Winston Churchill wrote: (President Roosevelt) sought to entice the nimble and wily fish. I tried for some time myself at other spots. No fish were caught, but he seemed to enjoy it very much, and was in great spirits for the rest of the day. Evidently he had the first quality of an angler, which is not to measure the pleasure by the catch.
Winston Churchill also wrote: The rhinoceros stood in the middle of this plain, about five hundred yards away, in jet-black silhouette; not a twentieth-century animal at all, but an odd, grim straggler from the Stone Age…
in reply to: Custom touches on arrows… #50220Another option might be to use a regular permanent marker then give it a quick coat of spray on polyurethane or something.

I know exactly how you feel Mike. This place draws a great crowd.

My problem is Dave, I’m torn between two great passions. How can a man decide between coffee and whiskey?? They both offer so much to the world…
Bruce,
I the fly screens look like the way to go. I’m used to using a hoochy (you might call it a fly or light weight tarp) which is basically a square sheet you can use as a roof. It’s great for light weight backpacking but I’m looking at light weight family friendly options now and that looks just the ticket.
in reply to: Walsh Obituary #50076He certainly was a character eh?
I don’t think I read any reference in the article to that impressive longbowman trophy though… any idea what it is? I’d like to know more about it.

in reply to: Is your traditional bow "Cute"? #50066I feel your annoyance Dave 👿
If it can be any consolation, a young man at work has been asking me about hunting and bows (a friend of his shoots compounds). His initial interest was compounds but I’ve drawn him to the world of the recurves. It was awesome seeing him fall in love, watching those arrows fly off to the target 😀
For interests sake a couple of things that he said ‘blew his mind’ was how simple the take down recurve was to put together/string etc. And also how quiet it was. His compound shooting friend had told him recurves are very noisy affairs (maybe he’d only been exposed to gap walkers at comp shoots or something).
Anyway, we can notch him up to the good guys yet, I told him he should still go to the local archery shop and have a go with a compound, he may enjoy it more. But I doubt it 😉

in reply to: TAPERED SHAFTS…historically speaking #49472Dr. Ed Ashby wrote: The only arrows of this type I’ve seen were also significantly longer that the usual Native American arrows, with the cane section being almost as long as a ‘normal’ arrow and the fore shaft extending for several more inches. – Ed
Hey Ed, I was just pondering how I might go about making an arrow like that and something that immediately struck me was that I’d want to move that joint as far away from centre of balance as possible, as I assume that would be the point of maximum stress during flight.
Do you suppose that could be a cause of the extra length? Or do you reckon it’s more likely they’ve just added that foreshaft to a regular cane shaft for simplicity of manufacturing process?

I’m actually super impressed. What’s that tipi like in hot weather? Can you partially roll up a side or something for more airflow?
in reply to: When "friends" turn out to be enemies #48294So I got a little bit into the American Progress report. Some of the facts presented were not presented quite fairly. For instance the bottom of page 3 has this:
The contributions are so significant that oil and gas companies now represent as much as 28.5 percent of the NRA’s corporate giving program.
But if you follow the reference to that figure you’ll find their referenced data shows those contributions to be between 2.5% and 28.5% (with no way of knowing what in that range is more likely to be true). They mentioned the big number and ignored the small.
The key is this kind of line from the NRA:
The NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, makes clear that, according to the group’s website: “It is involved in any issue that directly or indirectly affects firearms ownership and use. These involve such topics as hunting and access to hunting lands, wilderness and wildlife conservation.”
You can bet that means roads and reduction of ecological protection. Roads equals easy access, easy access equals more people buying guns to take advantage of easy access. The removal of ecological protections obviously advantages both industries. Put more roads and less protections together and you can’t help but see two natural industry allies.
I’m wildly jealous of some American freedoms, weapons included. But as an outsider looking in, I am not jealous of an organisation like the NRA.

in reply to: Short recurves…suggestions? #45006Bruce,
your BYOV line actually had me laughing so hard I had to explain the ruckus to my wife. Being an American herself she was not surprised at your vegemite policy 😉
PS
If you’re interested in the super mag Jeff Kavanagh’s youtube review is of interest, if only because he has quite a long draw and seems pleased with it…
in reply to: Short recurves…suggestions? #45001Daniel,
The Ambush must be good, I checked out the bowyers site and he said he’s so flat out with orders he’s not taking any new ones for a while!
