in reply to: Outserts for skinny shafts #9710
FOC is important, but if he plans to hunt deer with these arrows, overall weight is more important. Just saying not to sacrifice overall weight in a quest for FOC. Of course, if you can get good overall weight and most of it’s up front, even better. I killed my first whitetail as a teen with a 42# recurve, cedar shafts and 130-grain two-blade (Bears with bleeder blades removed) and got good penetration. I have no idea what arrow weight or FOC were. 😆
in reply to: Favorite meal while out hunting #8967If I’m camping and cooking I hate major preparations and hate even more the clean-up. So my favorites are (a) stuff my wife has made ahead and frozen that I can simply heat in a pan, and (b) Hatch green chili stew from a can. Of course, when a kill is made then fresh backstrap steaks that night are mandatory! Yum …
in reply to: Burgers – Don Thomas Style #8965I’ve enjoyed two wild game meals at Don and Lori’s, and both were five-star quality. Like most great cooks, he loves every aspect of it and views the preparation time, with ample wine, as prime-time for great conversation. While I can’t stomach some of the things they love — sea snails? — he is a true master chef and I look forward to another great meal there someday. They should definitely write a wild game cookbook as I’ve never yet found one that goes beyond the basics. That’s a hint, you Thomases. 😀
in reply to: Favorite Arrow discontinued #8358The lighter the shaft and heavier the head, the higher the FOC and the better penetration. Your total weight is fine; anything above 650.
in reply to: Another Walking Stick #61730The only trouble with your sticks, Steve, is that they are so full of art it’s almost a shame to use them. 😀
in reply to: "The Good Hunt" links #61013Ahh shuck, you guys. :D:D:D
in reply to: Congratulations Dave Petersen! #61011Thanks again, guys. You’re all the cream of the crop and I’m blessed to “know” you. No, no money, story of my life. And I didn’t attend the “presentation” as I was elk hunting. 😀
in reply to: Bleeder Blades #60527Bleeder blades are the best way I know to slice and dice your fingers while field dressing an animal.
in reply to: "The Good Hunt" links #60521Thanks, John. Let me be clear I am not asking anyone to contribute, but simply spreading the word on the project for those who are interested. The producer/director is the guy who has to raise the funds and I’m trying to help, which I admit is very uncomfy for this old man. But if you want to make a real movie these days, independent of any commercial investment and influence — so you can say what you want to say rather than what your sponsors want to say — this is the only alternative. You should know that Christoph has already invested some $30k, every penny he has. I figured if he believes in the project and me sufficiently to do that, least I cn do is help him raise some post-production money so he can hire the best film and sound editors, a quality original soundtrack, etc. Nobody will make a penny from this. If he’s lucky he’ll break even. It all goes into filming and post-production. Now, if I can only get an animal down! It’s not necessary to make our points — this film will be distributed all over Europe as well as the U.S. and aimed primarily at nonhunters — but you know the emotions after a kill and that’s something we would really like to share. I’m working on it. 😀 Dave
in reply to: How's your elk season going, Mr. Petersen? #60498Update: After a week of utter nothingness out there, this morning there were three bulls bugling down low, and two more up high. I know where the nearest one is bedded and can’t wait for the evening hunt. If they’re bugling, I’m having fun! 😀
in reply to: Unit 76 Colorado Elk Hunt #59817Great work, Rick!!! You da man!
in reply to: Corn feeders #57562No slightintended to anyone, but you asked for opinions, so a negative opinion is as valid as a positive opinion (in case our Beloved Webmother is listening). Baiting Is Not Hunting. It is waiting on stand and it is making a shot (set up in our favor). But baiting is not hunting and I for one would love to see it outlawed in every form, everywhere. Just one Hunter’s opinion.
in reply to: Book Recommendation #56191Etter — A title of the book would help us. 😛
in reply to: How's your elk season going, Mr. Petersen? #55386It’s a tough one, Wayne. My eyes are burning now from prolonged lack of sleep. A drought summer has the elk still high compared to “normal” years so I have very few elk around so far. Thomas Downing, who is younger and hunts harder and higher, has seen three superb bulls “on top” with a total of some 40 cows or so. Where they are finding water up there I don’t know but so far they aren’t budging and he can’t get to them due to all the cows. Bugling was normal but early to start, and now has totally stopped. Were it not for a few tracks I’d think I have no elk on “my” mountain. And somehow I let myself in on filming a documentary on trad bowhunting, ethics, conservation and the stuff I try to stand for — a film maker from Belgium came over here to do it so I’m lugging around a 6’5″, 220lb. city boy with 60 pounds of full-on movie camera and tripod — this is no “video” but a real doc film. He has a cold and so far whiskey, benedryl, codeine cough syrup etc. nothing has worked to stem his cough. But he’s a good guy and trying hard and I like his artistic eye and “vision” for the film. My wife made me do it. 🙄 Since it’s impossible to climb 1500 feet in three miles every day to hunt up where the elk are, given his sea-level lungs and baggage, and the bugling has stopped so no chasing ’em around, it’s a waiting/anbush game and time is running out. This is not what you wanted to hear from “Elkheart” likely, but I”m just another hunter and the elk are usually in charge and I have no magic bullet, or arrow, when there are no elk to hunt. But any hunt is a good hunt (unless other hunters on ATVs mess it up), thus the working title, “The Good Hunt.” Feel free to cross your fingers and toes for me, as this is a tough assignment this year even if I were hunting alone. A day or two out with Thomas, ace caller, just he and I, and we could get it done. Now to bed for another 6 hours sleep, if I’m lucky. Thanks for asking. I think. 😆
in reply to: super shrew on ebay #49779I understand and very thoughtful of you. So it’s a Coffey bow, the 31st he built in that model, built Oct. 2004. I’d say the used asking price is equal to or slightly more than it cost new back then. But Shrews hold their value and you are right that given the year-long waiting list lots of folks, including myself in the past, are will to pay top price, even more than new, to get one in their hands right now. But I still don’t trust e-bay buys, at least not for bows. IMHO
