This is can be problem with Oaks also. We have had Oak Wilt go through our area and the roots also root off about 10 years after the tree has died. We have been working for the last 6 years at our cross country ski trails cutting anything standing dead that can fall and reach the trail. We have been cutting between 250 to 300 trees a year. There have been 2 near misses at the city bike trails because falling dead limbs it is always wise to look into the canopy before picking a tree to sit by or climb and hang a stand.
Thanks for the great article Don. I can now use this as proof to the wife that I am not to old for that kind of stuff.:D

in reply to: Tip on straightening wood shafts #62023I have always used a old piece of polished deer antler. The only shaves that needed more than that were some hickory I tried once.

Ek’s Laws of Nivean Locomotion:
1. Never walk when you can snowshoe.
2. Never snowshoe when you can ski.
3. Never carry something when you can drag it.
4. Never drag something when you can get a dog to do that.
5. Never rely on a snowmobile or helicopter to get you back out the same day.
Them there are rules to live by.:D

in reply to: Emergency Gear #20874This topic has took off since I last looked at it. Dave I very much enjoy your thought provoking philosophical musing. And you did illuminate the major reason most get concerned when stuck out on an unplanned overnight outing. “FAMILY” I have taught the “What If” section of the Bowhunter Ed classes where we talk about what to carry with you encase of emergency. My first question to the class is, What do you call sleeping outside in the woods? The answer is usually “Camping”. Then I ask how many in the class have gone camping. All hands are raised. I then ask why panic if you have to spend the night in the woods if you all have been camping? They then list concerns, rain, snow, cold, family ,lost. And of course lions, tigers, bears oh my. I then try to go over what they have with them that can serve dual purposes. And minimize the amount of stuff they carry. My final advice is to ” Pack your brain not the bag”

in reply to: Spring shoot #15886[quote=Smithhammer]Looks like a blast! I really wish we had a 3D course somewhere nearby. One of these days I hope to have enough land to make a course of my own. But on the other hand, I’ve got more public land than I could walk in a lifetime, so the stumping is pretty much unlimited, so I can’t complain.
Some of my best times have been stumping with friends. They have rules on 3-D courses you know.
