            total weight = 688grains

            FOC =19.11%

            They shoot like darts from the 45# @ 28” Grizzly,,,55# @28” Jeffery,,,45# @28”Super Kodiak. Draw length is 30.750”

Slow ,,,very slow ,,,,,,but quiet ,quiet .

I do appreciate your post ,

            Mark

I have seen that ”MY LIFE AS A WILD TURKEY” on PBS . Truly amazing . I hope to see it again .

I’m an addict of turkey hunting as well as a student of the turkey .

At this time I am shooting an early ’80’s Jefferey , 62” , 55#@28”. It was my Dad’s bow .

Just recently got another of Dad’s from my younger brother .

                1970 Bear Grizzly , 45# @ 28”,,,,56”bow. I took a deer with it in ’88.

Last February ,I ordered a new 64” Super Kodiak from 3 Rivers Archery . 45# @ 28”. Mounted the Fred Bear Custom quiver and filled it with Legacy 2216’s ,,125grain AceStandard broadheads on 125gr steel adapters.

Between set up and the week between Christmas and New years I doubt I missed more than ten days of not shooting .

One morning after xmas I was enjoying my coffee and holding the SK. As I slid my hand along the lower recuve I felt something rough . I quickly got under a strong light and discovered the glass on the belly side was separating from the maple. I nearly puked !

Immediately stripped the bow and called Bear Customer Service . They are replacing the bow . It should be here any day now . They have been on back order on this model and I’m told by the Rep. at Bear they are hand made , one at a time .

I didn’t shoot at the fox . Ohio’s Fox season expired Jan. 31.

Had I taken the shot this is how I would have done it . I would have let him pass by to around twenty yards just to avoid being seen drawing . I would have picked an imaginary spot straight over his back , and beyond him about 20 inches .

I have shot at them before and their REACTION time is so fast they are never where the arrow is when I aim directly at them . They have ALWAYS gone striaght away from the sound of the bow .

If I ever get one there will be plenty of pictures .

We have such a high number of coyotes , which have all but wiped out the little foxes . I hadn’t seen any foxes here near home for some time and had imagined they had become supper for the ‘yotes . It was a pleasure in itself to see this red .

40 years ago the Red Fox was what I spent most of my time chasing . That was before the deer population explosion here in southern Ohio . Before the ‘yotes too. And , before the art of turkey hunting got in my blood .

During the time I was shooting in string #1 I made #2 . After I was certain #1 was shot in and satisfied with performance I carefully removed it without losing any twist , and then tied the ends together .

When I get the New warranty Super Kodiak , hopefully in a few short days , I’ll put one of these strings on it and see how she does .

Uh ,,,I don’t own a bow square ,,,,,,,,,,,hope ya won’t hold it agin me .

Yeah ,,,,,It would have to be a long time since the last meal to sit down to a ‘yote. I undressed one in ’96 and there ain’t much there to cook .

                            Sorry , I can’t do the photo . 3 Rivers carries them . Comes in a 3 pack . Up to 250 grain .

I have been stumpin’ and squirrel hunting with mine , which are 250 gr. They are great . Drilled a squirrel between the ears . Looked like a 22 mag hollow point hit it.

After literally hundreds of shots into the ground they can still cut .And they hook up on weeds and grass making them nearly impossible to lose.

Those high wind days are good for stalking , too. One must train theirself to take 12 inch steps ,,,even less sometimes . Always target the bigger trees .Make it a point of destination to always stop by a big tree to break up your outline . You must work toward them as your next stopping point . At the same time watching and scanning the whole area and as far as you can see clearly .SLOWLY.

Be aware of saddles and gulleys . All game will go to them , even under pressure ,,,generally . The slightest depression in the landscape is an attraction to all prey species for escape and general travel . Predators follow this same path to aquire a meal . Think about it ,,,,a lot !

Predators favor high spots for bedding . Prey favor lower spots , hillsides and beside low ridges that create the lee side of wind currents . They always bed with their butt toward the wind . This enables them to SMELL any approaching danger from upwind . Their eyes and ears cover the downwind side . It’s generally best to approach a bedding area with a cross wind in your favor.

Time is critical . If you are pressed for time ,,,like you must be somewhere at a certain time ,,,,don’t ruin your chance by trying to step up the pace and rush things .

BIG GLASSES. Use them from every stopping point in your stalk . And , be advised , on overcast days with a snow on the ground , things begin to look either black or white . Slow dow ,,,use the binocs ,,,check each and every shape .

                              Best of huntin’ to ya

I just found and read this entire thread . Many thanks to all .

Having a more clear understanding now , along with using the BOP measurement , my arrows FOC is up 4.61% , to 19.11% .

                                Thanks.

Glad to have found this site . Mark Hay is my name ,,,archery is my g,,ga,,gam,,,,passion ,,,,,right next to turkey hunting .

Live in southern Ohio ,,,,born and raised here . Married to Linda for 21 years ,,happily !

Very few days pass without archin’ a few arrows downrange. Spot , or stump shooting is my favorite practice .

I love a challenge . Turkey hunting with a trad bow and no blind is to me the ultimate. Came close last spring ,,,but I just smiled as he ran away , keepin’ that big cedar between us .

Found this site to be most enjoyable .

Rerally lookin’ forward to talkin’ with you all .
