      Ben,

A tragic story beautifully told my friend. If a possession should ever be treasured, it’s a thing like that.

I just got to the back of the mag now. I thought Jason’s campfire philosopher piece shone a light on something we may not all be aware of, or perhaps don’t feel like it pertains to us as individuals. Everyone of us is an ambassador for hunting and for hunters. It’s up to us to make sure we are good ambassadors.

He made a great point about how being legally justified isn’t the same as doing the right thing, especially in regards to how our actions might be perceived by non-hunters. And how a little effort in that regard can go a long way.

Something for all of us to keep in mind eh?

            Dave, sounds beautiful there.

Bruce, that stove looks a touch heavier and less packable than the kidney stoves we discussed :D

I got out for another early paddle today, caught the sunrise while on the water…

I set out thinking more about mangrove pigs than fish, so pulled the boat up and hid it in the trees so I could go for a wander. I often think of all the kinds of things I should take when I’m exploring, first aid kits, good knife, bug spray etc. Of course, once I got there I thought bugger it, I’ll just take my binos, a brew and my little waterproof camera..

This is the kind of break, or rise, between the mangroves that’s giving me the best view of what the piggies are up to… in this approx 200m x 50m rectangle of grass was abundant ground sign that the mangroves obviously do a pretty good job of hiding. You can see some pig tracks in the bottom left of shot heading away from where I’m standing. In this single small break I found 3 distinct and well used pig crossings. Seems promising 😉

And these little doggy tracks get me excited. I’ve never hunted a predator. But there was a lot of sign just behind the beach line in the trees, with occasional forays out into the open, maybe to investigate something interesting that washed up.

              Brennan,

You know what they say, mediocre minds think alike 😉 I am thinking the exact same thing 😀

              Bruce,

I have thought the same thing to avoid shipping costs. We had been loosely planning 2015 but it looks like a full year for me at work. Dang it all.

                B,

this is the second hand bow I’m looking at (but when I said ‘here’ I meant in Australia, not on Tradbow), it’s RH, fella’s asking 300 to my door. They’re over 500 brand new here, but only 380 in the US 😕 I’m sure I’ve seen them second hand in the US for around 200. 3rivers staff tell me it’s not an oversize item for post, so that should represent some savings in shipping.

And if ever you’ve wondered what wool limb protectors look like, this is it 😆 The fella selling it reckons the original owner had a wool fetish 😉

                  Dave,

I’m sorry to hear that this has become disappointing so close to completion. We all are hoping for an honest look at an honest hunter. Is there scope for those of us who have contributed to pest Chris about this or should we leave it to you do you think?

Archer and Sinawalli, I checked out both those bowyers, they look pretty awesome.

I’ve found one guy with a second hand mag 48 here willing to sell, but at 45#. I think I’ll get it to see if that bow fits me. If it does, I’ll resell it and order a new one a little heavier.

Bruce, there’s no reason not to give them a go in the US, they’re so cheap second hand. To get a new one here is going to cost around 500-600 bucks 😕

I don’t have PTSD, but I did have some the normal spectrum of stress related issues when I got back from Afghan. I found my return to archery to be a helpful tool in kind of ‘zenning out’ and focusing. I’d leave all my worries aside while I was on the range, just going through the shooting process.

Maybe if you can break down your shot sequence into steps or catch words, like “Grip” (how you’re holding the bow), “Bow arm” (check your bow arm shoulder and elbow position) “Hook” (how your fingers are on the string), “Anchor” (Complete your draw), “Follow through” (complete your follow through). There are a number of ways you could do that, but I found having a step by step process helped me focus on form and forget about everything else. Shooting at the range became a very mentally relaxing experience for me.

As far as the handle goes, the fellas may be right, you might just have to make it smaller. I use a real high wrist when I shoot my recurve and it’s really just the webbing between my thumb and forefinger that contacts the riser. Maybe that kind of grip would help you if the handle is too fat to consistently contact the riser with a medium grip. I’d try a few things before I bought a new bow though, you never know what may work.

There are a few other vets kicking around the forum mate, you’re in good company here 😉

Everything I’ve read about them makes them sound like a fun hunt. The closest we’ve got are bunnies and they’re plenty of fun 😀

                          Good luck mate!

                            Ralph,

I recently discovered there is a healthy peafowl population round here. Those guys are an introduced pest and just as fair game as piggies. If I bail up a peacock I’ll send you some full lengths from him and you can tell me how many flu flus you can make 😆

By the way, I’ve never been one for trophies but I reckon that’s because I’ve never shot a deer. I love those antlers!

                              Is this the tab Ralph?

                              http://www.siouxarchery.com.au/store/saunders-fab-tab-3-layer/dp/44

I haven’t tried it but I’d give it a go on your recommendation. Waterproof sounds good! I’ve been shooting almost exclusively with a glove the past year, and have just recently started shooting with a tab again (like I had always done previously) and think I will probably stick with them again. Something about it seems to work better for me.

Mike (and Dave), that was an interesting video. People always gain credibility with me when they are the ones to raise weak points of their own hypothesis, which that chap did.

At the end of the video he talked about a find a long way out that he expected would be dated as very old but hadn’t had the results yet. Do you know what the results of that were?

(Sorry to hijack the thread Bruce… )
