So these two stories aren’t unexpected animals, but animals behaving unexpectedly…
A snake killing and eating a croc in central Queensland:

A western grey kangaroo eating a penguin in Western Australia:

Nature is full of weirdo’s 😉

in reply to: Wolves and Rivers Video #34616I thought this sounded familiar. The audio is taken from a 15 minute TED talk by George Monbiot.
This video is apparently a montage from a variety of wildlife documentary films overlaid onto a clip of Monbiot’s audio.
The TED talk is worth a watch but offers just as much scientific reference as 4 minute film posted here.
Here’s the TED talk:

Here’s the video originator’s website with credits to original films and Monbiot:

Just for y’all’s information 😉

in reply to: What's in your daypack? #34372Nothing heroic like that Dave, my face has just had a rough life. That tooth figured it had had enough and cracked right down the middle on me.
Don’t worry, the Army drilled a hole in me and screwed in a beautiful new tooth once I got home. So I’m basically robocop now. I also have a pile of pig bone in my gum. So I’m also like spider man, only I’m pig man. Unfortunately my only super powers seem to be poor table manners and excessive gas 😕
in reply to: EFOC arrow setup #34357Rich, I’ve had a play with some lighter shafts like gold tip trads and easton equivalents. With a really heavy head and one piece adaptor/insert you might be looking around the 400grain mark for the head. If your shaft is in the 10-11 grain per inch range then you’re likely to land around 700 grains total, but with an FOC around 30% depending how long your shaft is.
You could increase that point weight by having a heavy head on a heavy steel adaptor screwed into a heavy brass insert which could get you up around 800 grains OR you could use a heavier shaft that will increase total weight but reduce your FOC. Nothing comes for free unfortunately and it may require a little experimenting on your part to settle on something you’re happy with.
I don’t feel like I’ve helped that much but maybe laid things out for you a little.
Good luck 😀

Dave, no word of a lie (or spin) I just finished reading the replies to this post, including yours, and the post man beeped his horn out the front and he delivered this:
So if you’ll excuse me, I have some sufficiently good reading to do 😉

I thought that was what the leatherman was for 😉
in reply to: Putting a Patina on knives #31301So in an attempt to answer my own question I gave it a go to an old bent Aztec I had laying about. Apologies for burred edges, I just gave it a couple of passes on a file to bring back the shine.
This was my second attempt and I have a couple of lessons learned 😉
My first attempt I left it for 2 hours and I guess it overworked it as it had a matt black finish just like from the factory. But it is hot and humid here, which may have impacted on it. My second attempt (pictured) I had left it for 1 hour.
The second lesson was let it air dry after you unwrap it. The other side of that head is matt because I grabbed a dry paper towel and wiped it, which just cleaned it up. Still, pretty cool for 60 seconds work and a table spoon of vinegar eh?
in reply to: Chain saw in a can #31015Dave, the beatniks are safe from me 😉
I hear what all you fella’s are saying about the ol folding saw.
I suppose something that looked good about this is you’re on the right axis for working on the trunks of saplings and small trees, where a hand saw can be fairly awkward cutting something vertical.
I mostly use my big knife for cutting cam anyway, but was curious if anyone had used one.
in reply to: How to add point weight on arrow with outserts? #30977Dave may be right Alex. I have some micro shafts with external Al footings, but they’re only worth about 25 grains. If you have an adaptor in your arrow that may be a cheaper change than the broadhead.
in reply to: Beginning Arrow Construction #30968I second getting a copy of Conrad’s book. It’s a very handy reference. Mine doesn’t even live on my bookshelf, it lives on my workbench! It’s covered in stains from when I made my first dozen woodies as I was constantly forgetting things and double checking stuff.
I have one of the cheap Bohner fletching jigs which is fine. The one charm of the single is that all my fletching gear lives in one neat little tool box that I keep packed away as bench space is at a premium for me. But if I had more work space, I’d love a jojan that does 6 at once.
Regarding taper tools, my first was a cheap ‘trad only’ from 3 rivers and it was just terrible. I went to my local archery shop and he had some pencil sharpener ones from Martin that were leagues better. I had a look online and couldn’t actually find the Martin one, but KustomKing has one from bearpaw that looks exactly the same.
Hopefully R2 and some others will chip in, guys that have built a lot of woodies and have a lot of insights.

in reply to: poll on release #30147I shoot split, but I think the dominance of 3 under in field archery ought to be a clue as to which is easier to aim with 😉

in reply to: gap shooting #30015I don’t know about books or DVDs but if you search youtube for ‘jimmy blackmon’ you’ll find a bunch of really good instructional videos he’s posted there. He’s a cracking shot and I found his videos pretty darned good.

in reply to: Side quivers with arrow grippers #28923Thanks for the replies and thoughts guys. I contacted the folks at shrewbows today to order one of their moosehide versions.
Ralph I like your idea with the ‘biner. I reckon I’ve got a few spare fastex clips like the one on my cammo quiver strap that I could add to the GFA for the same purpose. Equally untrad as your ‘biner but I won’t be so embarrased by it that I try to hide it under cammo tape 😉

Ralph, every military surplus store I’ve ever been to has a version of them.
This one here for 10 bucks is exactly the same as mine:
