in reply to: How well do you shoot #40614
In all honesty, we could sit here for decades debating the best way to practice our shooting. The truth of the matter is, each person has their own way of practicing, and if it works for them, and they can make their shots count in the field, that’s all that matters. Practice away, gentlemen, and good luck in the field.

in reply to: NEW — Woodsman ELITE broadheads #40178What kind of pricing are they offering on the new Woodsman? If it’s close to the old price, I very well may consider them. Also, is the screw-in part machined into the head, or is it glued on like the original woodsman head?? Thanks.

in reply to: Growing Antlers? #26574I don’t know much about food plots or any of that stuff, but I’m not sure that I agree with planting just to grow horns. It just kinda rubs me the wrong way. Kinda like baiting for bears. It’s kinda like putting the honey jar out there and waiting until a particular animal shows up. Sure, it may take a while for the right one to come around, but eventually they will. It’s basically a sure-fire way to get a “trophy” animal. Sure, I’d love to shoot the biggest buck in the woods. But I’m not gonna tote a salt block or mineral block out into the woods and sit on it. Nor am I going to plant special “goodie” foods for the deer to come to me. I want a level playing field. Sure they have better hearing and smell and probably sight than I do. That’s because they are prey. They live their lives with their nerves on edge to escape predators. What I have over them is the intelligence to learn and understand how they get away, and how to put myself in the proper position to intercept them. Or, if I’m hunting with a rifle, I have the ability to reach out several hundred yards and make the kill with a rifle. I don’t feel that baiting of any kind is a fair way to take any animal that could potentially go into the record book, nor should it be used as a method for filling a freezer for that matter. We each have brains. Let’s use them.

in reply to: I never thought it would happen! #26567Montana’s archery season opens the first Saturday of September, and continues for roughly six weeks. One week after archery season closes, our general rifle season opens, and runs for five weeks, ending the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Needless to say, we have a lot of hunting time available to us, regardless of the day of week. Plus, there are various “special seasons” such as backcountry (wilderness) seasons, an early archery season for antelope, and some late season hunts that are mostly permit-only basis. Here in Montana, we are very fortunate to have such liberal and lengthy seasons.

in reply to: glove or tab? #25460My two biggest reasons for shooting 3 fingers under are these:
1) It feels funky to have one finger over top of the nock.
2) 3 fingers under puts the arrow closer to my line of sight before the shot, which I believe helps with accuracy. The closer you can get to a straight line, the less your body compensates and the more accurate you will be.These are my two biggest things for the style of shooting I chose when I started. If you go with 3 fingers under, keep this in mind…my nock point is set at 5/8″…higher than most split finger nock points. But that could have to do with the arrows I shoot, as well. Good luck.

I shoot 60#@29 1/2″ out of a Bear Grizzly. It is marked as 55#@28″. I shoot Gamegetter 2117’s with 145 grain field tips and 150 grain Wensels, and get a very nice straight flight out of them cut at, if memory serves me correctly, 31 1/2″. I can shoot 2018’s with a 125 grain tip (broadhead or field tip), but I don’t remember the cut length offhand. Either way, I’m partial to aluminum arrows as I don’t have the patience required to continually straighten them and I’m too financially maxed out to consider carbon arrows.

in reply to: glove or tab? #25235texasota,
my personal preference is a good glove. i’ve tried tabs a couple times, and just didn’t like’em. I shoot three fingers under, instead of split finger, so that makes a bit of difference. most tabs, at least the ones i tried, were designed to shoot split fingers. gloves allow you to keep your fingers tight together.

in reply to: one-bow guy #24176I shoot a 55#@28″ Grizzly that I draw to 29 1/2″ and 60#. Yeah, it’s a little short for me, but I shoot it pretty well. My uncle has a custom Shafer Silvertip take-down that is about 64# at 27 1/2″. I’m sure that I draw his bow pretty close to 70# at my length. However, after I put some arrows through it to adjust myself to the faster flight, I can generally dial myself in and shoot it almost as well as he can, and that’s pretty much the only bow he shoots, unless he decides to shoot my aunt’s 35# Silvertip Longbow for one reason or another. I don’t seem to have a lot of problem switching from bow to bow to bow, and I know a couple other guys that are the same way. But, there is definitely something nice about coming back to the bow you’re most familiar with.

in reply to: Elephant with a bow #23247paza…as a “real traditional bow hunter”, i have no inclination to travel to other continents to pursue other game animals. i’m perfectly happy hunting right here in montana. for those hunters, such as bvalette, who do have that inclination, i wish them the best of luck in their endeavors. for myself, my holy grail so to speak, whether with a rifle in hand, or my bow, is mule deer bucks here in northwest montana. i don’t appreciate you insinuating that those of us that don’t have the inclination to travel to hunt are not “real traditional bow hunters”. thank you.
Michael
p.s. bvalette, i’m not trying to hijack your topic, just felt that that needed to be said.
