Wow !1 Great pig Etter ! Looks like you had a good time too.

To be honest, I didn’t know you guys had bears down there.

I’ve killed a few up here in Ontario though !

A couple years ago I was sitting in a tree stand, bear hunting. Behind me was a small river and my bait station was in a bowl shaped bottom next to the river. It was almost dark and I was just about to grab my stuff and get down when I heard something splashing in the water behind me. I turned to see a large sow with a cub swimming across to me.I didn’t want to spook her so I decided to sit and wait for them to leave. This would be a bad decision. As I watched them come past my tree to my left, I felt something “bump” my ladder. It was another cub on the first rung of the ladder looking up at me. Apperently she had 2 !! So now, its dark out and I only have a bow and an led flashlight. As I watched the cubs pulling at the logs on my bait, they suddenly both raise there heads and look to the right. “POOF” they tore out of there and disappeared. Of to the right, in the darkness, I saw a large black shape moving through the bush in my direction. NOT COOL !! So I decide to get up and make as much noise as I can and slowly move toward the exit so to speak. Let me tell you, it is more than a little unnerving to walk through the Canadian bush in the dark, with no gun or decent light knowing full well that there are four bears around you somewhere.

So, to get out of this bowl I have to climb this side hill road way. The problem was that half way up, a bear was up a tree and huffing and blowing at me ! In the dark…. with no gun or decent light !! Now I’m looking around wondering where the sow with cubs went. Not that I could see anything.I finally broke and called my buddy to drive in to where I was and help me out of there.

I’ll NEVER go bear hunting without a good light and a gun for back-up ever again !!

Awsome !! Reading this has me reliving a similar encounter. This summer I was squirreling and spotted a doe and fawn bedded about 80 yards away. It was a bit breezy but the direction was pretty good for a stalk so I decided to see how close I could get. Well, I got to 18 yards, only moving when the breeze made noise enough for me to crawl.I pulled my legs under me and slowly came to full draw from my knees.Just as I anchored, I felt the air shift and hit the back of my ears. She stood up and bolted taking her fawn with her.

Of course, I had no intention of shooting buyt it was very cool to know I could have made it happen

I do Etter1’s breakfast almost every Sunday. Love it !! But my absolute FAVORITE is liver. Not just any liver, but fresh bear liver soaked for about 2 hours in milk (while skinning of course)and then fried with butter and onions and lots of mushrooms !! If you like liver….you’ll never have better than fresh bear liver !!

I’d also agree with David Peterson, it makes you a little leery of dressing your animal when you pick up your arrow and see the blades missing.

First let me say that I was a compound hunter up to a year ago so my experience with trad bows and penetration is limited.

Having said that, I’ve taken a dozen or so deer and a few black bears with Fred Bear’s Razor Heads. Some with and some without the bleeders. Every arrow has gone at least to the fletch and with the bear I just killed with a 47 pound recurve, the arrow blew right through and hit the barrel on the other side. They also all died within 100 yds so I guess I’d have to say There is very little or no difference using them. I came to this conclusion a few years ago and have not used the bleeders since.

I’m pretty fortunate to be able to literally walk out my door in any direction and hunt on a few hundred acres. I can’t count the number of times I’ve crossed paths with a couple grouse or a rabbit or something on the way to my tree stand or blind. I ALWAYS have at least one judo in my quiver and 2 or 3 broadhead tipped arrows. I often carry 2 arrows with home made judos just because I have, on a number of occasions, encountered a good number of birds on the way into the woods.

Beer bottle caps make great bird tips.

There’s a better picture on the traditional harvest gallery on here. Had to keep this one under 200 kb.

Okay, now give up a few more details. Bow/arrow specs? How far did that monster run after you stuck him?

Thanks ! The bow is a Martin/Howatt X-200. 47# at my draw length. I shoot a 32 inch carbon shaft with a Bear Razorhead. Total weight around 500 grains. 18 yard shot. It blew right through him like butter and clanged off the barrel. He ran about 60 yards and piled up face down in the leaves. Had me second guessing my shot at first since he hardly made a sound as he took off and never moaned once.

Also forgot to mention, I got the whole thing on video !!

Sorry, but I don’t have an answer for you. Only the same or similar question. I have an older X-200 stamped with Martin archery emblem but on the side is hand painted “By Howatt”.

So I’m a little confused about who actually built this bow.

Very cool first attempt ! Looks great !! Maybe a bit heavy for the lighter bows but still, well done ! Sounds like alot of work !!
