in reply to: Woody Weights #22733

Tucson; I’ve tried WW’s in the past, see my previous post, last spring i believe, and i can’t recommend them either. While i didn’t get the breakage problems mentioned, i used lodgepole pine shafts, i did have serious flight and spine issues. All over the map, so i went back to my normal setup. All’s well now.

in reply to: EFOC with Wood? #22723

Ok Mark, i’ve been down this creek before, so here goes.
EFOC with wood, probably not. My experiments with woody weights and pine shafts trying EXTREME foc didn’t work at all, blew spine weights out of the water.
Going to a heavier wood such as ash of douglas fir is a great idea.
Bare shaft tuning would be a good idea, even though i don’t bother with it.
Going up in spine has to do with the heavier broadhead, yes, not because of a different wood type. I’d go 10#s heavier on spine to offset the 200gr heads. NOTE: recurves are much more forgiving of spine than longbows. Now, you can take it from there. Buzzard

I usually use just steel blunts for squirrels and old broadheads, bobbed off, for rabbits and such. My friend came up with a unique idea. He tapered the shaft, then screwed on a 5/16s nut. The nut weighed about 115grs,IIRC. I’ve seen him shoot a couple of squirrels with them. Man, what a hammer they are!

I wouldn’t buy a cup of coffee from 3rivers. But the tomahawk bow is as good, but no better than most other custom longbows out there. And yes, Bill is correct, shoot as many bows as possible to find what you want.

I’ll offer a couple more. Guys i’ve met that had that little something that made them stand out in my mind. Jay Massey and Vern Struble. I met Jay at the GLLI back in the 90’s sometime. We shook hands and talked for awhile. It was like i was talkin to my brother. The most genuine person i ever met. I ran into Vern in South Dakota in a little cafe. He was on a deer hunt and i was chasing pheasants. We had supper together and talked for hours. A true gentleman to be sure!

Since i haven’t seen the article yet, i’ll put it this way. On the rare occasion i find a really good spot, i will only confide it to my wife, son and grandson, and then only if they ask. Period!!! Here in Ohio, with no public land within a 3hr drive, access to additional private land is virtually impossible. You either have a spot or your SOL. The deer on the other hand have the run of the place and the crossgun/arrow-06 junkie on the other side of fence is just as likely to trespass as not. I could probably get rich as a tree stand insurance salesman. A large hunting area here is about 15 acres of wooded land. If it has a creek on it, your hunting in tall cotton.

You’ll find that 4-4″ feathers have more sq ins of surface than 3-5’s. Plus, the 4 inchers would be mounted so that there would be minimal or no contact with the shelf.

Hope you don’t have a crick in your neck from watching your backtrail. With fellows like that in the woods ya just never know. Glad to hear your family had a great time. Longbows and short tracks, the way it aught to be.

While your beaten the dead horse, i’ll start kickin it. 41#, NO WAY!!!!!!! Minimum for a selfbow? 55#s!!! Arrow weight? 550gr.and up!!! Good cut on contact broadhead. Besides being hard to kill, the tracking conditions in those pine forests are horrible. I’ve killed 5 now and there’s all lot of guys here who have many, many more. Coming home without an elk will make you want to go back again. Leaving one dying in a thicket will haunt you forever!!!! Nuff said.

Zwicky started back in the mid thirties and is still today the broadhead against which all others are judged. As with all glue-on heads, make sure you get your arrow taper all the way to the bottom of the ferrule. The Sun never sets on a Zwickey broadhead.

I killed my first chicken when i was 5yrs old. I killed my first cottontail when i was 9yrs old. At 53 yrs now, i’ve been killing my families own food for along time now. Second nature i guess. Growing up on a farm is a life experience all it’s own. I always figured if the critter can run away forever, it has to hunted. If it can’t get away forever, it’s not hunting. Go kill your (clean meat) hog by whatever method you deem humane and enjoy. Your family will appreciate your resourcefulness.

I shot a 63# recurve and a 64# longbow for most of my adult life. However, when i turned 50, i decided to back off a little to prevent possible shoulder trouble down the road. I’m now 53 and am shooting a 57# longbow with good results. Probably stay at that weight for a few years.

An old fellow i used to work with has some and used to hunt with them. Killed several deer with’em and always said there a bitch to sharpen. I’ve seen the arrows he used and only a couple of the heads were not broken where the blade attaches at the rear of the ferrule.

I’m using MA-3’s for almost everything now. Simply put, the most accurate, shoots like a field point, broadhead I’ve every used or seen used.
