in reply to: broadhead target #28108
I’m hitting them face on and they are just stacked in the box, without any extra crumpling. I have not had a head bend at all. I’ve been shooting Tuffheads with an FOC of about 28% and they handle it quite well. The arrow stays pretty straight and they do penetrate 2 1/2 to about 4 inches, so that seems scrubs off the impact. I wondered how it would work in the beginning, but it’s holding up fine. I also tried a simple bale of newspaper and that was alright, but quickly made a mess of paper bits. The box with the magazines stays clean with a new strip of duct tape added now and then to close a hole. The box is only 13 x 15 x 6, so it’s easy to handle. I’m only shooting this this from about 15 yards or so, so I don’t need it to be too big. I might tape a handle of sorts to the top to help carry it. That would be part of the boxes two year plan… dwc
in reply to: Four new bows for friends… #27196Very nice. I admire you guys who are so good at shaping a piece of wood or metal into a beautiful and useful tool. Very nice. dwc
in reply to: broadhead target #27191Quickly tiring of buying foam blocks for broadheads I stacked magazines and favorite sporting goods catalogs in a medium sized cardboard box. I duct taped it into a tight bundle made a mark on it with a fat marker. The broadheads go in between 2/3 in or a couple of inches, depending on the density of where I hit the box or whether I hit the same spot repeatedly. A couple strips of tape keep the box sealed and fresh after several sessions. I do bring it inside after using, as I’m sure it won’t hold up in the rain. Works well. Does not damage the points. Cheap. The stores even paid the postage for my target. dwc
in reply to: 3D Shoots: The Good & The Bad #24770I’ve only attended a few shoots, but have had really good experiences. The Appalachian Bowmen of Sussex County, NJ puts on a really nice shoot at the Whittingham Wildlife Management Area near Newton, NY. They have a traditional only shoot in the Spring and a mixed shoot coming up on the 17 & 8th of August. I only attended the traditional shoots so far. Excellent course and a really nice crowd. I shot a few times at the West Caln Sportsmen’s Club near Coatesville, PA. Another great crowd and really nice courses. This one is a PA Longbow Association event. The PLA is a great group. They have another shoot on the 16, 17, 18 of August at Delta-Peachbottom in York County, PA. I have not attended that one in privious years, but might try to get down this year.

in reply to: Quality, yet affordable knife suggestions? #21929I have a Buck fixed blade that I used to butcher a deer with last fall when I couldn’t find my better one. I was pleasantly surprised that it held a good edge all the way through. I bought that knife with lawn mower money when I was a kid. dwc
in reply to: A short rant about KE… #21759I know I have a stack of Steve’s favorite catalogs in my homemade broadhead target. They are good for something. dwc
in reply to: Cold Shots #17589I find that I can make some of my best shots while stumping, when I have to try to shoot through a hole in the brush and trees. I really have to concentrate on the path the arrow has to take and then on the spot. I don’t always have that well tuned concentration when shooting the bag out in the open. dwc
in reply to: Dirty Old Hats #17583Some good lids there. Dave, it looks like that broom is the only thing holding up that shed. dwc
in reply to: A short rant about KE… #16513Rant on brother! A good rant is as much of a good thing as a misinformed rant is a bad thing. Keep shoveling the good coal on the fire. dwc
in reply to: Back from ETAR, what a blast! #15803Looks like a great time, Alex. I consider it every year now, but between work and family stuff going on this weekend every year, it tough… maybe next year. Looks like a good time. I’d love to meet some of these folks, especially G. Fred. Thanks for posting the photos. all the best, david
in reply to: Remove inserts from carbon shafts #10894I use that yellowish hot glue and gently, gently, heat a field point screwed in until I can pull it. Works well. dwc
in reply to: Arizona E Z Fletch #64007I third the tape. I never tried the glue since I’m sure I’d have the stuff everywhere but where I want it. Been using tape for three or four years and it works great in all manner of weather, too. dwc
I’m still pretty new at this and from a learner’s standpoint I have to pretty much agree with what Dave said. When your really working on something, I’d say shoot until you’re either tired physically or when your mental concentration begins to slip. Then take a break. That’s hard to do though, because it’s just so much fun. I love to stump. Some days I’ll shoot twenty arrows while stumping and other days only two or three, depending mainly on how I’m feeling about it.
Check out the threads and videos on long range shooting. That’s one of the best things going. enjoy, dwc
