in reply to: Who Hunts Alone Most of the Time? #36567
I’ve hunted both ways but I’ve taken more deer on my own than with a group or even a buddy. I did not really began killing deer until I went solo. After that it was hard to make myself go with the club or with a few buddies. When I was a member of a camp for several years I never felt like totally a part of the camp scene. I know it seems smug and anti-social but I would camp outside the clubhouse in order to get some sleep and be able to hunt refreshed while the others would stay up all night and wind up back in camp by 9:00 with a big head.
I’d just say, hey, don’t hate me ’cause I’ve got one hanging on the meat pole. I came here to hunt. It’s a hunting camp right?
Now days I wish I had finessed that just a little better than I did. Like Dave said, age will make you a little more social. 😀

in reply to: Don Thomas Deer carry method? #31534Yep,I carried my first one out when I was 19 years old. It was a yearling and yes I “blooded” myself lacking a mentor to to administer the sacred rite and advise me better. Dragged or carted all the rest.
Don’s method sort of reminds me of how the bushmen of Africa carry small antelope except they carry the legs over the shoulder like a messenger bag. Probably works fine for small deer.

Hi Duncan aka Snuffornot, you go kill a hog yet, it’s been almost 3 years now.
I have a friend and he days; ” if you don’t go, you won’t go “
Not yet King. And your friend is right, if you don’t go you won’t go.
I know I should not keep putting it off. I have an old High School bud that has them on his ranch in Texas but getting there is the obstacle these days.
I’m finding out more about the hogs right here in NC and some are on public land. So there may be a home state hunt in my future.

3 Rivers. They are the tamarack pattern.

in reply to: Practice makes perfect, Hopefully. #15176Hey Squirrel,
Welcome. If there are no mentors readily available here’s a trick I sometimes use to critique my own form. Have someone video you drawing and releasing an arrow from the side then take a look. You could compare your form to others (vids on youtube)or even post it here and I’m sure one of us would chime in with lots of advice!!:D

in reply to: "The Grey" #15171Yep, I saw the reviews and it seems they have taken a gamble as to how this will be percieved. There is some concern how well it will do at the box office. I have to wonder how many that will be attracted to the Jaws type hype will actually get the deeper aspect that is intended.
I’m not a big movie goer. Have a tough time with crowds if I can’t see an “out” so maybe I’ll catch it on Netflix someday or better yet, read the book and get the real story.
Here is the thread that mentioned the bow bolts
in reply to: Limb Paint #9273Paleoman,
I’ve used a Bear Grizzly since the early 80’s and yes the finish is very shiny. I’ve used various cloth limb covers that can be easily made from camo cloth. I’ve also used camo tape with good results. I feel this protects the original finish and when I’m not hunting with it I can remove them to show off the pretty finish.
I’ve not had a critter spook while using my limb covers.
Currently I’m using a snake skin set from 3 Rivers and I really like the Tamarack version too.
If it were mine I would not paint it or sand it. I’d just cover it.
