My experience with a 7.62 rifle zeroed down here at low elevation, high humidity, then taken to a range at about 4500 feet, very low humidity was a negligible difference out to a few hundred metres. My 9mm pistol showed no difference in point of aim at the shorter ranges it was fired (not that I’m a particularly consistent pistol shooter).

It may be more of a factor with arrows (I find Troy’s anecdote about a quality archer noting difference pretty compelling), but if you’re talking about the full effects of elevation on a weapon system I’d be much more concerned about the effects of thinner air on the person moving and powering the bow. In contrast to the negligible effects on my bullets, that same elevation change added about 1 minute (over 10%) to my 2.4km run and drastically extended my recovery time post intense activity. I reckon it was about 2 weeks until I felt properly acclimated.

Drycreek, I’ve been using the Bohning for a few months and it is a simple jig that seems to work well. It’s the only jig I’ve used so can’t offer a comparison. I like the idea of those jigs that can do multiple feathers at once, but I am only producing arrows for myself, so if it takes me a week or two of doing one or two feathers a night to set up some shafts, it’s no big deal.

          Jim.

          PS

Long after the beautiful bitzenburger and the magnets and spring on the bohning have deteriorated into dust, archeologists of the distant future will be digging up someone’s bohning jig and saying “What the f@$% is this?”. All us cheapskates will be part of humanities legacy 😉

                Gday Dave,

Sounds like Steve gave you some good advice there. I have no experience with older bows but I have a 62″ recurve that I draw to 30 inches and it’s fine.

Post pics asap! I love seeing other bows 😀

And welcome to the site. If you ignore idiots like me and listen to the wise old heads that share their knowledge here you’ll learn a heap 😉

Kev, I can’t wait to see the video mate, hopefully the upload is successful 😀

I was stumping a week or two ago and shot what I thought was a piece of trash sticking up out of the dirt. Turned out it was a piece of scrap white good half buried. My 11/32 sitka spruce snapped right behind the 190gn target point 😥 That particular shaft had achieved several hundred successful flights up until that fateful day though. A good life ended with a surprising metallic ‘ping’ 😉

Dave, I’m glad you haven’t gone down the piano wire route! I used to be a pretty active off road rider (2 wheels) and I hate guys that ride irresponsibly. I have a policy that if a chap is somewhere he’s not supposed to be on a bike and he gets close enough to me, I’ll knock him off his bike. I’ve only done it once and it didn’t hurt a bit.

The other thing I do when I hear them around is drag logs at inconvenient angles across trails, just around tight, blind corners. If they are riding too fast they’ll have a spill. I am a bit of a wilderness wierdo though 😉

Etter, I don’t begrudge people who want to use them, particularly for land management. I’ve never walked more than 40km in one day, but you could cover that in less than an hour on a quad. I’ve helped a fella cut a trail through his wooded property and his quad was a really handy tool. Do you guys have a lot of problems with people shredding topsoil with them or something? I know high powered sports quads tear up soil like just about nothing else on the planet 😕

In my mind one of the greatest challenges would be enforcing any usage restrictions. I don’t know what your parks are like, but rangers here are too few to police bikes and quads as it is, when you can hear them all the way across a valley. When they’re silent, fellas will be able to get away with just about anything they want, which is a real worry.

I’m completely at a loss thinking about any solution that would both be likely to gain popular support and actually protect wilderness areas from abuse. I get depressed thinking about it actually.

Mmm, rabbit stew for dinner? Rabbit hunting is some of the best fun you can have with a bow in my little opinion 😀

Looking good Troy. I second Dave on the textured handle, it looks great. Hey are they wooden caps on your limb bolts? They look really cool.

Joe that is a great idea. Perhaps you could start a thread in here asking people for their set ups. I’d love to see the list of great arrows that would be made by members of this site!
