I NEVER snicker at somebody back behind the bales. Usually just hold up one of my own arrows and holler “While you’re back there, could you keep an eye out for one that looks like one of these ??” If nothing else, it makes the newbies feel less self-conscious about missing.

What is this ‘aim’ of which you speak ???

Seriously,  on the practice range I begin ‘aiming’ before I even take an arrow out of my quiver.  Starts with proper body position…….. feet / stance, knees, hips, & shoulders.  A moment is taken to think on the last shot where improvement was needed and to visualize the next shot sequence.  (Think Vic Leach, old time tournament shooting ace) Aiming starts with concentration on the spot as I do the swing draw thru to anchor.  A sense of muscle tension is arms to lats to back; push & pull thru the release.  The actual aiming is, to me, simple. I’m left eye dominate / right hand shooter. My left eye ‘sees’ the angle of the arrow shaft up and down and my right eye ‘sees’  the  arrow shaft straight to the spot plus the gap. Split Vision stuff to the max.  While it looks like I’m holding at anchor, I’m actually continuing to draw, just much slower.  Prevents the dreaded collapse & peeking. A level or depth of concentration triggers the shot.

Clear as mud, I know but it works for me.

I thought about White Phosphorus. If that’s what it was those guys were even tougher than we thought. I would be really leery of a bit of the stuff ‘splashing’ back onto the shooter upon release.  Not something I would want on my pink & tender skin.  The other reason I wonder about White Phosphorus is if I’m not mistaken, they shoot a hat with a smoke arrow. Seems as if it was the White Phosphorus the hat would have caught on fire.

In one of the scenes, they appear to dip the end of an arrow into a bucket before shooting. Possibly something like liquid Nitrogen ???

Still an awesome video. Now I need to watch it again, just because.

            Thanx Robin !!!

My tribute to Monte Python’s Killer Rabbit.  That’s target #7 on my home range.

I take my archery real serious, but if ya can’t have fun, too …………………

I try to look at compound shooters as future traditional archers ………… but sometimes I have to look really hard.

I think that they ‘hunt’ that way ’cause they don’t know how to hunt any other way.  More than once on a two track or in a sand wash I’ve heard a vehicle coming and simply stepped off to the side in the shade of a tree but still in plain sight and watched them drive on by with no recognition. Kind of annoying when it happens a mile back in a Wilderness Area.

Sorry to hear that you’ve had a problem getting something from eBay.  I’ve had really good luck with them.

Heck ……….. the unit that I hunt just has an endless parade of vehicles slowly driving up & down the dirt roads, usually the wife or girlfriend driving and the ‘hunter’ riding while holding a bow with an arrow nocked.  In the years that I’ve hunted there, I’ve run into exactly one other hunter  in off of the road.

A trip to eBay …..’bitzenburger’….  shows quite a few old & new models new & used at a variety of prices.

If you can find one at a decent price, I would suggest getting a whole set of clamps; left, right & straight.

The only Bitzenburger models I’m aware of are the current, common ones that have the dial adjustments and an older   one             that has a cam type adjustment sticking out the side. Both are excellent fletching jigs.

The only issue that I’ve ever had is when using 11/32nd nocks, they didn’t fit all of the way into the nock indexer.  Removing the indexer and a few minutes with a Dremel tool to open up the hole in the frame solved that problem.

Again, excellent fletching jigs. For some reason I don’t fully understand, I own 5 of the ‘dial’ models and 2 of the ‘cam’ models.  I’ve also collected a variety of the clamps. Right wing, left wing, & straight.

I’ve also made up a few sets of ‘Masters’ ……….. These are short sections of shaft painted white with a pencil line scribed along the shaft using the clamp for a guide.    This way, if I want to go from helical to straight fletch and back again, I have a reference to go by.

                      Gotta love wood arrows !!!!

Glad to know that it’s going to get simple ’cause so far the more I learn the more I realize how much more I have to learn.           Latest project; If ‘point on’ is 55 yards, a cresting line around the shaft about 5 inches back from the point should be a reference for 100 yards ………….. eh ???  (Got that idea from an ad in the Dec. / Jan. 1999 Trad Bow issue.)  Much to do.

Random thoughts on bows;                                                                                                                                                                                    EVERYTHING is a trade-off………………. You want speed, expect noise and hand shock. You want stable, you’re going to sacrifice a bit of speed. Etc. etc. etc. ………..                                                                                                                                                          A bow that I think is awesome may very well be considered so-so by someone else.  AND WE WOULD BOTH BE RIGHT !!!      So ……………… best advice I can give; Find a bowyer who’s style you like and pick a bow with ‘panache’ that meets your wants.                               Then shoot the heck out of it !!!!

Awesome !!!! ………………………… and all’s well in S.E. Arizona.  (Although rain would help).

FWIW;  Some time back a friend of mine had surgery and the Doctors tried to hold him back. (Yeah, right.) Anyway, he got some really large, lightweight rubber bands and a (gasp) release. It didn’t take too long and his form got really good,  houseflies were in serious peril and I’m pretty sure that the cat stayed on the floor.

Had a swarm of bees go by me today on my archery range. Interesting sound that they make. I just stood still and they went on to find whatever they were looking for.

Question;  How did TJ’s shoulder surgery turn out ???  It sounded pretty intense. Get well wishes, Happy rehab-ing and all of that !!!!

Somebody once opined that a measure of greatness was the ability to do something hard and make it look easy.  I submit that we don’t fully realize just how great some of our noted trick shooters were / are until we try to duplicate shots that they do.

I saw a picture of Mr. Hill standing on one foot with his other leg out in front of him, parallel to the ground, bow in the arch of his foot and drawing the arrow to his waist. Cool ………… How hard can that be ??? ……………. Gotta try it.!!!!                                   Really really bad idea. Not only is it hard to do but the hips and lower back were not meant to draw bows and promptly let you know that if you keep it up they’re going to hurt you.

I’m just going to keep on shooting my 60# ……… take a few shots with my 70# and work on getting the 75# to full draw.
