in reply to: Grizzly hunt! #17379

      Hi Fellas

Haven’t been around for awhile…biz, family and fly fishing….however, getting back to the time of year I shoot almost daily, (instead of weekly when twisting up bugs!)

Anyway, yes I’ve hunted coastal browns w bow….they’ve won both times. Hunted and killed black bears. Let WAY more walk then I’ve killed. Yes, they are delicious. Processed and ate (or donated) every bit of that wonderful sweet meat (also known as “pork of the forest”). Tried griz tenderloin and, yep, I’d eat it again! I don’t need to kill a bear rather, what I need, is that experience of hunting the predator. To me, it’s much more exciting/interesting then hooved game (don’t get me wrong. I LOVE deer hunting and planning first elk /moose trips in coming seasons). Just something about the majesty of being one on one, stick in hand with ” kings ” of the forest. I harbor no over-aggrandized feelings of danger or the ” they bite back ” idea. Just something about hunting them, on their turf, the right way. Nothing like it. Been treed by blackie, numerous sticky run ins with them…only twice truly in the presence (I mean bow shooting distance) of big browns and I have to say the experience was awe inspiring….lots of stories about it but that’s for another post. Some day I hope to garner the funds to give it another try! In meantime, I have dates with blackie in my beloved Adirondacks and Maine this year…:D

Make no mistake, IMHO Bitzenburger hands down the best jog out there. However, when packing up to head into ” the bush” lite wins and lite the Bburger ain’t, which is part of the reason it’s a superior fletching jig. The EZ Fletch doesn’t weigh much and appears to pack like a toothbrush case. I’m thinking of getting for trips etc BUT I am definitely concerned if it can’t fletch up a LW helical.

Both here in Jersey and Adirondacks we get the critter as soon as possible. We try to never leave one overnight if avoidable. In last 6-8 yrs I’ve had damn near every deer left overnight (maybe 4-5), or at least some part of it, “donated” to local the coyote population 👿

I do like shooten’ them though ….

Had a pair of Russell’s made in 07 before safari to So Africa. They were pricey but worth every penny…give great support. I wear them now for small /upland game as well as some warmer deer hunts….:D

Every time we cross into Drum, there they are. They don’t even move. Trying to spook them is useless. They just look at you like you are insane. Every trip to Drum, regardless of time of year, I see them. They laugh at me. If only I could get my bow. 😈 👿 😈

Anyway, I do not know much about the laws there, but when I go up to other areas, I do see quite a few snowmobile routes. I assume these are used by ATVs during the warmer months. I really do want to look up the organizations that are fighting to limit ATV use, but as Gamagoat said, there are no chapters here to get involved in. Anyway, Dave has much more experience in these situations than I do, so I have no reason to doubt him. Be well.

                    😀

                    Hey Alex

I’m an Adirondack guy (when I’m not stuck in NJ!). Correct, atv use is illegal on State Land, Wild Forest Land etc. there is a handicap permit available. Snowmobiling a bit different as there are designated routes etc (there are for atvs as well, just not on State Land). As for hunting, the snowmobiles aren’t nearly as big an issue as that season doesn’t open until all big game seasons are over (plus there is that need of snow issue 😀 ). Of course grouse, coyote and a few other things are open at that time. Also, it appears to me that the snowmobiles don’t do near the damage that atv’s do. I am an avid user of both, along with my family and we always stay on approved paths/trails etc for either vehicle. Really burns me up to hear the atvs when hunting knowing they are in an area they aren’t allowed to be…not only do these outlaw riders do virtually all the damage (as opposed to the responsible users who obey the rules) but they give us legitimate riders a bad name…

If you start a chapter up north, let me know…I’ll join in! 😀

That’s the thing. I love the bow and as Dave said, a new bow, especially one I designed w the bowyer, is a “rare and special thrill” AND the killer is, she shooting pretty sweet!8). I still have quite a bit of work to do but even with the work yet to be done, you can tell she going to be a shooter. No stack, smooth, no handshock in a 54″ 60# bow!!

I’ve read/heard quite a bit that this is a fairly common occurrence where each limb not necessarily symmetrical. Assume can’t hurt the bow…:?:

Just little things like this can keep u awake at night 😆

I’m only about 15-20 miles So West of Blue Mt Lake, of course hour and half on the back roads which is fine with me! If there’s gotta be roads I like the small, windy, pretty ones 😀

Well guys, leaving “Our Woods” in the late am (named by our two sons as toddlers when they would always ask “when are we going to Our Woods Daddy? 😀 )

Deer everyday. Big owl perched on my barn each night. Coyotes singing each night but tonight ( rain maybe keeping them quiet?). Uncooperative trout but scenery too beautiful to mind. No good shots at anything I felt compelled to shoot at.

If my boys’ weren’t kicking off tomorrow night I wouldn’t be going anywhere….

Beauty of the whole thing?? I’ll be back up next week.
