in reply to: What draw weight would you recommend? #11577
Fred Bear answered this question so many times, so many years ago I’m suprised people still ask it.
The correct answer is, per Fred”shoot the heaviest bow YOU can handle”.
That’s it, mystery solved!
Go out and shoot some bows and find a weight that works for YOU. Don’t be handicapped w/a bow you’ll be dissatisfied with. Draw weight is only one of many variables to consider
in finding the “right’ bow.
Half the fun is finding “the” one!
Enjoy the hunt!
in reply to: where are the heavier bows at??? #21006There are plenty of us shooting heavier bows. Heavier bows always have the edge as long as you practice w/them and are as proficient as needed for the game you hunt. More power, flatter cast, better penetration w/heavier arrows, all the advantages are yours. There’s no way a 650grn arrow from a 50lb bow will out penetrate the same arrow from a 65+ lb bow.
Remember Fred Bears 3 commandments: “Pick a spot, know when to shoot, and shoot the heaviest bow you can handle”.
Words for a bowhunter to live by.
BTW, I shoot 65 and 73lb bows w/ 2317’s tipped w/ 175 gn tigersharks.
Have you ever seen the pics from King Would Be? He hunts jurassic hogs! You can be he ain’t shooting 45lbs!

in reply to: How Many Over 55 #43486I’m 58 years old and shoot a 65lb Timberhawk recurve.
in reply to: Plaid Shirts #26638Can’t beat an oversize wool plaid shirt, my first close encounter with a deer was at about 6 ft wearing one of my Dad’s old green plaid woolrich shirts, fit me like a poncho!. Damn deer almost ran over me, pulled the string back so hard the arrow fell off the bow. Got me hooked for the rest of my life!

in reply to: my new timberhawk #45413Dave:

in reply to: Flint or Agate #39018Try Log Cabin shooting supplies, mostly muzzleloader, but they used to carry large flint nodules for knapping, bought some myself longtime ago to use w/my flintlock. it was orginally used as ballast on english sailing ships during the revolutionary era.
MIkein reply to: Left Wing, Right Wing,,,no difference #37544I tried this once with my recurve when I ran out of rt wing, the only ones I could get were lefties. shot to same point of impact, just did not seem to spin quite as fast. Never mixed them.
Mikein reply to: Degrees of Rotation of Single Bevel Heads #60571I hate to say this, but maybe we need to borrow a few tricks from the gunners and shoot a s/b head into some balistic gelatin and trace the helix; the path would be obvious in that stuff.
Even better would be to high speed film it penetrating the gel. That would show exactly what we need to see.Mike
in reply to: Homemade alcohol stoves #47301Check out the march/april issue of backwoodsman. There is a great article on making a a mini stove out of an exhaust pipe adapter. The fellow that wrote it is a native Alaskan. very simple, straightforward and reliable, easy to make. I’m gonna try to make one when I get the time. Thing burns solid fuel bars or small pieces of wood.
Check this out. (I know it doesn’t burn alcohol, but fuel bars and sticks are easier to pack in/find in the woods).Mike
in reply to: Martin takedown/San Antonio #42319Shot one a couple of weeks ago, 50#, rt handed, got pretty stacky after about 27-28″, can’t knock’em for the price though.
Alot of folks use for bowfishing, but have a pal that shoots 3d w/his, does ok.
