What jig? ( we posted at the same time lol)A reason why your current arrows don’t line up, could be as you surmised – different jigs / fetching techniques by the manufacturer. You might have to redo the nock to get those feathers to line up on your new jig … if you have to replace one. I use a bitzenberger, and start with the cock feather,  and when I follow the directions it works great. I also have switched to fetching tape and much prefer that method. You can also buy all white feathers and dye ( marker/ notch ) the cock feather….

I am somewhere in the middle on decoration—

My practice arrows ( especially stumping) aren’t embellished much. However I have been known to have pretty fancy ( colorful) hunting arrows. Mostly so I can see and find them. Sometimes decorated for a little more mojo! I usually personally mark ( one way or another) most of my arrows. That way while on the Buffalo Hunt with the tribe, I know which animals taken, belong to me … haha or actually whos arrows are whos if shooting with a group…

Like Steve, I like to shoot by feel rather than look at the arrow (hunting). The carbon arrow nock indexers are very small. You can build them up with a little glue. Not a problem with wood arrows as mentioned.

I have all the books mentioned – they are excellent.

I believe every trad archer should have ( I keep it handy for reference) TJs — The Traditional Bowhunters Handbook.

Hex head is a good small game head ( squirrels , cottontails, grouse). Back in the olden times we took a weighted .38 special case and glued it on the end of one of our wood arrows……

Turkey’s as Richard mentioned — broadheads. There are a number of bheads designed specifically for turkey ( more expensive) designed to keep the arrow in the bird ( supposedly for easier recovery) I have not killed a turkey with any of them so have no field report. Most hunters just use their big game bheads.

            Ditto what Richard said–

Yes you have it right, it can help you practice ranging

Great practice and loads of fun. Need to be careful on being sure of your target and what’s behind it of course. A lot of hunters carry a smallgame/ stumping arrow while hunting big game, to practice a shot now and then on a long day in the field. Stay tuned so to speak.

The Zwickey heads are excellent . I also, have used the Eskimo successfully. Strong, easy to sharpen and reasonably priced. Hard to go wrong there. Not so much what brand but keeping them razor sharp is the ticket- as you know.

                Hi Bob

                Welcome to the forum…

All the aluminum shafts mentioned are applicable. Give em a try.

Let us know what you find works best. I don’t shoot much aluminum these days ( used it almost exclusively in my youth) but it is a good tuff shaft material.

                  Hi Jared

Good to hear from you . Sounds like you have your tackle set up real good, but are looking to tweak it for peak performance.  I am  not a competition shooter so don’t have any pertinent advice on a competition set up. Have you tried the search the forum above? Or maybe webmom has some ideas on past articles?

                    Richard

Sounds like the perfect set up . I shoot my hunting arrows periodically into old target batten/ scraps, to ensure they are flying true . Well done.

Send a couple pics if you can.

Nice canyon to have a range in. Always fun to see game ; even when you can’t take, you can still practice hunting or just revel in the ambiance of the natural world ……

There seems to be a bit more quail around this year in NM than last year, but it still isn’t a lot.

                        Pray for rain.

Haha on friction. But I know you are half joking. It doesn’t take much to start a fast moving wildfire here in the Southwest.  Hopefully we will get sone rains to keep the danger levels lower. Nice canyon….. any deer there, huntable?

We actually got a couple of evening showers over here in NM. Although it has gone back to hot and dry now. Hopefully we will get our Summer “monsoon” season ( afternoon rains, but that usually doesn’t show up for another month or 2) . I think that goose is lost — needs to head north ….haha.

                                Jared

                                Welcome to the forum–

                                I have not owned a bow with the plunger ( so don’t have a lot of experience with same)  but have shot some. Not sure what bow or type of plunger (on the bow now or just the hole) is involved —Here are a couple thoughts;

You could just disable it,  turn all the way in / tape over / take it off and fill the hole. You could also use it – if low enough in the window to allow shooting off the shelf?

You could trade for a bow that doesn’t have a plunger set up ……if you dislike the feature.

Maybe one of the forum members who is more familiar with plungers will weigh in with some good advice……

Not familiar with them . Do they have a website?

What part of Texas are they in?
