All good reasons! But my heart is with Doc Ashby (welcome back and I hope you’re all cured up!) and Snuffy — by doing it right I can realistically imagine what it felt like to be “primal man” who viewed God as a “great spirit” composed of endless small parts … every living thing had/has spirit and worth and demands our respect. Hunting right is the bridge to that primal way of viewing life and death. bb

“Call it paradise, and kiss it goodbye.” (Eagles) I’ve hunted CO and it’s great, but to many of us know that and the hard part is getting away from “us” especially “us” that rides ATVs! Wilderness and roadless, those are the ticket. Plan to walk a lot. Youll love it! bb

Well tru or not, fun! Reminds me of the “gian’t alligater” pics from half a dozen diffrent states! However, I do know that lions figure out where thre’s deer bait, salt or whatever, and learn to hunt there as the batiers do. Lions gotta eat more than we do, and kill with their claws and teeth (no discussion of “what’s tradition” among them!). Damn photoshop should never have been invented. My 82 cese worth. bb

in reply to: Rain Gear #18455

Bowhunting in the rain sure stinks! If it’s raining when the alarm goes off before daylite, I go back to sleep! Not just the uncomfort but the game seems to stay in bed to! If I have to hunt in serious rain I like a comfy serious gord-tex sute that don’t make so much noise. If it mite rain and I don’t want to dye of hippotherma, I relly like Peter Storm’s lightest sute — from England, cheap and will roll up with a top in on pocket and bottom in the udder, other other! But don’t breath so no good for hot walking. How they do it in AK and Pac. NW where it always rains? We trying to have fun, after all. My 48 pens. bb

Prewar70 — Welcome, and first we’d like to know what’s behind that inturesting handle! I agree with greatree etc./ (who needs a shorter handle, please, like maybe “treeboy”? :D) — you don’t need or even want to start with a BW! I had one onct and it was great, fast and gorgus, but not so great as to pay twice what you can get less fancy but just as good bows for. My 25 sents! Shrew, another top-end bow, starts at $650 last I looked. Great Northern, Elkhorn and a zillion others are right up ther but lots cheaper. Brother, if you have the bucks to buy a BW I’d say travel to the nearest really good trad shop — and tell us where you live likely we have someone who can put you on that scent — and shoot a bunch of ’em. I don’t know that model you said, but BW or otherwise, I can say that coming from training wheels, a recurve may be a best transitional. But a modern “reflex deflux” longbow, even if it aint so long, is the way to go. Anyhow exuse my rude ways to try and hepl and so happy always to see a bowhunter grow! work at it good and a year from now you’ll be giving us advise and we’ll be listning! bb

Steve Sr. — fair to guess there’s a Steve Jr. also? 😉 Well, you said in reply to Snuffy:
“Some won’t shoot that heavy (for any reason, due to the more pronounced trajectory) of an arrow yet STILL can benefit from increased FOC and / or a high MA head of single bevel manufacture. Individually testing these myself just adds to my own understanding of the physics of penetration as well as allows me to pass on the same to others.”

I say “good for ya!” Perhaps the most common objection to, or rejection of, Doc’s prescription for killing penetration no matter what is, like, “Well I only hunt whitetails and pigs so don’t need all that much and like whut a I got.” And probly their rite. But then, what DO we need for smallish (sadly the average in many places) whiteys and pigs in case “stuff happens” that ain’t so good? As you say, I agree most fellers reject heavy arrows more than any other part of the Ashby farmula. So, if you (and as many more of us as can contribute) can experiment with various parts of what the Doc has determined for “really big big game” to find a simlar baseline for smallish deer and pigs with bone and other bad hits … well if we can convince more hunters even to use that much, we have done real good, eh? 😀 More power to you, and my gosh you’re “A Man Made of Venison!” BB

Most everything is fixable. As with a used car, questions is — is it worth the cost compared to a new one? I know there’s at least one guy who does major repairs … but sorry cain’t recall the name right now. Good luck. bb

Steve — Thanks for your explanation of the Grizzlystick tuning process. But golly, I have the same problem as Dave. I reckon we just ain’t got the touch and need it to be idiot proof! (Sorry, Dave :D). SEriously I herd a rumor that ABS will be offering their shafts minus that problem before long. Don’t know if they’re new models or just a difrent mfg. process. Otherwise, super-dooper shafts! bb
