in reply to: Competition vs Hunting Arrows #147011
Hi Jared,
To begin with, I have probably the least experience of anyone here but I have an idea that may help. I think I saw that you have two bows, why not setup one following everything that Jason suggested for competition shooting and save that one that already shoots “very well” for hunting ? Or maybe if you really like them both for hunting and you can afford it, invest in another specifically for competing. Just my two cents.

in reply to: My Broadhead Choice #147009Thanks Again All,
Yeah Man, those Tuskers look just like Zwickeys, All business. You guys have been seeing my nick name, (Bladeswell) so Blades well……I have no problems with sharpening any bladed tools or weapons. In fact, I really enjoy doing it. I get a real sense of satisfaction from getting a razor, shaving sharp edge on whatever I might be working on. Not saying everything needs that type of an edge.

in reply to: Fletching application order #147007Thanks Again Guys,
Okay ,to start with, I bought an MS Jummper jig sold on Amazon. But in after thought, I wish I had bought the Bohning Pro jig for about the same money. The only reason I bought the one I did was because it included a straight clamp as well as a helical clamp. I haven’t actually used it yet, but after unpacking it and fooling with it a bit I think it is well made and will do the job it was made for. It seems though that until every fletch on each arrow is replaced using this jig, I wont have an easy time replacing just one feather. Almost forgot to mention, either clamp can also be adjusted for dead straight or offset quite easily.
I will probably be following Stephen’s example with my arrows being efficient but not necessarily pretty. I want them to be right but without the extra money. And thanks Stephen for clearing up one more thing for me. While shopping around 3Rivers for arrow building supplies, I saw nocks with a big bulge on one side. I didn’t click on them to read about them but I did wonder why they would have that bulge on one side. So now I know. Thanks again everyone.

in reply to: My Broadhead Choice #146927Hi Guys,
So Richard, you were in Rawlings on the one day of the year with no wind ? However did you manage that ? LoL. Yeah, there is probably going to be some amount of wind any day in Wyoming. So stumping will give me lots of real life shooting practice. I also really like the idea of estimating the range, taking the shot, then checking the actual range with the range finder. I’ve used one in the past and probably like the rest of you, I would give it a guess first then check it. Sometimes being very surprised at the difference. I also read about the Zwickey Eskimo being very reliable and popular with the Trad crowd. And I believe it but the CliffZwickey just looks so…well…cool.

in reply to: Small game hunting, Ace Hex Head or The Hammer..? #146920Thanks Guys,
I’ll make sure to use Bheads for turkey. And just for curiosity sake I’ll take a look at the Bheads designed specifically for turkey. Thanks again.

Yep, you’re right. The Zwickey CliffZwickey is the barbed one. I live in Wyoming where there is no mention of barbed arrows in the regs. But just to be safe, I will check with Fish & Game. I like that it is 175 grn. I think the No Mercy is 165. I was able to find field points at 175 but not at 165.

in reply to: Okay….Stump Shooting..? #146912Thanks Richard,
You cleared up another question for me at the same time. Roving. So as I interpret your answer, it seems a good way to practice at an “estimated” range rather than a known range. Do it enough and your range guesstimation should improve. Do I have it right ? Thanks again.

in reply to: Changes at Traditional Bowhunter #146895Hello Robin,
I currently buy from the newstand, (sort of) . I just bought the June/July issue. When is the best timing for subscribing in order to get the next issue as my first one without getting the issue I already have ? Thank you.

in reply to: Am I a Trad shooter…? #146894Thanks for the warm welcome,
I really like the tight groups I shoot with my setup and when I go out hunting this season I’ll be leaving it alone. The last thing I would want is a wounded, suffering animal because of my poor shot placement. I fully understand that there are going to be times when that shot wasn’t perfect or even as good as I had hoped for. But I want to insure that I have done the very best I could on my end.
I’m going to get myself a hair rug and backing plate so that I can start practicing shooting off the rest and also without my site. The site, rest and plunger are easily enough removed and replaced as needed. I will be concentrating on target work only for now but do any hunting with my more modern setup until I’m as good with either setup.
For this year, I’m going to keep my hunting plans to small game and birds. More specifically squirrels and pheasant, I may include turkey if the chance presents itself. For now, I’m doing my practice with my 35# limbs. I was able to shoot 6 arrows from my 45# limbs but was very shaky and I couldn’t hold full draw for long. By the way, I’m 66 years young.
