Haha – I know exactly what you mean , we had a LOT of wind here yesterday and today. I probably won’t shoot, as it is difficult when you cant stand up in it – haha. Figured I would stay ” bedded up ” just like the deer —–read a good bowhunting book.

in reply to: Glove vs tab… #137139I mostly prefer a glove and use an American leathers – which I like best so far.
Looking at R2s custom tab design, I was thinking that might be just the ticket for real cold weather work. Ie the adjustable string tightener would allow it to be used ( and stay put ) over a heavier winter glove. What say you Ralph – have you tested it in panhandle winter extremes ?
Anyone have an update on the Graf App trail expedition ?

Interesting article. I wonder if they have an achery organization that helped initiate the legislation? Good for them. Maybe we can get TJ and webmom to travel there and do an article on bowhunting in Russia—

in reply to: lightweight takedown bow #136984Hi Luke
Welcome to the forum , sounds like you are in a unique place and situation for hunting adventures.
I have 2 RD takedowns, both quite short and very light. A shrew Samurai ( Coffey/ java man) and a Centaur archery. I like them both and They would work perfect for your situation.

I forgot that Stephen and his son were hitting the trail this year. Wish them the best of luck and fun times hiking and camping. Looks like they are going to get plenty of “Cold Weather Training ” judging from the weather your getting back there.

Congrats on your winning score. Keep the pressure on !

Only beavers near me are in the Rio Grande. Game and fish traps them periodically, and removes them for placement in more wilder regions of NM. This is due to the home / land owners in the valley complaining. I see their works in the mtns around here, always impressed by the magnitude of it. They are industrious .

Do to the arc of the arrow, if you are using point of the arrow as a sight – You will have to aim low, until your point on distance is reached. ( usually closer with a 3 under shooter, somewhere around 30yds or less – split finger is usually 50-+). If you use your middle finger as the anchor it should lessen this somewhat. These comments are from memory back when I tried 3 under. I shoot instinctive /split finger. Either is fine, just what one likes better. You might try the string walking technique also, if you like to ” point on ” at closer ranges.
Maybe Stephen will comment as I believe he shoots 3 under

in reply to: Longbow Selection #136528Hi JLJanes
I Havn’t had a real longbow since my John Shultz got ” lost” in a move ( wish I still had it), 30 yrs ago. So, can’t comment on current manufactures. I shoot R / D longbows and am very pleased with the ones made for me by Centaur Archery in Montana.

in reply to: First Ever Trad Arrow Build #136480Adam
I think your arrow will be just fine for whitetail hunting. I have made quite a few different arrows over the years ( wood , aluminium, carbon etc ) I shoot the gold tip trad with a couple of my bows and like them. I have not tried using the nylon in the shaft to add weight. I would think adjusting the shaft for tuning might be complicated. I am curious to hear your report on how this turns out. Maybe one of our other members has gone this route and has some insight?
Razor sharp broadheads and a fine tune are the most important aspects of the hunting arrow imho.

in reply to: Questions About Arrows #136371Hi Kristin
Ah yes, the working up to a heavier bow conundrum. Need to strengthen the muscles ( back mostly, although it also takes grip strength) but if you use the heavier bow you lose form. What you are doing will probably work. When you have the strength to handle the heavier bow emphasize polishing your form again. If you have the funds, going up in increments of 5 lbs is better – .
Another method is to shoot the weight of bow you can handle now . Leave the heavier bows alone for awhile – till you build up your strength thru other exercises. If no gym around- pushups and pull ups – grip exercises ” wood cutting ” etc. If you have access to one of the home gyms that use pulleys or stretch “cables” tubes would be helpful. 3Rivers etc have bowfit ( and strengthening videos) and similar tools which allow you to pull against surgical tubing in different weights. I have one – it works well. When you feel that pulling the 32lber is like the 22 used to feel – start shooting it regularly.
I hope this helps, maybe one of the other members will suggest other methods that have worked for them. A lot of it, is just in the doing of it. Continuing the push/ pull –
Scout.
