in reply to: Introducing Guerdon#2 #21089
Hullo pewanogo. The grip seen on Guerdon#2 is a slightly modified grip used on Tucker’s Storm Creek model. I requested that it be made a bit more slender and closer to the shelf. But the standard grip itself is very much a recurve style grip.
in reply to: Concerns regarding speed and kinetic energy #20614I totally understand your frustration Cameron. I went four years without taking big game with my bow. And I also understand your worries about your equipment. Due to hand injuries I can only shoot low poundage bows. But last season I put a 550ish grain arrow through a 250ish pound Muley buck’s shoulder blade at thirty yards. My bow only pulled 40 to 43# at my draw, and I doubt it had any more uummphh than the poorest performing bow you mentioned above.
in reply to: Concerns regarding speed and kinetic energy #20550Hullo Cameron. Just wondering if you have taken any big game with any of the bows you mentioned above, especially with your Tomahawk?
I ask because if you have taken game with any of these bows, and taken them without any difficulty, then I wouldn’t worry myself to much over the math. I have seen photos of men like Dale Karch with critters ranging in size from Musk Ox to Water Buffalo, and all taken with the same series of bow (although probably different poundage) that you yourself own. Not to mention the number of Elk, Moose, Grizzly and so on that have been taken with self bows, which I doubt would perform as well as the last two bows you mentioned in your tests.
The math is a nice thing to know, but I wouldn’t get myself worried about it.
in reply to: Gap Method #19073I shoot gap/split vision or however one wishes to label it, and I also found the large gap that Bruce is describing to be a hinderance. So I just upped my arrow wieght which meant I had to lift my arrow tip reference point to compensate for the faster drop. Found the 650ish grain mark out of a 45ish pound bow allowed me to use point on at 30 yards, and just slightly lower for twenty. Of course it probably will vary user for user when draw length and other considerations are taken into effect, but it helped me tremendously.
in reply to: Tanto Point? #18377I put a tanto tip on some Tusker Concorde double bevels once. Only managed to shoot Rabbits with them, but I did notice the tips bent less with the tanto tip filed on.
in reply to: It's getting CLOSE! #18370Well I am not sure about early breeding for Turkey’s, but I have seen two cock Spruce Grouse in full strut within the last month. Don’t ever remember seeing them behaving that way in March but then we have never had a Winter as mild as this one.
in reply to: Critter Stories #17594This Febuary I was packing my gear into our crew truck outside of Red Earth Creek in Northern Alberta. We were parked on the outskirts of town when this yearling Whitetail comes busting out of the brush at full speed, followed immediately by a large Grey Wolf! They crossed the highway no more than 50 yards from me and less than 30 yards from the camp, and then into the woods on the opposite side. I stood there speechless wondering if it had really happened at all.
Also one time I was sitting in a Spring blind for Black Bear when a Chipmunk scampered up my boot and pants and stopped at my knee. We made eye contact and he froze stiff, probably thinking “Game over man, game over!” Eventually he regained enough courage to scurry away. Never shot a Bear that day, but it sure was memorable none the less.
in reply to: Where Would You Live? #17197Australia hands down!!! No -40*C weather, bushels of wildschwein with a year long season, oceans full of game fish (including my personal favorite Queenfish), and the rivers are swarming full of Carp for bowfishing. Add the that the opportunity of hunting Goats, Camels, Donkey, Water Buffalo, Hog Deer, Fallow Deer, Sambar Deer, and others.
And despite their reputation the mossies in Oz are lightwieghts compared to the ones we find in Alberta. Spiders are a bit much though. Any spider that eats birds is a bit to much for me. But thats what blunts are for I guess .
in reply to: It's getting CLOSE! #16733Well no Turkey season for me. But Bear season begins on the first of April. Gonna purchase my two tags and spend about 40 days chasing em this Spring. Just hope the Bears cooperate.
in reply to: How Was Your Winter? #16721Extremely mild winter up here in Northern Alberta as well. Only had one -40*C snap this winter and I have noticed that a great deal of last years fawns/calves survived. Should be a phenomenal hunting season in 2012!
Also the Beavers and Gophers are out and about already! Hope to have some pics before long.
in reply to: With A Heavy, Heavy Heart #48405I am sorry for your loss Dr. Ashby.
in reply to: Who Hunts Alone Most of the Time? #45112Luckily for me my wife took to hunting shortly after I introduced it to her. Now she and I hunt together regularly and I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way, especially when it comes to camp hunts.
in reply to: Don Thomas Deer carry method? #42276Yah I was going to give Don’s method a try last year as well, but all the small Deer outwitted me. If I am lucky enough to bag a small Black Bear in May perhaps…
in reply to: Primitive Spot'n'stalk #10325Wow! Finally a hunting video that I would be proud to show my non-hunting friends. Simply wow!
