I’d have to put a “2nd” on the Lettin’ loose-A season with the longbow” video by Doug Schlabach. A good video that is down-to-earth hunting, like you or I would do. Turkeys, whitetails a plenty and elk.

If I picked a 2nd should-have I’d say pick up Masters of the Barebow 3 (about shooting form).

        Kevin-

How is the Hard Rock to work with, ie: straightness retention, tapering, etc. and what is your source and price paid for shafts? I am relatively new to wood shafts and have used some POC’s and Sitka but am curious about other materials. Thanks.

After shooting all 3, aluminum are too easily bent for me, carbon are dead-consistent and extremely durable, but after recently getting into wood shafts, there is something weird when I shoot carbons, I am sure it’s all mental but that is a big part of shooting a bow so has to be taken into consideration as far as I am concerned. For me, it has to do with who deep I’ve gotten into wood arrow construction, I am not producing my own shafts but I am spining, straightening, cutting, tapering, crest-wrapping, nocking and fletching and producing quiet shooting consistent arrows. IMO carbons just don’t have that magic. The one downside to the woods has been durability, 4 deer killed, 4 arrows broken, retired to the “successful arrows” section on the bookshelf.

Good luck with the surgery Dr. Ed. OUCH!

And thanks for the penetration studies and information. You are the guru and we are all students learning from your information. Dang, sure is fun to discuss but I’d much rather test by shooting and find out what works best FOR ME. None of us is exactly the same and wouldn’t that be boring if that was the case??

                in reply to: Glue #8123

I have been fletching with nothing other than the Loctite Super Glue Gel control for a couple years now. If there are draw backs, I haven’t found a single one. With the gel style glue, it’s much easier to get the glue on the quill and it stays put while I make sure I am getting the fletch in the right place on the arrow. I have pulled fletched shafts through 2-3″ thick ethafoam (cheapie) targets multiple times and have almost never had a feather come off or even curl or damage the leading edge of the quill. Sure I could spend big cash on “archery specific” glues but the Loctite works and costs only a few bucks. I say give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

(I have no connection to the producers of this glue….but if they want to offer me a big-money endorsement deal, HECK YEAH I’ll do some commercials for ’em!! I can see it now, me all on the TV, smilin’ man, aw BEAUTIFUL! (Thanks Dr. Hook)

might have lost some sanity but I ain’t askin’ for it back!

Here’s what I am looking at:

Current arrows I am using are Sitka Spruce woods, about 70-74 spine, cut to 29.5″, nock valley to BOP, with 225 gr. Tuffheads. Total arrow weight is in the 620’s. Flight is good. Durability, in their unprotected state has been poor. I mean, I put these hand crafted beauties together, only to have the delicious venison break them off on trees or fall on them. The back of my mind also has the issue of quicker paradox recovery with carbons vs. slower recovery with woods. So that is the reason that I am “fishing in the pond” by starting this whole durned thread. Maximum penetration is really my ultimate goal. More thoughts on this?

Thanks for putting up with me, I do appreciate your patience.

                    Alex,

What inserts do you use with the Brown Bears? And weight of the head is what with the inserts? I have some 400’s and some 500 Bemans and probably some 2018 or 2016’s in the ain’t usin’ ’em no more box that I could cut up. Trying to work on the insert combination with my 225 gr. Tuffheads.

Thanks for the info ‘n Happy New Year.

She’s a beaut Mr. Dave! After all the good you do for others, doesn’t hurt to reward yourself!

She’s 54″? I haven’t shot a longbow that short, do you notice a difference compared to longer longbows?

                      Congrats!

My broadhead target of choice is one of those cheap Ethafoam jobs, about 3″ thick so broadhead penetration is always complete and allows unscrewing of the head (when shooting carbons o’ course). The issue will be with non-broadheads as the ferrule will be of significantly larger diameter and I go cheap on non-broadhead targets by filing a large heavy duty plastic bag with plastic sheeting scrap from work. The diameter difference becomes a problem because the sheeting tends to wrap around the shaft. Blunts work fine, as do heavy field points but getting them out can be a problem. The serving job on the shaft looks impressive. Gonna have to figure this one out. Any more suggestions peoples?

Seriously though, breakidown fer us, Mr. Troy, won’t ya please???

I have some big honkin Sorells that STILL don’t keep my feet warm enough. My best solution to date has been boots a size or two bigger than my normal shoe-size, two pairs of wool socks with handwarmers (not toe warmers) in between on top of my toes and I just recently picked up some heat packs that are 3/4 insoles that I am wearing with the wool socks in 400gr Thinsulate boots. I am in Mini-Soda and the last 3-4 weeks have been 25 degrees or less…uh, mostly LESS and I have been up in the trees ALOT. I have shortened my pre-prime time to minimize total amount of time in the woods and exposure to the cold. Never have tried them ‘lectric socks though. I do spend a whole lotta money on handwarmers, bodywarmers but it has been the best option. I also layer up with polypro and wool under my camo. Anything to keep the bulk down and the warmth in. Good luck!

“Mississippi?? ‘n you think it’s cold?? Come on up! I’ll show you what cold is!!!

                            Cheers and good luck!!

Thank you to all! As I have said before, it is through the efforts of the TradBow community that I have learned so much about trad archery, proper form, proper arrow selection, wood arrows, penetration producing, etc. which have produced these results for me. And I am so proud of the accomplishments that I have made this first season of nothing but trad. bowhunting.

And to Joe Furlong for producing a broadhead that has proven to me what it can do to result in superior penetration on these deer I have taken to date with my longbow. I cannot express adequately in words how I feel about this journey I have undertaken and the gratitude I feel for anyone who has had a hand in guiding me on this path I have chosen. To drop a few names, Dan and Jared Toelke for MTB my Whip longbow and great bowstrings and a great shooting tab, Joe F. for the broadhead, Neil Hildebrand for beautiful sitka Spruce shafts, Arne Moe for shooting form guidance and my intensive introduction to wood arrows, and all who have put into words and actions the stimulus for me to think that I could take deer and turkeys with a longbow. And to my wife who has been nothing but supportive to my longbow shooting and hunting addiction. Last but not least, I need to thank the first human, thousands of years ago that figured out that he could feed his family with a stick and string and sharpened projectile. I am gushing a bit, but I am sure you all know how I feel. The fire has been lit and burns deep within me. I have 5 trad kills to date and won’t stop hunting this year until the season ends on Dec. 31.

Did I mention who much I LOVE BOWHUNTING? Coulda sworn I did?!

My tradition is, when I shoot a deer, that evening’s dinner consists of fresh tenderloins and this deer was no different. And they were DE-Licious as usual. I mean, fresh t-loins cooked in butter and garlic just till a bit pink in the middle. The best meal I ever eat and this year so far it’s three such meals, the fourth is in the freezer as two deer in two days just took too much out of me to think about preparing dinner and I still had a bit of left over T-loin from the night before and some chicken fried deer steaks from the night before that. I am going after number 5 deer on Monday!

AGain, Can’t believe the unbelievable penetration with the Tuffhead!

Soon I will have a picture to show you guys concerning the 225 gr. Tuffhead and it’s penetrating abilities from my wood arrows shot from my 53# longbow. Stay tuned, I think you will find it very interesting.

Suffice to say, I can’t imagine being more satisfied with a different broadhead compared to what I am seeing with the Tuffhead.
