in reply to: Block targets #150365
I’ve got one that I won in a raffle somewhere. Not sure of the brand. It works well for warm-up shots in deer camp with field points. I would think that broadheads would cut it up pretty quickly.
For shooting in my workshop I have one of the nylon bags full of pillow batting. Not sure of the brand of that one either but it’s stopped about a gazillion arrows & I can pull them with two fingers.
Not to be overlooked (and cheap) is a simple bale of straw tightened with ratcheting cargo straps.
in reply to: what’s a decent longbow in the $300 range. #150259James, Greetings and Salutations from S.E. Arizona.
I’m assuming that you already have an entry level bow and want to upgrade ?? Couple of suggestions;
(1) Spend some time on eBay just to see what’s out there. A used bow could save you serious coin. One may stand out from the crowd and say to you “I’m the one”.
(2) Take the money that you save on a new bow and spend it on a few coaching lessons. Far & away easier to not learn bad habits in the first place than suffer thru trying to un-learn them. (Trust me on this one)
(3) Join an archery club that has some Traditional members. Good people / Good times.
Good luck and let us know how it’s working out.
in reply to: Best quiver for Bear Grizzly #150067Mainbow dude; Greetings from S.E. Arizona.
I don’t have a Grizz but I have set up a Super Kodiak & a Mag 48 with the 8 arrow Bear spring arm quivers. Kind of a ‘retro’ thing & pretty happy with them. ……………. However, I shoot 2213s so the arrows fit tight in the rubber gripper. Smaller diameter carbons might be a problem. One other issue could be noise. I wrapped the limb with Cor-Flex (pet section / Wally World) where the spring arms fit and then some more over the arms to tighten everything up. Then cut some narrow strips to wrap anywhere metal wire crossed metal wire. Used the last narrow strip for a tip protector on the lower limb and good to go.
in reply to: indian bows #149970Didn’t Indian and Bear have a bit of an advertising mano-e-mano thing going with their 48″ bows ????
I’ve got a Bear 48″ Magnum that’s a hoot to shoot but I’m pretty sure that the weight on the bow is mis-marked by about 15#.
in reply to: indian bows #149962This is a w.a.g. on my part, but you might try calling Wilderness Archery in Calif. They’ve found stuff for me before that’s hard to find.

As I remember, they open 11;a.m. left coast time.
Good luck.
in reply to: Draw length ????? #149698Yeah, I’ve told people that I started shooting back in the 20s ……………….. 2016, 2018, & 2020s were the thing. Then the hot ticket was the 2117 & the 2219. Somewhere in that phase Bob Jenson started using the way too light 2213s to hunt deer with. Scandalous but the guy just kept putting deer in the C.B.H. record book until we took notice. This was back when we thought a compound shooting 235 fps (fingers / no sight) was ‘smoking’.
Good times past.
in reply to: Draw length ????? #149670…………… and this seems like such a simple sport; put the pointy end of an arrow toward the target, yank it back & cut it loose. The reality of it appears that just an arrow would take several books of Physics to cover, the bow a pile of Physics books to explain and at least a thick pamphlet of bowstring info. Add a small library on shooting form and it’s a wonder we haven’t all gone mad.
in reply to: Draw length ????? #149659Ok,…. Much Thanx !!!!!
One more quick question that I’ve wondered about; Is the measured draw force the same as the bow is being drawn as it is when the bow is being let down ???? Seems like it should be but then things aren’t always what they seem to be.
in reply to: Ground Hunting #149249Folding dove stool with a backrest. Cut off the bag under the seat and sewed in a decent day-pac with good shoulder straps. Added a hip belt with some pouches and a bow hook. Good still-hunting set-up and if I want to sit a saddle or some such likely looking spot, a few clips with the brush pruners backs me into a bush quite nicely.
in reply to: Old Ben Pearson arrow ?? #148406Made up a couple of the ‘to spec’ Tracers and gotta say ………….. They’re butt ugly. No wonder nobody remembers them; they must not have been around for long. Going to go with the orange cap / yellow fletch / blue crest & blue nocks that Jim Dougherty used.
On a positive note; this whole thing has been an excuse to thumb thru a bunch of old Archery magazines. Articles by Tom Jennings (pre-compound) Dutch Wambold, Milan Elott, Emery Loiselle and Jack Witt are as relevant today as they were back in the day. Don’t know who owns the rights to those old articles but it would be a kick to see some of it brought back into the light of day.
in reply to: My Possibles Bag #148136Nice.
My ‘possibles bag’ started out as a folding dove stool with backrest. (Backrest is worth it’s weight in gold). Tossed the under the seat bag and sewed in a decent day pack, then added a hip belt with a couple of pouches on the right and a bow hook on the left. Carry everything from game handling stuff to my FoxPro game caller, a novel to read, lunch, lights, fluids, repair items and possibly a kitchen sink.
A bit heavy but anything worth doing is worth over-doing.
in reply to: Old Ben Pearson arrow ?? #148135Duh …………… Why didn’t I think of that ??
Got into a page with a ton of catalogs and found the ‘Tracer’ arrow. It wasn’t what I remembered, being mostly black & orange. Now I need to decide whether to go with that or the orange cap / yellow fletch / blue crest that I’ve found a Bow & Arrow cover shot of Jim Dougherty using.
Tough decisions.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #148101Just finished a Bambi Burger that I mixed in Johnsonville Italian Sausage instead of the usual fat.
Mighty fine !!!
May have to try that with a couple of JennyLopes just to see how it turns out.
in reply to: Old Ben Pearson arrow ?? #148073Found an ad Nov. ’71 Archery World for Easton with Jim Dougherty with the arrows I’m interested in but it’s in black & white.
Close but no cigar.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #148066Test Post;
