About Luke Johnson

A freelance outdoor writer and life-long resident of the Inland Northwest, Luke credits his passion for the outdoors to his parents. After spending twelve years in the Outdoor industry, Luke started Selkirk North Media with the goal of creating and sharing authentic outdoor experiences, while building solid partnerships within the hunting space. His number one passion involves roaming the wilds with a traditional bow in hand, and seeking methods of the hunt that bring him the most satisfaction. This often leads to an empty freezer, but always a quiver full of stories.

The Bowhiking Chronicles #090111: Opening Day, Bittersweet

Doing my best to get through the work day, I couldn't sit still...couldn't concentrate. Everyone kept asking me if I'd "had too much sugar"..."had too much coffee"... "why are you so hyper?" At first, I really didn't have an answer for them, but as the day drew on and I couldn't sit still [...]

Review: Trad Sling by Western Binds

During the brief interim that I hunted with a compound, my good friend Tim Endsley was selling his version of the bow sling, under his Bad Medicine Archery label. I loved this little sling so much that I asked him to design and produce a counterpart for trad bows. With him being too [...]

Review: De Havilland Jacket by Stone Glacier

Stone Glacier started out as a company who made ultralight backpacks, but has grown exponentially, and now offers high quality hunting apparel as well. I was fortunate enough to score both the De Havilland jacket and pant, shortly after visiting the Stone Glacier booth while attending the Western Hunting Expo, back in March. [...]

The Bowhiking Chronicles #091213: Late Start, Fell Apart

You’ve heard it likely thousands of times throughout your life: “The early bird gets the worm.” I suppose that it’s true; especially with elk hunting. I recall one September, being frustrated that “my mountain” suddenly hosted triple the amount of pickup trucks, and therefor triple the amount of competing bowhunters. Opening day found [...]

Review: Hoffman 6″ Summit Boots

Hoffman Boots is a fourth-generation business located in Kellogg, Idaho. Their mode of operation has always been to offer “high quality, functional products at a fair price.” The Hoffman name had been familiar to me for years, since they produce top notch logging and lineman boots. But they’ve only been offering hunting-specific boots [...]

Review: The Grayling Quiver, from Selway Archery Products

Back around 2005 was when I first took the plunge into bowhunting. Unbeknownst to me, I also became a “traditional archery nerd” at the same time. My father shot a Bear recurve back in his bowhunting days, so of course, I gravitated toward anything adorned with the Bear Archery logo, especially vintage gear. [...]

Bear 50th Anniversary Take-Down

Recently, Bear Archery celebrated the 1970 introduction of Fred Bear’s innovative Take-Down bow. This design truly revolutionized the industry, and is still sought after today. To honor the genesis of this iconic design, Bear released a 50th Anniversary edition earlier this year. With the curse of Covid19 ravaging through every industry and level [...]
