in reply to: Wood, Woody weights, high FOC, etc. #37531
I just put together a few cedar arrows with woody weights and a Zwickey No Mercy attached to that. I have a 53# longbow I made and a 29.5 inch draw. On the 60# spine Im getting good flight out to about 15 yards, which is my effective range.
I used ferr l tite and havent had anything come apart but Im going to buy some 225 tuffheads. My feeling is that with the weights there is just one more link in the chain that can fail.
Im new to the HFOC idea as well so my experience so far is VERY AMATEUR.
in reply to: FOC and a deadline! #31496Thanks! I put together 6 arrows with the 205g point set up in 3 different spines. Once it cools down ill be shooting them tonite.
Everyone tells me something different about the deer here in Ventura County, SoCal mulies, blacktails or pacific hybrids. I hunted mulies when I lived in UT so Im calling them mulies here as well.
Cover hunting will be new for me so we’ll see how it turns out.
I was out in Carrizo Plain looking for bucks this past weekend and saw the biggest one of my life. When I glassed him it turned out to be a Tule Elk with a herd of 60 or so coming up behind him! 30 minutes later a herd of Pronghorns came within 20 yards. Not the type of wildlife i was expecting to see in So Cal! Of course, we didnt see any bucks. A few does and that was it.
in reply to: FOC and a deadline! #31383Ill be going after Blacktails. Im in Ventura County. Theres a lot of not so definitive info on whether the deer here are btails or Pacific Hybrids. I am going to get my FHL pass in the fall to go for pig. Never hunted them before and I hear FHL is pretty good.
Ill check out Tuffheads for sure. Good to know the woody weight and head will be alright.
Thanks man!
in reply to: Looking for Staves in Colorado #24091You can always try a board bow. In the traditional bowyers bible vol. IV (I think Dave meant 4 not 6) there is a good description on your first board bow. A lot of lumberyards will have hickory and ash available and lowes usually has red oak. You can make a solid hunting bow out of a board in 10 – 12 hours without too much experience.
Dave is right, tracking down a stave would be tough. A board might be just what you need.
Have fun!
in reply to: Osage Tiller Opinions Please **UPDATED** #15083With the 1/2″ tips I find that Osage can give some gnarly hand shock if the outer limbs aren’t working enough. Still, good work, taking game with a self made bow is incredible.
Looking forward to seeing the final outcome!
in reply to: Osage Tiller Opinions Please **UPDATED** #13522Nice looking bow. Maybe some more bending from midlimb to tips, looks like some long levers. Dimensions?
in reply to: Is camo necessary? #10516Camo is to hunting as seat belts are to driving. They are there for the unexpected surprises. With all our stalking practice, wind awareness, behavior education, calls, spotting and scouting, stand selection etc, even when these are top notch, we get surprises.
The best seat belts won’t make you a better driver and the best camo wont make you a better hunter.
in reply to: Recurve or Longbow… #8208A 55# longbow is not a play thing. Unless of course the elk are playing back!
DP brought up the reflex/deflex design (and i think he meant longbow vs. recurve), which is my personal favorite. And slowing may be a good idea but….. making a hunting weight reflex/deflex is a fun and rather straightforward project. Moreover, making your little one a personalized bow from dad would be pretty sweet. And you can do it for pretty cheap.
I guess what Im getting at is that archery has many facets to explore. It is totally possible to experience for yourself what a 65# r/d longbow feels like without dropping a good deal of coin.
Anyways, have fun!

in reply to: Wood and FOC #42492This is a great discussion. Im making some woodies, ash footed with ipe for my 54# bamboo backed ipe bow I made recently. Im getting around 550 grains before fletching and BH. Im looking at the Grizzly 160 or 170 grains whenever they become available again. Im in Southern CA now, used to be in Moab UT and hunted the La Sals, damn I miss that place! At least the bug got me again!
in reply to: Grizzly broadheads, redux #28731Anyone ever use the Lansky guided sharpeners for these? I use it on ym knife and get hair popping sharp edge on a regular basis.
in reply to: Bareshaft FOC? #22035Thanks all
The FOC is real low right now so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong. Thanks a bunch.
